Lebanon (i/ˈlɛbənɒn/ or /ˈlɛbənən/; Arabic: لبنان Libnān or Lubnān; Lebanese Arabic: [lɪbˈneːn]; Aramaic: לבנאן; French: Liban), officially the Lebanese Republic (Arabic: الجمهورية اللبنانية al-Jumhūrīyah al-Lubnānīyah; Lebanese Arabic: [elˈʒʊmhuːɾɪjje l.ˈlɪbneːnɪjje]; French: République libanaise), is a country in Western Asia. It is bordered by Syria to the north and east and Israel to the south. Lebanon's location at the crossroads of the Mediterranean Basin and the Arabian hinterland facilitated its rich history and shaped a cultural identity of religious and ethnic diversity.
The earliest evidence of civilization in Lebanon dates back more than seven thousand years, predating recorded history. Lebanon was the home of the Canaanites/Phoenicians and their kingdom, a maritime culture that flourished for over a thousand years (c. 1550–539 BC). In 64 BC, the region came under the rule of the Roman Empire, and eventually became one of the Empire's leading centers of Christianity. In the Mount Lebanon range a monastic tradition known as the Maronite Church was established. As the Arab Muslims conquered the region, the Maronites held onto their religion and identity. However, a new religious group, the Druze, established themselves in Mount Lebanon as well, generating a religious divide that has lasted for centuries. During the Crusades, the Maronites re-established contact with the Roman Catholic Church and asserted their communion with Rome. The ties they established with the Latins have influenced the region into the modern era.

Lebanon's media is crowded, diverse and highly politicised. Last year's protests over the rubbish crisis is a case in point. It's a story of how a deeply divided media fractured the consensus on a civic issue - and the activists who are pushing for alternative narratives ever since. These media institutions are an extension to the political status quo. It would be naïve to think that any movement, will not be attacked by this media. Jad Melki, associate professor of journalism and media studies, American University Beirut Where democracy is concerned, Lebanese media enjoys more liberties than many other countries in the region. However, the problem lies elsewhere - the politics. The intricate network of corporate, political and sectarian strings attached to each and every channel compl...

Current and former U.S. officials told The Associated Press and ABC News on Monday Dozens of spies working for the CIA were captured recently in Lebanon and Iran. The CIA's operations in Lebanon have been badly damaged after Hezbollah identified and captured a number of the U.S. spies. Hezbollah's longtime leader, Sheik Hassan Nasrallah, boasted on television in June that he had rooted out at least two CIA spies who had infiltrated the ranks of Hezbollah, which the U.S. considers a terrorist group closely allied with Iran. Though the U.S. Embassy in Lebanon officially denied the accusation, current and former officials concede that it happened and the damage has spread even further. According to a report by ABC News, there were two distinct espionage rings targeting Iran and Hezbollah in w...
A documentary created by former Merrill College student Samia Badih ('08) as part of her Carnegie Seminar Practicum. "My nine-minute documentary tells the story of Palestinian refugees in Lebanon, their civil and human rights and current living conditions. They are the sons and daughters of those who fled their homes almost 60 years ago in 1948. Today they live in refugee camps across Lebanon and their refugee status is passed on from father to child."
Extracts from news and current affairs documentaries released during 2014. This reel contains material from various projects in Syria, Ukraine, South Sudan, Lebanon and Bangladesh.
What worries writer Chaker Khazaal most when he visits refugee camps in Europe and the Middle East is a pervasive sense of hopelessness. As he sees it, the desperation that comes from a lack of opportunity makes refugees vulnerable to extremist organisations offering them a route out. "These are people we have failed as a community, as a global community," Khazaal told the Thomson Reuters Foundation in a recent visit to our London office. A second generation refugee, Khazaal knows these feelings well. Like his parents, Khazaal was born in a Palestinian refugee camp in Lebanon. But his story is not typical: after learning English from visiting aid workers, he won a scholarship to York University in Canada. He now lives in New York City and writes articles and fiction about the plight of r...

Along busy Hamra street, in west Beirut, Syrians fleeing their country's civil war have opened up scores of shops that compete with older ones run by Lebanese already hurting because of a sharp drop in tourism. Restaurants run by Syrians offer menus that rival Lebanon's famed Mediterranean cuisine, selling traditional dishes from the Syrian cities of Aleppo and Damascus. On street corners, Syrians now sell everything from vegetables, falafel and flower arrangements, assembled and wrapped Syrian style. Indeed, many of the neighbourhood shops' employees, lorry drivers, and delivery boys are Syrian - as increasingly are the city's doormen. "Lebanon is in need of labourers," Nabil, a Syrian waiter, told The Associated Press. "Syrian labourers are prepared to work longer hours than Lebanes...

Manakish, also mannish, manaeesh or manakeesh or in singular form man'ousheh is proudly a popular Lebanese food consisting of dough topped with thyme, cheese, or ground meat. Similar to a pizza, it can be sliced or folded, and it can either be served for breakfast or lunch. The word manaqish is the plural of the Arabic word manqūshah (from the root verb naqasha 'to sculpt, carve out'), meaning that after the dough has been rolled flat, it is pressed by the fingertips to create little dips for the topping to lie in. Traditionally, women would bake dough in a communal oven in the morning, to provide their family with their daily bread needs, and would prepare smaller portions of dough with different toppings for breakfast at this time. Manakish is popular in most Levantine countries, as we...

Dozens of additional artisans were there to vend their wares and support the event. Families were everywhere as well as young adults dancing and just enjoying the good weather and music. Health Care in Lebanon from "International Health Care Systems". The Republic of Lebanon is a parliamentary democracy and a middle-income country with a population of 4.6 million inhabiting a land of 10,452 km2. Due to the conflict in neighboring Syria, an additional 1.2 million refugees have entered Lebanon since 2011. Almost two-thirds of the population is between ages 15-64 years. It has one of the highest proportions of elderly in Middle East North African region. Reforms over the past two decades have helped rebuild and develop much of the country; however challenges remain due to the political instability. Nevertheless numerous advances have been made, including in improved health services and key indicators such as life expectancy and maternal and child mortality. The healthcare sec...

ABC works with the Saint George university hospital to support its health fair's main objectives, namely to emphasize the role of prevention in maintaining health and to promote early detection as a way of increasing the success rate of health care treatments. This event offered the chance to benefit from free medical consultations and discounted testing. And because ABC cares about its customers' health, it also helps organize the fair's medical conferences, which are aimed at raising public awareness about health issues.

Check out to see what they are doing at: www.medair.org This film is a collections of sights and sounds from our experience in the informal settlements of the Bekaa Valley where more than 130.000 Syrian refugees are seeking safety. The government has been hesitant to allow formal refugee camps, so these families are living in makeshift shelters on rented farmland from Lebanese farmers with little to no amenities such as water and sanitation. The Bekaa Valley is situated just an hour drive West to the capitol, Beirut, and...

"No, Madam" there are currently 200,000 migrant domestic workers in Lebanon who live at their employer's family home. I have been documenting horrific stories for the past few months, but this was one kept me awake all night. As I introduced myself to her and explained how important her story is, her eyes welled up with tears as she held her pregnant stomach. We were sitting in a white "interview room" at the Caritas Migrant Center, where they receive between three to six domestic maids a day who have been abused/ trafficked. It took me 1.5 months to get this meeting. Just before we started recording, I could hear a maid crying in the interview room next to ours. When 23-year-old Najat*, made her journey from Ghana to Lebanon to work as a domestic maid, she aimed to save money t...

I collected this recipe during my trips to the Middle East where the best Hummus is made. ENJOY HUMMUS RECIPE: Ingredients: • 2 cups dried chickpeas • 1 teaspoon baking soda for soaking (makes the skins of the chickpeas softer for creamier Hummus) • ¼ teaspoon baking soda for cooking • 1 cup Tahini (the best you can get, e.g. from Lebanon, Palestine…, more than half of the taste of the Hummus comes from Tahini) • juice from 2 lemons • ½ teaspoon cumin • 2 garlic cloves • 1 heaping teaspoon salt (ca. 10g) • some cold water (ca. 100ml) garnish: • good olive oil • cumin • paprika • parsley enjoy with pita bread Soak the chickpeas in clean water over night with 1 teaspoon of baking soda. The peas will double their volume. Drain the chickpeas and put them in a pot. Cover with wa...

A documentary by Marco Pasquini Italy-Libano, 2009. DVCPro-HD, 84'/52' Arabic with sub English and Italian Beirut. The Gaza Hospital, overstanding the Palestinian refugee camps of Sabra and Chatila, used to be avanguard health centre run by the Palestinian Red Crescent Society and a key part of the Palestinian Liberation Organization revolutionary project. The Hospital witnessed and endured the Israeli invasion and the Lebanese civil war, being destroyed and later set up as a refugee camp. These days, the ten-storey-high building carries the marks and the bullets of its past over the facades. Many refugees, over the course of years of hostilities, have found this hospital as a place to settle down. The tragic events in Syria, now well into their fifth year, have caused an estimated 1,300,000 inhabitants, mostly, women, children and elderly people from neighbouring urban and rural locations, to take refuge in Lebanon. The share of the Beqa' Valley has been moderately estimated at 700,000 refugees many with young children in need of relief assistance as well as a variety of essential educational services. Presently, a large proportion of refugee children and adolescents are out of school, exposing them to all manner of exploitation and abuse, with a strong likelihood that their effects lasting many years in the future. We, a group of Syrian ladies, working under the umbrella of the Social Support Society (Lebanon), have been providing relief assistance to Syrian refugees in the Beq...

Despite the devastation and political upheaval in Lebanon after the July 2006 Israeli invasion, the Beirut Marathon Association chose to move forward with their November event. However, five days before the race was set to begin, government minister Pierre Gemayel was assassinated. The country went into three days of national mourning, with thousands gathering in downtown Beirut as an expression of both grief and unity. After much deliberation, the Marathon Association again decided to go ahead with their event. When further political hurdles and delays materialized, there was mounting concern that the Lebanese people might be fearful of taking part in the marathon—yet more than 22,000 people showed up to participate in the 5km, 10km and 42km races, with "For the Love of Lebanon" as the ev...
Commissioned by the Lebanese Ministry of Tourism, We spent 5 summer months filming Lebanon from Above, including its rural, urban, cultural touristic and historical location, as well as the amazing number of festivals. The idea was to show Lebanon's beauty, diversity and wealth from another angle (above), in order to encourage and promote international and domestic tourism. My main personal goal is to remind us all that Lebanon is not all about problems, political turmoil, trash...etc but is first and foremost a country that has so much to offer on such a small portion of land, and it still, in spite of everything, truly beautiful. Maybe by seeing this video, people who lost sight of what Lebanon truly is, will have newfound optimism and strength to participate in steering the country i...

Elective placement to Lebanon and travelled around the country outside of work. Beirut. Jounieh. Byblos (Jbeil). Chouf and more. Plenty of experiences including boat trips, paragliding, music concerts and of course, a mix of food. Includes some tourist destinations and some unique experiences with locals. Jetta Grotto was extraordinary but sadly we couldn't record inside so I've added some from Kfarhim Grotto when we passed by that area. A place with plenty of culture to take in, made this as my goodbye souvenir ! Credits: First soundtrack: Credit to DJ Rodge; now my favourite track of the summer - heard it performed live at the closing ceremony of the Byblos International Festival ! Second soundtrack: Local singers in Baalbek Third soundtrack: Folklore music

I decided to leave my trip in Jordan opened and unplanned and boy was it worth it. The first moment I arrived in Jordan I met Moni, a fellow traveler from Lebanon and we decided to tackle Jordan together from Amman, Jerash to Petra, Wadi Rum, Aqaba and at the end we went camping in Sharhabil Bin Hassneh EcoPark. While camping, we weren't able to find anything to do so we decided to help the locals build fences around the park. This video is a showcase of our trip and hopefully I can transfer the energy we experienced of the country. For the editing of the video, I decided t...

PLEASE NOTE: When this film uses the word "Jews," it is making reference to European Jews who came to Palestine in 1948 ( was meant to fix it but never got around to it). Also at the start "country" is making reference to Australia. Made this film when I was 15 years of age ( I'm 20 now) for a high-school project back in 2008. There are mistakes and It could do with some touch ups here and there, but in a nutshell it's a good attempt for my first film. The quality is not that great but oh well. "My Journey by Nawal Abdi (a year 11 Burwood Girls High student) is based on the recollections of her grandfather, Mahmoud Abdi, who was forced to leave his mother, brothers and homeland of Palestine, to travel to Lebanon in 1948. Lebanon: The Battle of Abra - Al Jazeera World Al Jazeera Arabic reporter Tamer Almisshal investigates a confrontation in 2013 that highlights the serious tensions in Lebanese politics, the rise and role of Hezbollah, the emergence of Salafi-inspired groups and the depth of the country’s continuing sectarian divide. What became known as the Battle of Abra is supposed to have begun with the killing of three soldiers in an attack by armed supporters of the conservative Sunni cleric Ahmed al-Assir. They’re alleged to have attacked an army checkpoint in Sidon’s Abra neighbourhood on June 23, 2013. Two days of intense fighting followed, resulting in the deaths of at least 17 Lebanese soldiers, more than an estimated 30 of al-Assir’s supporters, two civilians and (according to some accounts) ...

Lebanon has long been known for being the sex tourism capital of the Middle East. For years people from around the region have flocked to its “super night clubs” in the hope of meeting and sleeping with women. But the influx of Syrian refugees has pushed more people into the sex industry, with many Syrians turning to prostitution to survive. Has anybody ever been to Lebanon?
Does anybody really care to go, at all?
Anybody want to go to Lebanon
Where you can read the writings on the wall?
Do the caravans still ride across the sand
Or is the season causing everything sacred to fall?
Do the sages sing their chant throughout the land
Or has their song been silenced over the centuries, to
all?
Does the sun still kiss the earth in Lebanon?
Does the moonlight still reflect the sand at night?
Can a prophet still come out of Lebanon
Or has the thirst for profit changed the times?
Do Phonecian spirits dance across the sand?
Do the cedar trees still standing next to the ocean
still grow?
Do the sages sing their chant throughout the land
Or has their song been silenced?
Does the temple still exist in Lebanon
Or have the winds of time been blowing hard, for all?
Does the mosque still sing the hymn of Lebanon
Reciting old inscriptions from the wall?
Do the caravans now crawl across the sand
And is the season causing everyone sacred to cry?
Can the people of the land still hear the call
Or has the song been silenced over the centuries, to
