Mount Hood, called Wy'east by the Multnomah tribe, is a potentially active stratovolcano in the Cascade Volcanic Arc of northern Oregon. It was formed by a subduction zone on the Pacific coast and rests in the Pacific Northwest region of the United States. It is located about 50 miles (80 km) east-southeast of Portland, on the border between Clackamas and Hood River counties. In addition to being Oregon's highest mountain, it is one of the loftiest mountains in the nation based on its prominence.
The height assigned to Mount Hood's snow-covered peak has varied over its history. Modern sources point to three different heights: 11,249 feet (3,429 m), a 1991 adjustment of a 1986 measurement by the U.S. National Geodetic Survey (NGS),11,240 feet (3,426 m) based on a 1993 scientific expedition, and 11,239 feet (3,426 m) of slightly older origin. The peak is home to 12 named glaciers and snowfields. It is the highest point in Oregon and the fourth highest in the Cascade Range. Mount Hood is considered the Oregon volcano most likely to erupt, though based on its history, an explosive eruption is unlikely. Still, the odds of an eruption in the next 30 years are estimated at between 3 and 7 percent, so the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) characterizes it as "potentially active", but the mountain is informally considered dormant.

Timberline Lodge is a mountain lodge on the south side of Mount Hood in Oregon, about 60 miles (97 km) east of Portland. Constructed from 1936 to 1938 by the Works Progress Administration, it was built and furnished by local artisans during the Great Depression. Timberline Lodge was dedicated September 28, 1937, by President Franklin D. Roosevelt.
The National Historic Landmark sits at an elevation of 5,960 feet (1,817 m), within the Mount Hood National Forest and is accessible through the Mount Hood Scenic Byway. Publicly owned and privately operated, Timberline Lodge is a popular tourist attraction that draws two million visitors annually. It is noted in film for serving as the exterior of the Overlook Hotel in The Shining.
Timberline Lodge, a mountain lodge and resort hotel, is a four-story structure comprising approximately 40,000 square feet. The ground-level exterior walls are heavy rubble masonry, using boulders from the immediate area, and heavy timber is used from the first floor up. The central head house section is hexagonal and 60 feet in diameter, with a six-sided stone chimney stack 92 feet high and 14 feet in diameter. Each of the six fireplace openings—three on the ground floor, three on the first floor—is five feet wide and seven feet high. Two wings, running west and southeast, flank the head house. Oregon woods used throughout the building include cedar, Douglas fir, hemlock, western juniper and ponderosa pine.

Mount Hood Meadows is one of the largest ski resorts in the U.S. state of Oregon and the largest ski resort near Mount Hood. It is located about 67 miles (108 km) east of Portland, and 35 miles (56 km) from Hood River along Oregon Route 35. It has both Alpine and Nordic ski areas and offers night skiing, lessons and equipment rentals. There are no overnight accommodations at Mount Hood Meadows itself, but a number of hotels and motels nearby offer shuttle services to the resort.
In 1964, Mount Hood National Forest announced that a feasibility study was underway for a new ski area on the east side of Mount Hood. A group of Hood River businessmen, incorporated as Hood River Meadows, Inc., had raised $3,500 to finance the study. The group included Jack L. Baldwin of Cooper Spur Ski Area, L. R. Steeves, Dr. J. Allan Henderson, and Roland B. Leavens, among others.
Situation Critical is a documentary television series. Produced in conjunction with the National Geographic Channel, the series examines various disasters or violent incidents. It replaced Seconds from Disaster, a similar program with a more forensic approach. On Oregon's majestic mountain, one misstep causes nine climbers fall into a gaping crevasse, killing three instantly. Watch as the survivors, some badly injured, fight to escape

Girlfriend and I on the summit ridge of Mt. Hood, up through the Old Chute on a south side ascent. - May, 2014 This video is a bit different for my main subsribers, but showcases one of my main hobbies. Katherine and I are avid climbers (rock and mountain) and most recently summited Kilimanjaro in East Africa, Taznaia. Filmed on a GoPro Black +
What a great way to spend a spring day in Oregon. I drove scenic highway 26 to the historic Timberline Lodge on Mount Hood. I'd seen it before but never in person. I remember it as the exterior of the Overlook Hotel in Stanley Kubrick's movie version of "The Shining." After a brief stop at the Lodge for pictures, I took off for Mirror Lake. I hiked the popular Mirror Lake Trail in the Mount Hood National Forest to find the source of the world-famous lakeside photos of Mount Hood and, thankfully, avoided any encounter with bears. It was an easy three-mile hike. Just Great!
Ten days, four mountains and one region. On the first day of our trip around the Pacific Northwest we explore Mt. Hood Meadows and find some fresh tracks along the way. Mt. Hood Meadows offers distinctive trails, ranging from smooth, slightly graded runs in beginner's area to steep slopes in Heather Canyon. Located on the sunny, wind-protected east side of Mt. Hood, this resort features some of the best snow in the Pacific Northwest. There's 430 inches of snow every year on average. The vertical drop is 2,777 feet and you can ski or ride over 2,150 acres The Good Life Pacific Northwest Series: Episode 1: Mt. I first laid eyes on Mt. Hood almost four years ago. Since that moment I've been completely enthralled and fascinated by The Mountain. After many beautiful hikes and camps in its wilderness and being able to witness its many different faces along the Timberline Trail, I was finally able to stand upon it's summit on June 1st, 2014. My friend Loren, my father, and I departed the Timberline Lodge parking lot at 11:30pm. We made it up to the Devil's Kitchen before my father decided to call it a day. Loren and I reached the summit at 6:30am where we were greeted by many other climbers. After a half hour break on the top we headed back down towards the parking lot - what a long and terrible slog that part of the trip was. We couldn't have asked for a more perfect day. There was zero wind on th...
Listening to a piece by Hauschka can be deceiving: What sounds like an ensemble of musicians and instruments is just one man, performing at one piano. His real name is Volker Bertelmann, and he hails from Dusseldorf, Germany, where he works with his "prepared piano." He wrests disruptive sounds from the instrument's 88 keys by outfitting the strings or mallets with objects such as ping-pong balls, aluminum foil and leather. His new album is titled Foreign Landscapes, and he recently visited NPR's studios to demonstrate his craft. In this video, Hauschka performs "Mount Hood" from his new album, using ping pong balls.

Seven riders from across the country converged on Oregon's beautiful Mount Hood Loop in July 2013. Thanks go to Dave for planning the trip, and to his friends, Mark (Arrow) and Doug. Dave invited two fat bikers as fill-ins, Scott and Aileen ( who invited two additional fatties, Roland and Marshall). The four day ride to three well-stocked ridge top huts was a challenge, but GPS, maps, and stick arrows helped everyone complete the 140 mile loop. In this travel video tour of Portland, Oregon, I travel to Portland, one of the most unique cities in the United States. I started my trip off by hopping off a plane and then immediately hopping onto a bus. But not just any bus, a bus operated by Brewvana Brewery Tours, the mostly women-run craft beer brewery tour company. Portland, or know as Beervana to some, is home to 55 breweries within its borders, and is truly a beer-lover's paradise. On my tour we made stops at Rogue Ales & Spirits, Laurelwood Pubic House & Brewery, Widmer Brothers Brewery and Sidecar Bar, where I had the chance to sit down over a pint with the founder and owner of Brewvana, Ashley Rose Salvitti. While in Portland, I stayed at the Tiny House Hotel, a hotel made up of, you guessed it, tiny houses. In the next po...

Mind ideas
Highway crawl, the nations die
Halfway home an all new wind
That wind hands an all new sin
Steeples built upon their graves
Ready to climb the ruins we founded
Whispering loud and clear the secret unsafe
Mind ideas
They're my dears
Highway sprawled, the nations die
Halfway home an all new wind
That wind hands an all new sin
Steeples built upon their graves
Every life loom we're marching through
Desire finds its way home to you
Desire finds its way back to you
