Dr Ted Gott, Senior Curator of International Art at the National Gallery of Victoria, discusses the unique style and groundbreaking brush strokes of the visionary artist ahead of the NGV's upcoming exhibition.

The show focuses on prosaic scenes such as autumnal landscapes and workers toiling in fields rather than the depictions of sunflowers and starry night skies for which the Dutch painter is best known.

"It's no surprise that this exhibition has proved a winner, but to hit this milestone so quickly is incredible," Creative Industries Minister Martin Foley said on Thursday morning at NGV International.

"We are absolutely thrilled with the amount of people that have seen Van Gogh and the Seasons so far," said NGV director Tony Ellwood.

The gallery attracted more than 2.6 million visitors in 2016, according to figures supplied to Britain's The Art Newspaper, which ranked the NGV 19th in its annual list of the world's most visited museums.

A big contributor to that total was the almost 400,000 people who visited the gallery's Andy Warhol|Ai Weiwei exhibition.

The NGV's other major winter masterpieces drawcards have included The Impressionists (380,000 in 2004) and Monet's Garden (around 342,000 in 2013).

Van Gogh and the Seasons is at NGV International until July 9.
