Bingo Gazingo's trademark songs most closely resemble free-verse beat poetry, delivered in a mesmerizing chant, sometimes screamed, sometimes shouted or growled. But don't call it poetry. Bingo insists almost angrily that what he writes are songs, despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary, he sings them. At Pseudo Programs, Bingo performed five of these songs live, and premiered the video Oh Madonna, created at Pseudo under the aegis of Pseudo Founter Josh Harris and Producer Galinksy.

Plot: After gangster Mulligan's cars colony, fleeing northern justice, finds a hiding place in Alabama, spoiled, naive daughter Grace refuses to travel on after seeing the Manderlay cotton plantation being run under slavery rules, called Mam's law, inclusive flogging. She keeps half of dad's goons as guard to force the dying matriarch-owner's heirs, which she shamelessly dispossesses and reduces to 'staff', to taste destitution under absurd, gun-imposed contracts. The 'slaves' are made free partners, supposed to vote for progress after lessons from Grace. But almost all her democracy-pupils prove fickle, dumb and selfish, except old Willem. Her and their ignorance in Southern planting and crafty Dixie ways means more problems are created then solved. By the time dad returns to pick her up or abandon her for good, she's the one who has learned and changed the most.

Plot: While on furlough, U. S. Thinking "Breezy" is rich, a jovial old swindler, "General" Courtney, who has planted a phony treasure on a desert island, offers to locate it for them if they finance the expedition. Courtney has enlisted the aid of a flashy blonde, Maureen, to further entice "Breezy's" interest. The two sailors talk their buddies into putting up their money also. They actually find a real buried treasure on the island which causes many complications to arise.

But don't call it poetry. Bingo insists almost angrily that what he writes are songs, despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary, he sings them. At Pseudo Programs, Bingo performed five of these songs live, and premiered the video Oh Madonna, created at Pseudo under the aegis of Pseudo Founter Josh Harris and Producer Galinksy.

New York City’s last jukebox repairman is still in business.
Walking in to Perry Rosen’s garage in Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn can feel a little bit like going back in time. About a half dozen antique jukeboxes line the walls, and there’s stacks of pre-digital gadgetry on every shelf and workbench in the room--old-fashioned gizmos with springs and motors, dusty gearboxes and rust-covered panels with missing fuses. There’s not a motherboard or a computer chip in sight.
When Perry Rosen began fixing old jukeboxes in the 1970’s, it was a hobby— he mostly repaired TV sets and telephones at the time. By 1998, it had become a career, and now he’s one of the few people in the United States who does it full time.
When he first entered the business, most service calls were to bars and restaurants, but these days, jukeboxes are generally found in the homes of private collectors. A majority of his clientele are baby-boomers, who, like Rosen, are drawn to the machines for their nostalgic appeal.
“There was always something for nostalgia that’s been in my DNA,” says Rosen, who remembers being fascinated by an antique telephone he found in his kindergarten class in the 1960s. That appreciation for antique machinery extends to old cars, pinball machines and television sets as well, but it’s clear from the three jukeboxes he proudly displays in his living room that these machines are his primary obsession.
However, despite this passion-- he can talk about jukeboxes for hours on end—there’s one thing about these machines he’s never been so crazy about.
When asked if he’s a music lover, Rosen responds simply:
“No--I’m a mechanic.”

Perry Rosen: This is a 1967 Rockola Jukebox, I consider this to be my engineering degree . . . Ummmm. . . .I first got this when I was 16 and it wasn’t in working condition—it was missing speakers, I brought it back to my house, took it apart, and figured out how to repair it.

Jerilynn Safran: Hi Perry, how’ve you been. . .yes the Rockola’s sick. The Rockola’s sick, it’s been sick since New Year’s. . . It just kept spinnin’.
PR: Huh. . .looks like it might be the problem . . . ah, bingo. . . we have some action here.
JS: In the 1970s, very early 1970s, there was a song called “Palabras Palabras,” but the song itself was. . .could not find it, for love or for money. I wound up doing a search on the internet, and I found it in French. . .this is it. Yup, this is it!
(Sing begins playing)
AN: So bring us back to that martini bar.
JS: It wasn’t a martini bar, it was a sleaze bar that we were having martinis in! But, um. . . it was a lot of fun, it was a lot of fun. . .
PR: Yeah, that was about as easy as it gets. I’m happy though, I didn’t want a major problem there where a motor or something has to be changed.
AN: How did you feel watching them danced, though, that was sweet.
PR: Yeah, that was nice.
AN: Do you often have situations like that?
PR: What just a blown fuse?
AN: No, situations where you get to them enjoy, their. . .
PR: I’ve seen ‘em dance, I’ve seen ‘em cry.
AN: So does that bring up any emotion inside you.
PR: Not really, it just makes you happy to be in a business that makes people happy. That gives people joy.
(music rises)

This is a video from this year’s Birdie Jo reunion show at Sam Bond’s Garage, shot by Laura Strobel and Jill Catino on my iPhone. We opened for Petunia and the Vipers, and Mood Area 52, who was throwing an album release party for their new album “1952 Philanski House.” Every year I go back to Eugene for Thanksgiving, we have a big crazy feast at Michael and Leah’s, and Birdie Jo plays a show. It is always a high point of my year. My folks come down from Portland, sometimes my brother will fly in, I haven’t missed a Thanksgiving in Eugene since I moved to L.A.
Birdie Jo started out as a band in a movie. Our friend Laura wanted to shoot a short with Scott K., myself, and my neighbor, Ty Connor, as troubled band-mates. Scott and I stayed up all night and wrote “First Among Equals” in this freezing theater/garage loft I was living in at the time, for Laura’s video.
(Scott K. had a skate-punk band when we were in high school called Dogwater that kicked ass, I had auditioned to sing for them at one point. I played a song for them that I wrote called “Festival,” that sounded a lot like “Bela Lugosi’s Dead” by Bauhaus. They passed. Not punk enough. “Festival” became the first song for The Good Madmen, my first post-high school band.)
We shot a bunch of stuff with Laura, silly scenes of rehearsals, band fights and getting kicked out of John Henry’s (the OLD John Henry’s.) Scott K. and I wanted to keep rehearsing and writing new songs, Ty wasn’t that into it, he was writing and listening to Miles Davis on vinyl and didn’t really want to be in a band.
I had been working with Michael at the Glenwood Café, a 24-hour joint on Campus that was Christian-owned, but forgiving enough to have two white boys with dreadlocks running the floor. We would have late-night neighborhood talent shows in Michael’s apartment on a stage that consisted of a palette in the middle of a doorway.
I basically forced Michael to be the new drummer for Birdie Jo. He didn’t have a drum set, he just pieced together some suitcases and pots and pans and that’s how we started. I wanted to have a band consisting of people I admired and wanted to hang out with, I figured the music would come from there.
A super-hot blonde girl moved in next door to Michael. We had been staying up all night, riding our bikes through Eugene, going for midnight swims in the river, stealing ears of corn from the canning plant and throwing them like newspapers onto people porches. We drank Mickey’s Big Mouth’s and made a walkway in the backyard of the used screwtops. I told him if he didn’t make that girl next door his girlfriend, I would. Her name was Leah, he’s married to her to this day.
I had this vintage 1939 Epiphone F-hole archtop hollowbody that would serve as the Birdie Jo guitar, an unlikely axe for a punk-rock band. Scott K. could make that thing sing, we played over 200 shows on that antique. He played with a wiry, rough intensity, I plodded along aggressively on bass, with Michael flailing wildly on his pots and pans. We attracted a strong local following with our lo-fi brand of edgy punk, becoming the house band at John Henry’s, opening for some great touring acts, The Dickies, Zeke, Turbonegro, Heatmiser, The Stinky Puffs, The Voluptuous Horror of Karen Black, to name just a few. We usually played for free beer, and often left the bar feeling extremely well-paid on the rich array of strong, local microbrew beers that had become popular.
Scott K. had just had a baby with his wife Tracy, I was there the day little Ruthie was born. For all his hedonistic glory, Scott was a really responsible dad, driving trucks for Organically Grown Co-op, waking up at 4am 5 days a week. While we played a ton of local shows, Scott’s priority was his family, Michael was finishing college, and with the exception of one wild roadtrip Scott and I took through Mexico and Central America, we would never tour extensively.
We produced one album, “Transient Knows The System,” which featured a picture of the real Birdie Jo on the cover. Birdie Jo Hoaks was a woman who was arrested on Christmas Eve of 1995 in Salt Lake City for impersonating a young boy in order to obtain social services. She was homeless, and had sought entry into a woman’s shelter, but was turned away because

I see the worn and hopeful faces of Bingo Dawson, Ricky Lavallee, Billy Combes and Harry Wilson – poor and homeless aboriginal survivors of the residential schools genocide who were all targeted and killed by a program approved by Liberal Prime Minister Jean Chretien and his cabinet.
The disclosure by one brave, honest civil servant of a confidential memo describing a plan for state terrorism is more than a smoking gun – it is an enormous smoking cannon.
