Keio University (慶應義塾大学, Keiō Gijuku Daigaku), abbreviated as Keio (慶應) or Keidai (慶大), is a Japanese university located in Minato, Tokyo. It is known as the oldest institute of higher education in Japan. It is also ranked as one of the top private universities in Japan. Founder Fukuzawa Yukichi originally established it as a school for Western studies in 1858 in Edo (now Tokyo). It has eleven campuses in Tokyo and Kanagawa. It has ten faculties: Letters, Economics, Law, Business and Commerce, Medicine, Science and Technology, Policy Management, Environment and Information Studies, Nursing and Medical Care, and Pharmacy.
Keio ranks 501-600th in Times Higher Education World University Ranking.
The university is one of the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology's thirteen "Global 30" Project universities. In the United States, Keio has a high school called "Keio Academy of New York".
Keio traces its history to 1858 when Fukuzawa Yukichi, who had studied the Western educational system at Brown University in the United States, started to teach Dutch while he was a guest of the Okudaira family. In 1868 he changed the name of the school to Keio Gijuku and devoted all his time to education. While Keiō's initial identity was that of a private school of Western studies, it expanded and established its first university faculty in 1890, and became known as a leading institute in Japanese higher education. It was the first Japanese university to reach its 150th anniversary, celebrating this anniversary in 2008.
A university (Latin: universitas, "a whole") is an institution of higher (or tertiary) education and research which grants academic degrees in various subjects and typically provides undergraduate education and postgraduate education. The word "university" is derived from the Latin universitas magistrorum et scholarium, which roughly means "community of teachers and scholars."
The original Latin word "universitas" refers in general to "a number of persons associated into one body, a society, company, community, guild, corporation, etc." At the time of the emergence of urban town life and medieval guilds, specialised "associations of students and teachers with collective legal rights usually guaranteed by charters issued by princes, prelates, or the towns in which they were located" came to be denominated by this general term. Like other guilds, they were self-regulating and determined the qualifications of their members.
In modern usage the word has come to mean "An institution of higher education offering tuition in mainly non-vocational subjects and typically having the power to confer degrees," with the earlier emphasis on its corporate organization considered as applying historically to Medieval universities.

Here are 5 of my recommended interesting and unusual Japanese street food to try in Kamakura. Kamakura is only an hour away from Tokyo and makes a great destination for a day trip from Tokyo. It has many unique and interesting Japanese street food here that you can't get in Tokyo. One of the famous foods here is the whitebait aka shirasu. Since the ocean is nearby you will see a lot of shops offering the local speciality in their menus. A lot of the street foods here have also incorporated the whitebait into the typical Japanese street foods which gives it a Kamakura twist to it. All the shops I went to are off the main street - Komachi Street. Here are the street food I ate and the shops I visited in order: Chocolate croquette (deep fried mash potato) Beef croquette (deep fried mas...

Hey family and friends, In anticipation for my year long study abroad trip to Keio University next year I thought I would draw out the events which have lead to my love and appreciation for Japan and its culture. I styled the video after the popular "Draw My Life" videos and hopefully (despite limited resources!) it didn't turn out to shabby. I hope that it shows you all a small part of my story and makes you as excited as I am for next year! - Elena
Being the first African American to summit Mount Everest, Sophia Danenberg is often asked: Was it everything you dreamed of and hoped for? Her answer may be surprising as she talks about how our hopes and dreams may in fact be limiting what we are able to do. Sophia Danenberg didn't go on her first hike until college, but in 2006 she became the first African-American and the first black woman to climb to the summit of Mount Everest. Sophia’s love of the mountains has taken her all over the world, from the Matterhorn in Switzerland, to Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, to Ama Dablam in Nepal and to Aconcagua in Argentina. While at sea level, she leads the international policy analysis program in environment, health and safety (EH&S;) at The Boeing Company, advising the corporation on EH&S; po...

Oh yeah, ooh
I know every now and then
We will have our problems
I know sometimes we won't see
Eye to eye, baby
Don't think I'm gonna sit here and
Let you turn away
Cause happy is where I wanna make you, so I gotta know
- Tell me can we conversate
So we can get to learn each other
I don't think that we should wait
If this is a forever thing
I know we made a few mistakes
And in return we hurt each other
We really need to conversate
If this is a forever thing
At first I wasn't serious
About you and me
And in return me and my boys
Played the field ran the street
Because of you I've changed the
Man in me, I'm sincere
Now happy is what we gotta be so I gotta know
Love was right in front of me
I was so blind baby I couldn't see
Now I really know for sure
