Samba (Portuguese pronunciation: [ˈsɐ̃bɐ]) is a Brazilian musical genre and dance style originating in Brazil, with its roots in Africa via the West African slave trade and African religious traditions, particularly Angola and the Congo. Although there were various forms of samba in Brazil in the form of various popular rhythms and regional dances that originated from the drumming, samba as music genre is seen as a musical expression of urban Rio de Janeiro, then the capital of Imperial Brazil.
It is recognized around the world as a symbol of Brazil and the Brazilian Carnival. Considered one of the most popular Brazilian cultural expressions, samba has become an icon of Brazilian national identity. The Bahian Samba de Roda (dance circle), which became a UNESCO Heritage of Humanity in 2005, is the main root of the samba carioca, the samba that is played and danced in Rio de Janeiro.
The modern samba that emerged at the beginning of the 20th century is predominantly in a 2/4 tempo varied with the conscious use of a sung chorus to a batucada rhythm, with various stanzas of declaratory verses. Traditionally, the samba is played by strings (cavaquinho and various types of guitar) and various percussion instruments such as tamborim. Influenced by American orchestras in vogue since the Second World War and the cultural impact of US music post-war, samba began to use trombones, trumpets, choros, flutes, and clarinets.
Raça Negra (Brazilian Portuguese: [ˈʁasɐ ˈneɡɾɐ]); Portuguese for "The Black Race", is a Brazilian pagode group from São Paulo.
The ensemble formed in 1983, but did not release their first album until 1991, after a demo tape got them signed to RGE. The album spawned numerous hits in Brazil, and over the next decade the group went on to sell millions of albums. They have made many appearances on Brazilian television. Among their hits are "Caroline", "Quero Ver Você Chorar," "Somente Você," "Chega", "Cigana," "Quando Te Encontrei," "Cheia de Manias," "Doce Paixão," and "Me Leva Junto com Você".
The group's music is perhaps best known to the English-speaking world as a result of a slipup at a Brazilian CD pressing plant in 1999. Several hundred copies of AOL CD-ROMs were accidentally pressed with a Raça Negra album instead of the company software.
It is noticeable that the ensemble does not present a cavaquinho or banjo, traditional instruments in the genre of pagode.
Só Pra Contrariar (translates to Just (only) to be contrary) is a Brazilian musical group formed in 1989. The band is more known for its frontman, Alexandre Pires, who has launched a successful solo career after the band's break-up.
Só Pra Contrariar was formed in Minas Gerais, Uberlândia, in 1989 by singer Alexandre Pires, who was 13 at the time. Pires convinced his brother, cousin, and some friends to form the band for fun. They took the name from a samba by the Carioca group Fundo de Quintal.
They started playing in bars around their hometown. In 1993 they recorded a demo tape and sent it to BMG. The label signed them and that same year, they released their self-titled debut album. This album sold more than 500,000 copies and they started touring heavily.
They kept releasing several albums through the 90s, but their fifth album (released in 1997) helped the group win the triple diamond record for selling 3 million copies.
In 1998, the group recorded their first album in Spanish which sold 700,000 copies. This album garnered them more awards around the world. In 1999, they released their second Spanish album titled Juegos de Amor. The album included a hit song titled "Santo Santo" that featured Cuban singer Gloria Estefan.
A quarter note (American) or crotchet (British, from the sense 'hook') is a note played for one quarter of the duration of a whole note (or semibreve). Often, musicians will say that a crotchet is one beat, but this is not always correct, as the beat is indicated by the time signature of the music; a x quarter note may or may not be the beat. Quarter notes are notated with a filled-in oval note head and a straight, flagless stem. The stem usually points upwards if it is below the middle line of the stave or downwards if it is on or above the middle line. However, the stem direction may differentiate more than one part. The head of the note also reverses its orientation in relation to the stem. (See image.)
In Unicode, the symbol is U+2669 (♩).
A related value is the quarter rest (or crotchet rest). It denotes a silence of the same duration as a quarter note. It typically appears as the symbol and occasionally as the older symbol .
The note derives from the semiminima of mensural notation. The word crotchet comes from Old French crochet, meaning 'little hook', diminutive of croc, 'hook', because of the hook used on the note in black notation. However, because the hook appeared on the eighth note (or quaver) in the later white notation, the modern French term croche refers to an eighth note.
Andreea Bănică (born 21 June 1978) is a Romanian singer. She was part of the group Exotic, alongside Claudia Pătrăşcanu and Julia Chelaru. She subsequently formed the band Blondy with Cristina Rus. Afterwards, she started a solo career, winning awards at ceremonies including the Romanian Music Awards, Romanian Top Hits, MTV European Music Awards and the Balkan Music Awards. Her songs "Love In Brazil" and "Sexy" reached number one in Romania, Bulgaria and Serbia.
She first came to public attention at the 1998 Mamaia Festival. Along with Claudia Pătrăşcanu and Julia Chelaru, she started the group Exotic. In the two years they were together, the group released three singles ("Watch me", "Sexy" and "A Kiss"), and recorded two albums: Sexxy and Passionate.
Bănică started her solo career after leaving Exotic. In 2001, together with Rus, she formed the group Blondy. The group released three albums (So Close, Part of You, Sweet and Bitter) and a replay. Altogether, Blondy released six videos, and won the award for best dance troupe offered by Radio Romania in 2003. Rus left the band in 2005, launching a solo career. Bănică continued with Blondy. Dansez, Dansez, an album composed by Laurentiu Duta, achieved gold status for sales. Two singles were released, "Lovers" and "Sweet and Bitter".

One step forward and two steps back
The crowd will roar and bones will crack
And you'll be Samba to me
And by the calm of the sea
You gave your promise to me
We go hand in hand
Backing up the band
Put things on the sand
Understand I love you
It's a rock 'n tumble, Never give up
You've got the stuff
We've got enough
We are in love
Take two steps forward and two steps back
Two steps back
It's a rock 'n tumble, Never give up
You've got the stuff
We've got enough
We are in love
