After learning about Tom McCall during the creation this video he truly became someone I would have voted for. He had a vision for our state that still lives on today.

This is a speech given by Oregon's former Republican Governer, Tom McCall, on August 25th, 1970. In this historic speech, McCall explains the reasons for supporting Vortex I: A Biodegradable Festival of Life, a huge free state-sponsered rock and roll concert in McIver Park, in order to draw attention and potential violent protests away from the People's Army Jamboree, a group planning to protest and disrupt the American Legion Convention where President Nixon was rumored to be a planned speaker. Violence and rioting seemed inevitable, so McCall decided to attempt a creative solution.
The announcement of the creation of Vortex I was a risky decision by McCall, one which he called "political suicide." Sure enough, though, Vortex I was an incredible success, and McCall won the next election easily, winning many Democrat votes for his successful handling of the Legion incident.
This speech was a turning point for the early history of the Rainbow Gathering. At Vortex I, founding councils were held, and the Rainbow Family of Living Light was born. According to hip-story, Greenpeace was also officially birthed in these councils.
Because a Republican Governer running for re-election decided to cooperate with the hippies rather than call in the military to bust heads and brutalize the protesters, the Rainbow Gathering has existed for 40 years.

Oregon Governor Tom McCall's pioneering fight to clean up the state's waterways and to control development in the late 1960s still resonates today. At the Nov. 11 Corvallis Science Pub, Oregon State historian Bill Robbins will discuss the significance of McCall's leadership.
Robbins will also show McCall's famous documentary, Pollution in Paradise, which aired on KGW-TV in 1962.
The Science Pub presentation begins at 6 p.m. in the Old World Deli located at 341 SW Second St. in Corvallis. It is free and open to the public.
"With an aristocratic, East Coast family background and a large-sized ego," says Robbins, "McCall proved himself a man of the people, one who inspired deep affection for his adopted and beloved state. In a significantly less polarized political environment, he worked across party lines to achieve significant policy objectives that we live with to the present day."

The state's Beach Bill declared that the entirety of the state's coastline was for public use and access and that no development could impede that access. But before the law could even exist, it had to be determined where the 'beach' ended and 'property' began. In this rare KGW News footage, Governor Tom McCall, a former KGW News broadcaster, assembled scientists, helicopters and a small armada of journalists and descended on the Oregon coast to measure the beach and make the determination of what would become public.
This clip also includes footage of Governor McCall signing the beach bill into law and his comments on the occasion.

Nestucca Spit Press and Know Your City partnered with us for this event. KYC released their new comic, "Tom McCall & The Vortex" and Dirt Vortex! provided us with TWO awesome musical sets! Tom McCall
Thomas Lawson "Tom" McCall (March 22, 1913 – January 8, 1983) was an American politician and journalist in the state of Oregon. A Republican, he was the 30th Governor of Oregon from 1967 to 1975. A native of Massachusetts, he grew up there and in Central Oregon before attending the University of Oregon. After college he worked as a journalist including time at Portland's The Oregonian during World War II.
Later he worked in radio and then in television as a newscaster and political commentator. He made an unsuccessful bid for Congress in 1954, losing in the general election to Edith Green. While working for TV station KGW, he produced a documentary on pollution in Oregon, which helped to spur environmental cleanup of the air and the Willamette River. In 1964, McCall won his first political office, Oregon Secretary of State, followed by two terms as Governor of Oregon. As governor he worked towards environmental cleanup, the Oregon Bottle Bill, and public ownership of beaches on the Oregon Coast among others. Tom McCall Waterfront Park in Portland is one of several items named in his honor.

Governor of Oregon
The Governor of Oregon is the head of the executive branch of Oregon's state government and serves as the commander-in-chief of the state's military forces. The title of governor was also applied to the office of Oregon's chief executive during the provisional and U.S. territorial governments.
The current governor of Oregon is Kate Brown, a Democrat who took office following the resignation of Governor John Kitzhaber amid scandal. The Governor's current salary was set by the 2001 Oregon Legislature at $93,600 annually.
Constitutional descriptions
Article V of the Oregon State Constitution sets up the legal framework of the Oregon Executive Branch.
Eligibility
Article V, Section 1 states that the governor must be a U.S. citizen, at least 30 years old, and a resident of Oregon for at least three years before the candidate's election. Section 2 extends ineligibility to the following:

Oregon Constitution Article V, sections 4-7, outline the formal gubernatorial election procedures such as publishing the winner, ties, disputed elections, and terms of office.

Winston and the rest of the band gave an amazing tribute to his passing. Prior to the song, Winston spoke out over the recent loss of his friend the day before, asking everybody to live all of our days as it if were our last, to live with an open mind and with an open heart after which Winston breaks down while Jeff plays his tap solo mid-song.

This is a speech given by Oregon's former Republican Governer, Tom McCall, on August 25th, 1970. In this historic speech, McCall explains the reasons for supporting Vortex I: A Biodegradable Festival of Life, a huge free state-sponsered rock and roll concert in McIver Park, in order to draw attention and potential violent protests away from the People's Army Jamboree, a group planning to protest and disrupt the American Legion Convention where President Nixon was rumored to be a planned speaker. Violence and rioting seemed inevitable, so McCall decided to attempt a creative solution. The announcement of the creation of Vortex I was a risky decision by McCall, one which he called "political suicide." Oregon Governor Tom McCall's pioneering fight to clean up the state's waterways and to control development in the late 1960s still resonates today. At the Nov. 11 Corvallis Science Pub, Oregon State historian Bill Robbins will discuss the significance of McCall's leadership. Robbins will also show McCall's famous documentary, Pollution in Paradise, which aired on KGW-TV in 1962. The Science Pub presentation begins at 6 p.m. in the Old World Deli located at 341 SW Second St. in Corvallis. It is free and open to the public. In 1967 Oregon took the lead nationally in creating legislation protecting its coastline. The state's Beach Bill declared that the entirety of the state's coastline was for public use and access and that no development could impede that access. But before the law could even exist, it had to be determined where the 'beach' ended and 'property' began. In this rare KGW News footage, Governor Tom McCall, a former KGW News broadcaster, assembled scientists, helicopters and a small armada of journalists and descended on the Oregon coast to measure the beach and make the determination of what would become public. This clip also includes footage of Governor McCall signing the beach bill into law and his comments on the occasion.
