Tilopa (Prakrit; Sanskrit: Talika or Tilopada) (988–1069) was born in either Chativavo (Chittagong), Bengal or Jagora, Bengal in India. He was a tantric practitioner and mahasiddha. He practiced Anuttarayoga Tantra, a set of spiritual practices intended to accelerate the process of attaining Buddhahood. Naropa is considered his main student.
Tilopa was born into the priestly caste – according to some sources, a royal family – but he adopted the monastic life upon receiving orders from a dakini (female buddha whose activity is to inspire practitioners) who told him to adopt a mendicant and itinerant existence. From the beginning, she made it clear to Tilopa that his real parents were not the persons who had raised him, but instead were primordial wisdom and universal voidness. Advised by the dakini, Tilopa gradually took up a monk's life, taking the monastic vows and becoming an erudite scholar. The frequent visits of his dakini teacher continued to guide his spiritual path and close the gap to enlightenment.
Lo! This is self-awareness! It surpasses all avenues of speech and thought. I, Tilopa, have nothing to reveal. You should know it yourself through inward examination. I'm so perfect you say
I'm so special, no one can compare
How can you see all these things in me?
I can't believe you
I'm looking in my funhouse mirror
I'm disgusted by what i see
I strain to catch a glimpse of the light
You claim to see around me
And the more i try to run away
The more you pull me back
And the more you try to love me
The more that i attack
I just can't see what you see in me
You want to destroy self-portraits that i paint
Through picasso's eyes
But it's hard to discard
Weapons that i use
In my daily self-destruction
And the more i try to run away
The more you pull me back
And the more you try to love me
The more that i attack
I just can't see what you see in me
I'm sitting on the corner of paranoid and hopelessness
Waiting, waiting
For you to take me away
I'm always trying to get rid of you
When what i really want
Is for you to stay
And the more i try to run away
The more you pull me back
And the more you try to love me
The more that i attack
I just can't see what you see in me
I want to see what you see
I wish i could see what you see
