The River Mersey /ˈmɜːrzi/ is a river in North West England. Its name is derived from the Anglo-Saxon language and translates as "boundary river". The river may have been the border between the ancient kingdoms of Mercia and Northumbria and for centuries it formed part of the boundary between the historic counties of Lancashire and Cheshire.
The start of the Mersey is at the confluence of the River Tame and River Goyt in Stockport. It flows westwards through the suburban areas of south Manchester towards Warrington where the river widens before it then narrows as it passes between the towns of Runcorn and Widnes. From Runcorn the river widens into a large estuary, which is 3 miles (4.8 km) wide at its widest point near Ellesmere Port. The course of the river then heads north, with Liverpool to the east and the Wirral Peninsula to the west and finishes at Liverpool Bay. In total the river flows 70.33 miles (113 km).
Two road tunnels pass under the estuary from Liverpool, the Queensway Tunnel opened in 1934 connecting the city to Birkenhead, and the Kingsway Tunnel, opened in 1971, connects with Wallasey. The Silver Jubilee Bridge completed in 1961, crosses between Runcorn and Widnes. There is a Railway bridge adjacent to the Silver Jubilee Bridge and between Liverpool and Birkenhead there is a railway tunnel. The Mersey Ferry operates between Pier Head in Liverpool and Woodside in Birkenhead and Seacombe and has become a tourist attraction offering cruises that provide an overview of the river and surrounding areas.
A river is a natural flowing watercourse, usually freshwater, flowing towards an ocean, sea, lake or another river. In some cases a river flows into the ground and becomes dry at the end of its course without reaching another body of water. Small rivers can be referred to using names such as stream, creek, brook, rivulet, and rill. There are no official definitions for the generic term river as applied to geographic features, although in some countries or communities a stream is defined by its size. Many names for small rivers are specific to geographic location; examples are "run" in some parts of the United States, "burn" in Scotland and northeast England, and "beck" in northern England. Sometimes a river is defined as being larger than a creek, but not always: the language is vague.
Rivers are part of the hydrological cycle. Water generally collects in a river from precipitation through a drainage basin from surface runoff and other sources such as groundwater recharge, springs, and the release of stored water in natural ice and snowpacks (e.g. from glaciers). Potamology is the scientific study of rivers while limnology is the study of inland waters in general.

Filmed initially from Wigg Island, near the visitor centre. The bore was late arriving, even though the river level was relatively low and there was a westerly breeze. The bore itself was disappointing, but the flood tide was entertaining to watch as it grew in strength. A better show was on offer from Forrest Way Bridge in Warrington. Date filmed: 28th April 2017 Expected High Tide at Liverpool (Gladstone Dock): 9.95m @ 13:14 The bore passed Wigg Island Visitor Centre at 11:50 and Forrest Way Bridge at 12:56 All times BST (GMT+1) If you are interested in other bores of North West England, click on my name above (Rob Bridges) to see more.

On July 7th 2013, a group of 10 boats all with crew's of at least 2, completed one of the most wonderful cruises on the British canal/river system. Organised by canal veteran and IWA enthusiast Mike Carter. Mike has organised many of these trips in the past and has enormous experience, navigating along the commercial shipping lanes of The Manchester Ship Canal and across the sometimes treacherous tidal River Mersey. Without Mike's knowledge and skill, this trip would have been almost impossible for a single boat.

This week on The Guide with Jay & Ellie we are backstage and onstage for the International River Mersey Festival, featuring top local musicians, The Hummingbirds, Connie Lush, KOF, Paddy Clegg, The Ambition and headliner Rebecca Ferguson.
Recorded in 2011. Over recent years, the River Mersey, both inside during the winter for the Cod, and outside over the summer for Bass, Smoothhounds and Tope, has earned itself a well deserved reputation for being one of the most consistent and sheltered boat fishing venues in the country. Here Wirrall small boat club member and Scottish international Mick Duff gives us a guided tour.

Shipyards | Where The Extraordinary Take Shape | World Documentary Films Shipyards and dockyards are places where ships are repaired and built. These can be yachts, military vessels, cruise liners or other cargo or passenger ships. Dockyards are sometimes more associated with maintenance and basing activities than shipyards, which are sometimes associated more with initial construction. The terms are routinely used interchangeably, in part because the evolution of dockyards and shipyards has often caused them to change or merge roles. Countries with large shipbuilding industries include Singapore, South Korea, Australia, Japan, China, Germany, Turkey, Poland and Croatia. The shipbuilding industry tends to be more fragmented in Europe than in Asia. In European countries there are a greate...
