The USSR was not only a vast closed territory with extensive geographical boundaries that stretched from Europe through Asia but is also a huge well of memory or dis-memory - a utopian vision that became a dystopian nightmare lasting nearly a century. The story of Communism is the story of the 20th century. For many, the Soviet Union existed, like their childhood, as a fairy tale where many of the realities of life were hidden from plain view. When the Berlin Wall finally fell so too did the illusion of that utopia. But time changes memory. The ex-Soviets confused the memory of their innocent youth for their nation's utopian vision, unable to confront its history and thus creating nostalgia for tragedy. This book tries to seek and portray the socialist dream, the nightmare of the USSR beneath the veneer and the reality that emerged after the fall. And like all fairy tales try to teach us: the hard lessons of self-reliance. The Tupolev Tu-144 was the first commercial supersonic transport aircraft (SST). It was one of only two SSTs to enter commercial service, the other being Anglo-French Concorde. The design, publicly unveiled in January 1962, was constructed in the Soviet Union under the direction of the Tupolev design bureau, headed by Alexei Tupolev. The prototype first flew on 31 December 1968 near Moscow, two months before the first flight of Concorde. The Tu-144 first went supersonic on 5 June 1969, and on 26 May 1970 became the first commercial transport to exceed Mach 2. The frequent comparisons to Concorde led to the Tu-144 being known as "Concordski" in the West. A Tu-144 crashed in 1973 at the Paris Air Show, delaying its further development. The aircraft was introduced into passenger service on 1 November 1977, almost two years after Concorde. In May 1978, another Tu-144 (an improved version, named Tu-144D) crashed in a test flight while being delivered, and the passenger fleet was permanently grounded after only 55 scheduled flights. The aircraft remained in use as a cargo plane until 1983, by which point a total of 102 commercial flights had been completed. The Tu-144 was later used by the Soviet space programme to train pilots of the Buran spacecraft, and by NASA for supersonic research.

SYNOPSIS In a remote part of Stalin's war-torn Union of the Soviet Socialist Republic, Grigori, Manager of munitions FACTORY293, faces the realities of his existence. Despite the infatuation of his female factory workforce, he is drawn to increasingly melancholic thoughts – Stalin has abandoned him. With a howling blizzard outside, the factory's power is suddenly cut, interrupting Grigori's intent to take decisive action. In a flurry to restore the power before the inspectors arrive, Grigori directs two of his machinists into the raging blizzard to investigate. ABOUT When people are forced to act like machines, malfunctions occur. Amidst the static-ridden propaganda radio broadcasts and the disorientating whitewash of the blizzard, this truth emerges and confronts our characters. Despite the story’s blizzard-swept Russian setting, FACTORY293 was made entirely in sunny Perth, Western Australia (WA). Produced by MEANING MAKER and DIGITAL MEDIA ARTS, this intentionally ambitious project was designed to throw this emergent production team into the deep end, testing and expanding their capacities across all facets of filmmaking. Within WA’s fledgling screen industry, nothing quite of this scale and nature had been undertaken before and thus, the project was largely an experiment that the team was confident, but not always certain was achievable. But the team was determined to showcase their capacity to tell stories set in any time or place; within worlds that must be designed and built from the ground up, while maintaining high production values on a shoestring budget. By demonstrating this possibility, it is the production team’s hope that the WA screen industry finds the confidence to broaden its narrative-pallet, becoming a more dexterous story telling base.
