This large mysterious hole could be a portal to another dimension but it’s not! Sorry to disappoint. It’s actually what’s known as a gloryhole and they’re quite rare but rather interesting. This lake is found in Napa County, California where some of the best wines in the US are made. The diameter of the who reaches 72 feet and it drops an insane 280 feet! This was constructed in order to keep the artificial lake from overflowing, keeping it from flooding nearby streets. It helps control how deep the rest of the lake gets and it only really gets put to use when there’s too much water. Here in this photo you can see what the structure actually looks like when it’s not submerged underwater.
4. Spotted Lake Canada
This fascinating lake is found in British Columbia, Canada and is mysteriously spotted almost like a dalmation. This is from a complex mix of minerals deposited here such as calcium, magnesium sulfate, and sodium sulphates. Strangely enough, it also contains small amounts of titanium and silver. This was originally known to the native people and they referred to it as the Kliluk. They felt as though it was a sacred site. They felt as though the waters were therapeutic and had healing qualities to it. During world War I it was used by the allies to gather minerals that would be used in producing ammunition. It was later purchased by the native people and now you can take a look at it from behind a fence. Or maybe they’re using it to manufacture weapons.
3. Lake Titicaca
Located in the Peruvian Andes,you might come across some llamas but also one of the most mysterious lakes in the world. Many people are unable to even come here and report severe altitude sickness. It’s found 13,000 feet above sea level making it the highest navigable lake and the people that inhabit this lake build floating islands out of reeds. They live somewhat of a simple lifestyle, the same way as some of their Incan ancestors. It stretches 110 miles across and separates peru from Bolivia and some who live here have reported extraterrestrial encounters with UFO’s. Local legends talk about a lost underwater city and recently underwater archaeologists found stones that appear to create what looks like a road. Some of the stones found here, resemble an wonder of the ancient world known as Tiwanaku. What other mysteries lie below the surface of the water?
2. Exploding Lakes of Africa
Some lakes in central africa have far higher CO2 levels that other places which can suddenly erupt under certain circumstances. Such a lake is known as Lake Nyos in Cameroon where sudden explosions have been known to devastate the local population. In 1986, one spontaneous explosion killed nearly 2000 people and 3500 livestock. Lake Kivu is the third most explosive lake, located in the country of Rwanda and it certainly has the potential to be deadly since a large amount of people live nearby. Some of them are trying to extract the flammable gas in a risky process known as catalyst scrubbing.

Despite it being fairly well-known this bright pink lake has to be the strangest lake in the world hands down, even if there’s isn’t aliens hiding out here. Located in Western Australia, it’s also known as Lake Hillier, and every day of the year, it’s a solid bubblegum pink color. The lake is about 1900 feet wide and completely surrounded by eucalyptus trees and a small sand dune. No one understands completely how it manages to stay pink but some scientists believe that its a unique dye created from bacteria that feed off salt. In case you were wondering, it is safe to swim here. The guy that first took a dip must have been pretty brave! The best way to view this lake is from the sky.

The world's largest crude oil transporter has a secret buried deep in the Great Lakes—two aging oil pipelines that transport 23 million gallons of crude oil through the largest body of fresh water on earth.
Enbridge, the company that operates the pipelines, insists that the two 20-inch pipelines stretching across the Straits of Mackinac could last indefinitely. But one look at the company’s environmental record tells another story: Enbridge had more than 800 spills in North America between 1999 and 2010, dumping nearly 6.8 million gallons of oil. The largest spill released one million gallons of oil into the Kalamazoo River, only a few hours drive away from the Mackinac Straits. Activists and advocates have independently verified that parts of the pipeline—built in 1953—are sitting unsupported on the bottom of the lake and in major need of repair.
Motherboard travels to Michigan—oil spill central—to investigate the threats of crude oil being transported through one of the largest freshwater ecosystems in the world by a company with one of the most egregious environmental records.

Lake Nyos (nie-ohs)
This crater lake is located in Cameroon, on the flank of an inactive volcano … and it’s not a lake you’d want to swim in. There’s a pocket of magma underneath the lake that leaks carbon dioxide … which turns the water into carbonic acid. It’s one of only three such lakes known to be saturated with carbon dioxide in such a manner. Some 1,700 people were suffocated in nearby towns when the lake suddenly emitted a huge cloud of carbon dioxide in 1986. The event was the result of a landslide … and was thought to be the first known mass asphyxiation caused by a naturally occurring circumstance.

Abraham Lake in Canada’s Banff (banth) National Park is actually an artificial body of water. It was created in 1972 with the construction of the Bighorn Dam. But this lake, along with two others in the park has become known for a naturally occurring phenomenon. Frozen bubbles of methane gas appear like icy circles trapped within the frozen lake. In the summer, the methane bubbles rise to the surface and pop. In the winter, the gas bubbles stay frozen within the ice as they travel to the surface. When permafrost thaws out, it causes organic matter at the bottom of the lake to do likewise. As microbes decompose the organic matter, methane is released. Since methane isn’t soluble, it forms into bubbles instead.

Loch Ness
It’s a deep freshwater lake (or loch) in the Scottish highlands … and by surface area, it’s the second-largest loch in Scotland. And it’s also home to what is arguably the most famous cryptid in the world, the Loch Ness Monster. Sightings of Nessie date all the way back to 565 AD. In 2014 an expedition at Loch Ness had a large image deep below the surface register on their sonar. That followed the release of satellite images that seemed to depict a shadowy figure that measured around 30 feet long and had huge flippers.

Lake Baikal (bake-ul)
Located in southern Siberia, it’s known as the world’s deepest lake at more than 1,600 meters. And at some 25 million years old, it’s also the considered the world’s oldest lake! It exhibits a rich biodiversity, with over 1,000 species of plants and more than 2,500 animal species. Due to extreme conditions, ice hummocks, or naturally formed blocks of ice have developed. Some of the ice blocks appear to have been carved by hand … and when they catch the sun at a certain angle, the ice seems to glow with a turquoise color. In 2009, Lake Baikal presented a mystery that still hasn’t been solved. Two enormous ice circles, each measuring some 2.5 miles wide appeared on the frozen lake!

Lake Vostok (vah-stock)
It is actually located underneath the Antarctic ice at the southern Pole of Cold, beneath Russia’s Vostok Station. The surface of the subglacial freshwater lake is more than 13,000 ft (4,000 meters) below the ice. It’s thought that the lake’s water may have been isolated for up to 25 million years Pristine water samples obtained from the lake contained bacterial DNA that doesn’t match any known species listed in current global databases. Experts consider the bacterial life form to be unclassified or unidentified. The lake was discovered in 1996 by Russian and British specialists, and is one of the world’s largest lakes. Because it’s been sealed off for so long, the it could offer a glimpse of Earth prior to the Ice Age … and possibly provide clues to life on other worlds!

Stories of a monster lurking in Russia’s Lake Labynkyr (la-bink-EAR) date back to the 19th century. The remote lake is located in the Sakha Republic … the coldest and largest area of Russia. A team of divers undertook an expedition to not only conduct research on the lake … but also to see if legends about the monster might be true. Speculation about the creature includes it being anything from a giant pike to a prehistoric ichthyosaur (ick-thee-o-sore). At first the team encountered dogfish, which measured over a meter long. But on the fifth days of the expedition, their echo sounding device detected a huge object underneath their boat. The scientists were unable to identify what that object was, and have no explanation for it. They do know the object was dense, and it was located above the bottom of the lake … and it wasn’t a school of fish. When the readings were repeated, that suggested the presence of more than one large object inhabiting the lake. Is it proof that the legendary lake monsters really do exist?

Lake
A lake is an area of variable size filled with water, localized in a basin, that is surrounded by land, apart from any river or other outlet that serves to feed or drain the lake. Lakes lie on land and are not part of the ocean (except for sea lochs in Scotland and Ireland), and therefore are distinct from lagoons, and are also larger and deeper than ponds, though there are no official or scientific definitions. Lakes can be contrasted with rivers or streams, which are usually flowing. However most lakes are fed and drained by rivers and streams.
Natural lakes are generally found in mountainous areas, rift zones, and areas with ongoing glaciation. Other lakes are found in endorheic basins or along the courses of mature rivers. In some parts of the world there are many lakes because of chaotic drainage patterns left over from the last Ice Age. All lakes are temporary over geologic time scales, as they will slowly fill in with sediments or spill out of the basin containing them.
Many lakes are artificial and are constructed for industrial or agricultural use, for hydro-electric power generation or domestic water supply, or for aesthetic or recreational purposes.

Lake Superior
Lake Superior (French: Lac Supérieur) is the largest of the Great Lakes of North America. The lake is shared by Canada's Ontario to the north, the United States' Minnesota to the west, and the United States' Wisconsin and Michigan to the south. It is generally considered the largest freshwater lake in the world by surface area. It is the world's third-largest freshwater lake by volume and the largest by volume in North America.
Name
The Ojibwe call the lake gichi-gami (pronounced as gitchi-gami and kitchi-gami in other dialects), meaning "be a great sea." Henry Wadsworth Longfellow wrote the name as "Gitche Gumee" in The Song of Hiawatha, as did Gordon Lightfoot in his song, "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald". According to other sources the actual Ojibwe name is Ojibwe Gichigami ("Ojibwe's Great Sea") or Anishinaabe Gichigami ("Anishinaabe's Great Sea"). The 1878 dictionary by Father Frederic Baraga, the first one written for the Ojibway language, gives the Ojibwe name as Otchipwe-kitchi-gami (reflecting Ojibwe Gichigami). The first French explorers approaching the great inland sea by way of the Ottawa River and Lake Huron during the 17th century referred to their discovery as le lac supérieur. Properly translated, the expression means "Upper Lake," that is, the lake above Lake Huron. The lake was also called Lac Tracy (named for Alexandre de Prouville de Tracy) by 17th century Jesuit missionaries. The British, upon taking control of the region from the French in the 1760s following the French and Indian War, anglicized the lake's name to Superior, "on account of its being superior in magnitude to any of the lakes on that vast continent."

Great Lakes
The Great Lakes (also called the Laurentian Great Lakes, or the Great Lakes of North America) are a series of interconnected freshwater lakes located in northeastern North America, on the Canada–United States border, which connect to the Atlantic Ocean through the Saint Lawrence River. Consisting of Lakes Superior, Michigan, Huron (or Michigan–Huron), Erie, and Ontario, they form the largest group of freshwater lakes on Earth, containing 21% of the world's surface fresh water by volume. The total surface is 94,250 square miles (244,106 km2), and the total volume (measured at the low water datum) is 5,439 cubic miles (22,671 km3). Due to their sea-like characteristics (rolling waves, sustained winds, strong currents, great depths, and distant horizons) the five Great Lakes have also long been referred to as inland seas. Lake Baikal (Russian: о́зеро Байка́л, tr. Ozero Baykal; IPA: [ˈozʲɪrə bɐjˈkɑl]; Buryat: Байгал нуур, Mongolian: Байгал нуур, Baygal nuur, etymologically meaning, in Mongolian, "the Nature Lake") is a rift lake in Russia, located in southern Siberia, between Irkutsk Oblast to the northwest and the Buryat Republic to the southeast.
Lake Baikal is the largest freshwater lake by volume in the world, containing roughly 20% of the world's unfrozen surface fresh water. With a maximum depth of 1,642 m (5,387 ft), Baikal is the world's deepest lake. It is considered among the world's clearest lakes and is considered the world's oldest lake— at 25 million years. It is the seventh-largest lake in the world by surface area. With 23,615.39 km3 (5,700 cu mi) of fresh water, it contains more water than all the North American Great Lakes combined.
Like Lake Tanganyika, Lake Baikal was formed as an ancient rift valley, having the typical long crescent shape with a surface area of 31,722 km2 (12,248 sq mi). Baikal is home to thousands of species of plants and animals, many of which exist nowhere else in the world. The lake was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996. It is also home to Buryat tribes who reside on the eastern side of Lake Baikal, rearing goats, camels, cattle, and sheep, where the mean temperature varies from a winter minimum of −19 °C (−2 °F) to a summer maximum of 14 °C (57 °F).

Jon Jenkins
Jon Gordon Jenkins (born 17 June 1958) is an Australian virologist, information technologist and former state parliamentarian who represented the Outdoor Recreation Party in the New South Wales Legislative Council from 2003–2007.
Early life
Jenkins commenced a combined Law/Science degree at Macquarie University, then decided to pursue a career in the natural sciences and medicine. He graduated BSc (Hons) and completed a PhD degree, being awarded the University Prize for his postgraduate work in virology, which was followed by studies of viral coat proteins, protein structure prediction, artificial intelligence in medicine, virtual surgery and 3D imagery construction.
Prior to being elected to Parliament, Dr Jenkins worked in private industry and as a medical-education consultant. He was a lecturer in the Medical and IT schools at Bond University in Queensland and was retained for a time as an adjunct professor.
Parliamentary career
Jenkins was appointed in October 2003 to fill a casual vacancy from the resignation of Malcolm Jones. He resigned the seat in February 2007, not contesting the March election. He professed himself to be "anti-Green" and constructed a vitriolic web page "Dedicated to Debunking Junk Green Science".

It’s actually what’s known as a gloryhole and they’re quite rare but rather interesting. This lake is found in Napa County, California where some of the best wines in the US are made. The diameter of the who reaches 72 feet and it drops an insane 280 feet! This was constructed in order to keep the artificial lake from overflowing, keeping it from flooding nearby streets. It helps control how deep the rest of the lake gets and it only really gets put to use when there’s too much water. Here in this photo you can see what the structure actually looks like when it’s not submerged underwater. 4. Spotted Lake Canada This fascinating lake is found in British Columbia, Canada and is mysteriously spotted almost like a dalmation. This is from a complex mix of minerals deposited here such as calcium, magnesium sulfate, and sodium sulphates. Strangely enough, it also contains small amounts of titanium and silver. This was originally known to the native people and they referred to it as the Kliluk. They felt as though it was a sacred site. They felt as though the waters were therapeutic and had healing qualities to it. During world War I it was used by the allies to gather minerals that would be used in producing ammunition. It was later purchased by the native people and now you can take a look at it from behind a fence. Or maybe they’re using it to manufacture weapons. 3. Lake Titicaca Located in the Peruvian Andes,you might come across some llamas but also one of the most mysterious lakes in the world. Many people are unable to even come here and report severe altitude sickness. It’s found 13,000 feet above sea level making it the highest navigable lake and the people that inhabit this lake build floating islands out of reeds. They live somewhat of a simple lifestyle, the same way as some of their Incan ancestors. It stretches 110 miles across and separates peru from Bolivia and some who live here have reported extraterrestrial encounters with UFO’s. Local legends talk about a lost underwater city and recently underwater archaeologists found stones that appear to create what looks like a road. Some of the stones found here, resemble an wonder of the ancient world known as Tiwanaku. What other mysteries lie below the surface of the water? 2. Exploding Lakes of Africa Some lakes in central africa have far higher CO2 levels that other places which can suddenly erupt under certain circumstances. Such a lake is known as Lake Nyos in Cameroon where sudden explosions have been known to devastate the local population. In 1986, one spontaneous explosion killed nearly 2000 people and 3500 livestock. Lake Kivu is the third most explosive lake, located in the country of Rwanda and it certainly has the potential to be deadly since a large amount of people live nearby. Some of them are trying to extract the flammable gas in a risky process known as catalyst scrubbing. 1.Pink Lake Australia Despite it being fairly well-known this bright pink lake has to be the strangest lake in the world hands down, even if there’s isn’t aliens hiding out here. Located in Western Australia, it’s also known as Lake Hillier, and every day of the year, it’s a solid bubblegum pink color. The lake is about 1900 feet wide and completely surrounded by eucalyptus trees and a small sand dune. No one understands completely how it manages to stay pink but some scientists believe that its a unique dye created from bacteria that feed off salt. In case you were wondering, it is safe to swim here. The guy that first took a dip must have been pretty brave! The best way to view this lake is from the sky. -

The world's largest crude oil transporter has a secret buried deep in the Great Lakes—two aging oil pipelines that transport 23 million gallons of crude oil through the largest body of fresh water on earth. Enbridge, the company that operates the pipelines, insists that the two 20-inch pipelines stretching across the Straits of Mackinac could last indefinitely. But one look at the company’s environmental record tells another story: Enbridge had more than 800 spills in North America between 1999 and 2010, dumping nearly 6.8 million gallons of oil. The largest spill released one million gallons of oil into the Kalamazoo River, only a few hours drive away from the Mackinac Straits. Activists and advocates have independently verified that parts of the pipeline—built in 1953—are sitting unsupported on the bottom of the lake and in major need of repair. Motherboard travels to Michigan—oil spill central—to investigate the threats of crude oil being transported through one of the largest freshwater ecosystems in the world by a company with one of the most egregious environmental records. From a monster lurking in a Russian lake, to new life forms discovered in Antarctica, these are “11 of the World’s Most Mysterious Lakes!” 6. Lake Nyos (nie-ohs) This crater lake is located in Cameroon, on the flank of an inactive volcano … and it’s not a lake you’d want to swim in. There’s a pocket of magma underneath the lake that leaks carbon dioxide … which turns the water into carbonic acid. It’s one of only three such lakes known to be saturated with carbon dioxide in such a manner. Some 1,700 people were suffocated in nearby towns when the lake suddenly emitted a huge cloud of carbon dioxide in 1986. The event was the result of a landslide … and was thought to be the first known mass asphyxiation caused by a naturally occurring circumstance. 5. Abraham Lake in Canada’s Banff (banth) National Park is actually an artificial body of water. It was created in 1972 with the construction of the Bighorn Dam. But this lake, along with two others in the park has become known for a naturally occurring phenomenon. Frozen bubbles of methane gas appear like icy circles trapped within the frozen lake. In the summer, the methane bubbles rise to the surface and pop. In the winter, the gas bubbles stay frozen within the ice as they travel to the surface. When permafrost thaws out, it causes organic matter at the bottom of the lake to do likewise. As microbes decompose the organic matter, methane is released. Since methane isn’t soluble, it forms into bubbles instead. 4. Loch Ness It’s a deep freshwater lake (or loch) in the Scottish highlands … and by surface area, it’s the second-largest loch in Scotland. And it’s also home to what is arguably the most famous cryptid in the world, the Loch Ness Monster. Sightings of Nessie date all the way back to 565 AD. In 2014 an expedition at Loch Ness had a large image deep below the surface register on their sonar. That followed the release of satellite images that seemed to depict a shadowy figure that measured around 30 feet long and had huge flippers. 3. Lake Baikal (bake-ul) Located in southern Siberia, it’s known as the world’s deepest lake at more than 1,600 meters. And at some 25 million years old, it’s also the considered the world’s oldest lake! It exhibits a rich biodiversity, with over 1,000 species of plants and more than 2,500 animal species. Due to extreme conditions, ice hummocks, or naturally formed blocks of ice have developed. Some of the ice blocks appear to have been carved by hand … and when they catch the sun at a certain angle, the ice seems to glow with a turquoise color. In 2009, Lake Baikal presented a mystery that still hasn’t been solved. Two enormous ice circles, each measuring some 2.5 miles wide appeared on the frozen lake! 2. Lake Vostok (vah-stock) It is actually located underneath the Antarctic ice at the southern Pole of Cold, beneath Russia’s Vostok Station. The surface of the subglacial freshwater lake is more than 13,000 ft (4,000 meters) below the ice. It’s thought that the lake’s water may have been isolated for up to 25 million years Pristine water samples obtained from the lake contained bacterial DNA that doesn’t match any known species listed in current global databases. Experts consider the bacterial life form to be unclassified or unidentified. The lake was discovered in 1996 by Russian and British specialists, and is one of the world’s largest lakes. Because it’s been sealed off for so long, the it could offer a glimpse of Earth prior to the Ice Age … and possibly provide clues to life on other worlds! 1. Stories of a monster lurking in Russia’s Lake Labynkyr (la-bink-EAR) date back to the 19th century. The remote lake is located in the Sakha Republic … the coldest and largest area of Russia. A team of divers undertook an expedition to not only conduct research on the lake … but also to see if legends about the monster might be true. Speculation about the creature includes it being anything from a giant pike to a prehistoric ichthyosaur (ick-thee-o-sore). At first the team encountered dogfish, which measured over a meter long. But on the fifth days of the expedition, their echo sounding device detected a huge object underneath their boat. The scientists were unable to identify what that object was, and have no explanation for it. They do know the object was dense, and it was located above the bottom of the lake … and it wasn’t a school of fish. When the readings were repeated, that suggested the presence of more than one large object inhabiting the lake. Is it proof that the legendary lake monsters really do exist? This lake is found in Napa County, California where some of the best wines in the US are made. The diameter of the who reaches 72 feet and it drops an insane 280 feet! This was constructed in order to keep the artificial lake from overflowing, keeping it from flooding nearby streets. It helps control how deep the rest of the lake gets and it only really gets put to use when there’s too much water. Here in this photo you can see what the structure actually looks like when it’s not submerged underwater.

This fascinating lake is found in British Columbia, Canada and is mysteriously spotted almost like a dalmation. This is from a complex mix of minerals deposited here such as calcium, magnesium sulfate, and sodium sulphates. Strangely enough, it also contains small amounts of titanium and silver. This was originally known to the native people and they referred to it as the Kliluk. They felt as though it was a sacred site. They felt as though the waters were therapeutic and had healing qualities to it. During world War I it was used by the allies to gather minerals that would be used in producing ammunition. It was later purchased by the native people and now you can take a look at it from behind a fence. Or maybe they’re using it to manufacture weapons.

Located in the Peruvian Andes,you might come across some llamas but also one of the most mysterious lakes in the world. Many people are unable to even come here and report severe altitude sickness. It’s found 13,000 feet above sea level making it the highest navigable lake and the people that inhabit this lake build floating islands out of reeds. They live somewhat of a simple lifestyle, the same way as some of their Incan ancestors. It stretches 110 miles across and separates peru from Bolivia and some who live here have reported extraterrestrial encounters with UFO’s. Local legends talk about a lost underwater city and recently underwater archaeologists found stones that appear to create what looks like a road. Some of the stones found here, resemble an wonder of the ancient world known as Tiwanaku. What other mysteries lie below the surface of the water?

Such a lake is known as Lake Nyos in Cameroon where sudden explosions have been known to devastate the local population. In 1986, one spontaneous explosion killed nearly 2000 people and 3500 livestock. Lake Kivu is the third most explosive lake, located in the country of Rwanda and it certainly has the potential to be deadly since a large amount of people live nearby. Some of them are trying to extract the flammable gas in a risky process known as catalyst scrubbing.

Despite it being fairly well-known this bright pink lake has to be the strangest lake in the world hands down, even if there’s isn’t aliens hiding out here. Located in Western Australia, it’s also known as Lake Hillier, and every day of the year, it’s a solid bubblegum pink color. The lake is about 1900 feet wide and completely surrounded by eucalyptus trees and a small sand dune. No one understands completely how it manages to stay pink but some scientists believe that its a unique dye created from bacteria that feed off salt. In case you were wondering, it is safe to swim here. The guy that first took a dip must have been pretty brave! The best way to view this lake is from the sky.

In 1986, one spontaneous explosion killed nearly 2000 people and 3500 livestock. Lake Kivu is the third most explosive lake, located in the country of Rwanda and it certainly has the potential to be deadly since a large amount of people live nearby. Some of them are trying to extract the flammable gas in a risky process known as catalyst scrubbing.

Despite it being fairly well-known this bright pink lake has to be the strangest lake in the world hands down, even if there’s isn’t aliens hiding out here. Located in Western Australia, it’s also known as Lake Hillier, and every day of the year, it’s a solid bubblegum pink color. The lake is about 1900 feet wide and completely surrounded by eucalyptus trees and a small sand dune. No one understands completely how it manages to stay pink but some scientists believe that its a unique dye created from bacteria that feed off salt. In case you were wondering, it is safe to swim here. The guy that first took a dip must have been pretty brave! The best way to view this lake is from the sky.

The world's largest crude oil transporter has a secret buried deep in the Great Lakes—two aging oil pipelines that transport 23 million gallons of crude oil through the largest body of fresh water on earth.
Enbridge, the company that operates the pipelines, insists that the two 20-inch pipelines stretching across the Straits of Mackinac could last indefinitely. But one look at the company’s environmental record tells another story: Enbridge had more than 800 spills in North America between 1999 and 2010, dumping nearly 6.8 million gallons of oil. The largest spill released one million gallons of oil into the Kalamazoo River, only a few hours drive away from the Mackinac Straits. Activists and advocates have independently verified that parts of the pipeline—built in 1953—are sitting unsupported on the bottom of the lake and in major need of repair.
Motherboard travels to Michigan—oil spill central—to investigate the threats of crude oil being transported through one of the largest freshwater ecosystems in the world by a company with one of the most egregious environmental records.

Lake Nyos (nie-ohs)
This crater lake is located in Cameroon, on the flank of an inactive volcano … and it’s not a lake you’d want to swim in. There’s a pocket of magma underneath the lake that leaks carbon dioxide … which turns the water into carbonic acid. It’s one of only three such lakes known to be saturated with carbon dioxide in such a manner. Some 1,700 people were suffocated in nearby towns when the lake suddenly emitted a huge cloud of carbon dioxide in 1986. The event was the result of a landslide … and was thought to be the first known mass asphyxiation caused by a naturally occurring circumstance.

Abraham Lake in Canada’s Banff (banth) National Park is actually an artificial body of water. It was created in 1972 with the construction of the Bighorn Dam. But this lake, along with two others in the park has become known for a naturally occurring phenomenon. Frozen bubbles of methane gas appear like icy circles trapped within the frozen lake. In the summer, the methane bubbles rise to the surface and pop. In the winter, the gas bubbles stay frozen within the ice as they travel to the surface. When permafrost thaws out, it causes organic matter at the bottom of the lake to do likewise. As microbes decompose the organic matter, methane is released. Since methane isn’t soluble, it forms into bubbles instead.

Loch Ness
It’s a deep freshwater lake (or loch) in the Scottish highlands … and by surface area, it’s the second-largest loch in Scotland. And it’s also home to what is arguably the most famous cryptid in the world, the Loch Ness Monster. Sightings of Nessie date all the way back to 565 AD. In 2014 an expedition at Loch Ness had a large image deep below the surface register on their sonar. That followed the release of satellite images that seemed to depict a shadowy figure that measured around 30 feet long and had huge flippers.

Lake Baikal (bake-ul)
Located in southern Siberia, it’s known as the world’s deepest lake at more than 1,600 meters. And at some 25 million years old, it’s also the considered the world’s oldest lake! It exhibits a rich biodiversity, with over 1,000 species of plants and more than 2,500 animal species. Due to extreme conditions, ice hummocks, or naturally formed blocks of ice have developed. Some of the ice blocks appear to have been carved by hand … and when they catch the sun at a certain angle, the ice seems to glow with a turquoise color. In 2009, Lake Baikal presented a mystery that still hasn’t been solved. Two enormous ice circles, each measuring some 2.5 miles wide appeared on the frozen lake!

Lake Vostok (vah-stock)
It is actually located underneath the Antarctic ice at the southern Pole of Cold, beneath Russia’s Vostok Station. The surface of the subglacial freshwater lake is more than 13,000 ft (4,000 meters) below the ice. It’s thought that the lake’s water may have been isolated for up to 25 million years Pristine water samples obtained from the lake contained bacterial DNA that doesn’t match any known species listed in current global databases. Experts consider the bacterial life form to be unclassified or unidentified. The lake was discovered in 1996 by Russian and British specialists, and is one of the world’s largest lakes. Because it’s been sealed off for so long, the it could offer a glimpse of Earth prior to the Ice Age … and possibly provide clues to life on other worlds!

Stories of a monster lurking in Russia’s Lake Labynkyr (la-bink-EAR) date back to the 19th century. The remote lake is located in the Sakha Republic … the coldest and largest area of Russia. A team of divers undertook an expedition to not only conduct research on the lake … but also to see if legends about the monster might be true. Speculation about the creature includes it being anything from a giant pike to a prehistoric ichthyosaur (ick-thee-o-sore). At first the team encountered dogfish, which measured over a meter long. But on the fifth days of the expedition, their echo sounding device detected a huge object underneath their boat. The scientists were unable to identify what that object was, and have no explanation for it. They do know the object was dense, and it was located above the bottom of the lake … and it wasn’t a school of fish. When the readings were repeated, that suggested the presence of more than one large object inhabiting the lake. Is it proof that the legendary lake monsters really do exist?

This crater lake is located in Cameroon, on the flank of an inactive volcano … and it’s not a lake you’d want to swim in. There’s a pocket of magma underneath the lake that leaks carbon dioxide … which turns the water into carbonic acid. It’s one of only three such lakes known to be saturated with carbon dioxide in such a manner. Some 1,700 people were suffocated in nearby towns when the lake suddenly emitted a huge cloud of carbon dioxide in 1986. The event was the result of a landslide … and was thought to be the first known mass asphyxiation caused by a naturally occurring circumstance.

Abraham Lake in Canada’s Banff (banth) National Park is actually an artificial body of water. It was created in 1972 with the construction of the Bighorn Dam. But this lake, along with two others in the park has become known for a naturally occurring phenomenon. Frozen bubbles of methane gas appear like icy circles trapped within the frozen lake. In the summer, the methane bubbles rise to the surface and pop. In the winter, the gas bubbles stay frozen within the ice as they travel to the surface. When permafrost thaws out, it causes organic matter at the bottom of the lake to do likewise. As microbes decompose the organic matter, methane is released. Since methane isn’t soluble, it forms into bubbles instead.

Loch Ness
It’s a deep freshwater lake (or loch) in the Scottish highlands … and by surface area, it’s the second-largest loch in Scotland. And it’s also home to what is arguably the most famous cryptid in the world, the Loch Ness Monster. Sightings of Nessie date all the way back to 565 AD. In 2014 an expedition at Loch Ness had a large image deep below the surface register on their sonar. That followed the release of satellite images that seemed to depict a shadowy figure that measured around 30 feet long and had huge flippers.

Lake Baikal (bake-ul)
Located in southern Siberia, it’s known as the world’s deepest lake at more than 1,600 meters. And at some 25 million years old, it’s also the considered the world’s oldest lake! It exhibits a rich biodiversity, with over 1,000 species of plants and more than 2,500 animal species. Due to extreme conditions, ice hummocks, or naturally formed blocks of ice have developed. Some of the ice blocks appear to have been carved by hand … and when they catch the sun at a certain angle, the ice seems to glow with a turquoise color. In 2009, Lake Baikal presented a mystery that still hasn’t been solved. Two enormous ice circles, each measuring some 2.5 miles wide appeared on the frozen lake!

Lake Vostok (vah-stock)
It is actually located underneath the Antarctic ice at the southern Pole of Cold, beneath Russia’s Vostok Station. The surface of the subglacial freshwater lake is more than 13,000 ft (4,000 meters) below the ice. It’s thought that the lake’s water may have been isolated for up to 25 million years Pristine water samples obtained from the lake contained bacterial DNA that doesn’t match any known species listed in current global databases. Experts consider the bacterial life form to be unclassified or unidentified. The lake was discovered in 1996 by Russian and British specialists, and is one of the world’s largest lakes. Because it’s been sealed off for so long, the it could offer a glimpse of Earth prior to the Ice Age … and possibly provide clues to life on other worlds!

Stories of a monster lurking in Russia’s Lake Labynkyr (la-bink-EAR) date back to the 19th century. The remote lake is located in the Sakha Republic … the coldest and largest area of Russia. A team of divers undertook an expedition to not only conduct research on the lake … but also to see if legends about the monster might be true. Speculation about the creature includes it being anything from a giant pike to a prehistoric ichthyosaur (ick-thee-o-sore). At first the team encountered dogfish, which measured over a meter long. But on the fifth days of the expedition, their echo sounding device detected a huge object underneath their boat. The scientists were unable to identify what that object was, and have no explanation for it. They do know the object was dense, and it was located above the bottom of the lake … and it wasn’t a school of fish. When the readings were repeated, that suggested the presence of more than one large object inhabiting the lake. Is it proof that the legendary lake monsters really do exist?

Although not new to time lapse, this video is my first larger scale time lapse compilation cut down to over 10k photo frames equaling 33 scenes of various night sky events from Northern Michigan 2012. It took a year to shoot in many cold nights and took a lot of coffee, a bit tenacity and persistence to get this into a form of coherent electrified cosmic goodness.
Night sky-capes include multiple northern lights scenes, meteor showers, nebulae, planets, including Venus and Jupiter setting from Spring 2012, constellations, the milky way, comet Pan-Starrs, night-scapes over both Lake Superior and Lake Michigan.
Thought I might mention some of the more interesting wildlife encounters during the photo gathering-
1.sparring moose on Isle Royale under a pitch black sky after wrapping the Isle Royale Tobin Harbor airglow / northern lights opening scene at 3am in the morning, with their thunderous antlers clashing with fear inducing power that could be felt in the knashing soundwaves echoing in the hills, (and I had to hike a two mile 'deer path' back to my shelter in the direction of those moose, I survived to tell the tale without getting pancaked)
2. the howl of wolves in the eastern UP piercing the freezing air under a calm full moon sky
3.a particularly persistent beaver on an inland lake in the Hiawatha National Forest, determined to be in just about every frame with a methodically spaced tail slap on an otherwise beautifully FLAT CALM star reflected lake- sooo even though the star reflection sequence is blown by this beaver with a 'tude, the scene is included anyway as a humorous memory
4. the blue heron fishing for a midnight snack by auroral light at the mouth of Sand River and Lake Superior- if only I would have not moved, this heron would have walked the river bank thru the entire frame..
Rare pairings caught on camera include ribbons of aurora above a full moon fogbow on the horizon of Lake Superior, the aurora and an isolated singular lightning storm cloud over Lake Superior, and the aurora and Milky Way in several scenes including Copper Harbor, Marquette, Isle Royale, Pictured Rocks, and Eagle Harbor Lighthouse.
There are also a couple sequences of rare magenta/red aurora that I will never tire of. 3:45, 4:26

I feel extremely fortunate to have witnessed and photographed the several strong auroral outbursts shown here from 2012 at a relatively southern 46.5 degrees latitude in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, and am so grateful for the advances in high iso dslr technology to allow for time-lapse capture to be able to create these sequences for such high quality video reproduction of the night sky.
All scenes are within 200 miles or so of my home in Marquette, Mi. and I feel very blessed to live where I do and to share the beauty that I see 'in my own backyard' with you. I hope it inspires others to take time to find the beauty that is everywhere around us and also to raise an awareness about the importance of preserving our night wondrous starlit skies.

6:03-full moon Fogbow over Lake Superior under northern lights

I feel extremely fortunate to have witnessed and photographed the several strong auroral outbursts shown here from 2012 at a relatively southern 46.5 degrees latitude in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, and am so grateful for the advances in high iso dslr technology to allow for time-lapse capture to be able to create these sequences for such high quality video reproduction of the night sky.
All scenes are within 200 miles or so of my home in Marquette, Mi. and I feel very blessed to live where I do and to share the beauty that I see 'in my own backyard' with you. I hope it inspires others to take time to find the beauty that is everywhere around us and also to raise an awareness about the importance of preserving our night wondrous starlit skies.

Where to begin on this one...wow. Jessica & Brandon are photographers from Windsor, Ontario, Canada (www.brandonscottphotography.com). They're already married. They contacted us to make a promotional video in our Engagement Film style that they could use to promote their photo business. We dig that 'cause there are no rules when it comes to making cool stuff and having fun with cool people. :)
So they flew in from Canada and met us at a remote location in the Sierra Mountains of California at June Lake. Talk about a rad spot! We had such an amazing time. Mountains, lakes, bonfires, canoes, torches, cliff dives...and the list goes on.
All three guys on our IRIS AND LIGHT crew made this one happen...lots of logistics and crazy shots to set up. We wanted to blow this one out of the water and we think we made a pretty solid film.
