Jamie Foxx slammed for 'gibberish' sign language on The Tonight Show

Show comments

American actor and singer Jamie Foxx has been slammed for signing in "gibberish" during a promotion for the most recent episode of The Tonight Show.

While the show's host, Jimmy Fallon, launched into a 'what's coming up' segment, Foxx provided a spontaneous – and completely false – translation.

Jimmy Fallon's hair-tousle defence

Facing flagging ratings and social media criticism, Jimmy Fallon defends his Donald Trump hair-tousle.

However, the gag fell flat among viewers who are deaf or hard of hearing.

Model and Dancing with the Stars contestant Nyle DiMarco took to social media to argue that this sort of gag isn't appropriate in 2017.

"It is straight up disrespectful to make up sign language," he wrote.

The following day, DiMarco released a longer statement explaining why fake sign language "should not be tolerated anywhere".

"We simply do not make fun at the expense of other cultures, especially those with a history of being marginalised," he said. "When we do this, progress takes a step backward."

The reality TV star pointed out that while sign language is the "bedrock of Deaf culture", just two per cent of deaf people have access to quality sign language education.

"What Foxx did on Fallon Tonight [sic] made our struggle that much harder," he said.

Foxx has yet to publicly address the criticism.

However, Fallon's network – NBC – has reportedly reached out to DiMarco and aired the promo "sparingly".
