Yoko Ono (小野 洋子, Ono Yōko, born 18 February 1933) is a Japanese multimedia artist, singer and peace activist who is also known for her work in performance art, music and filmmaking. She is the widow and second wife of singer-songwriter John Lennon.
Ono grew up in Tokyo, and studied at Gakushuin. She withdrew from her course after two years and rejoined her family in New York in 1953. She spent some time at Sarah Lawrence College, and then became involved in New York City's downtown artists scene, including the Fluxus group. She first met Lennon in 1966 at her own art exhibition in London, and they became a couple in 1968. Ono and Lennon famously used their honeymoon at the Hilton Amsterdam as a stage for public protests against the Vietnam War with their performance, Bed-Ins for Peace, in Amsterdam and Montreal in 1969. She brought feminism to the forefront in her music, influencing artists as diverse as the B-52s and Meredith Monk. Ono achieved commercial and critical acclaim in 1980 with the chart-topping album Double Fantasy, released with Lennon three weeks before his death.

John Winston Ono Lennon, MBE (born John Winston Lennon; 9 October 1940 – 8 December 1980) was an English singer and songwriter who rose to worldwide fame as a co-founder of the band the Beatles, the most commercially successful band in the history of popular music. With fellow member Paul McCartney, he formed a celebrated songwriting partnership.
Born and raised in Liverpool, Lennon became involved in the skiffle craze as a teenager; his first band, the Quarrymen, evolved into the Beatles in 1960. When the group disbanded in 1970, Lennon embarked on a solo career that produced the critically acclaimed albums John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band and Imagine, and iconic songs such as "Give Peace a Chance", "Working Class Hero", and "Imagine". After his marriage to Yoko Ono in 1969, he changed his name to John Ono Lennon. Lennon disengaged himself from the music business in 1975 to raise his infant son Sean, but re-emerged with Ono in 1980 with the new album Double Fantasy. He was murdered three weeks after its release.

It featured a number of popular musical acts from the 1950s and 1960s, including Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis, Fats Domino, Bo Diddley, and Gene Vincent and also booked more modern acts such as Alice Cooper, Chicago Transit Authority and The Doors. Toronto rock promoters John Brower and Kenny Walker contacted John Lennon to see if he would be willing to be the master of ceremonies. Lennon responded that if he came over at all, it would be to play, "only if you let me bring my new band so we can...
On 30 August 1972, John Lennon and Yoko Ono performed two shows at the Madison Square Garden in New York City, one in the afternoon and one in the evening, to raise money for children with mental challenges at friend Geraldo Rivera's request. This concert was John and Yoko's last full-length concert performance together, coming right after the release of "Some Time in New York City", which was a commercial failure in the United States. Backing John and Yoko were Elephant's Memory, who had served as John and Yoko's backing band on "Some Time in New York City". The benefit concerts, billed as One to One, also featured other performers in addition to Lennon, including Stevie Wonder, Roberta Flack, Melanie Safka and Sha-Na-Na. John Lennon and Yoko Ono staged a Bed In for Peace at Montreal's Queen Elizabeth Hotel in Room 1742. The couple held the event - from May 25 to June 1, 1969 - to protest civil unrest and the U.S. involvement in the Vietnam war. "We're going to sell peace the way other people sell soap", Lennon told a young photo-journalist Gerry Deiter. Assigned by Life Magazine to document the happening in the hotel suite, Deiter was the only photographer there the entire eight days. He captured hundreds of images of the couple singing, composing, visiting with friends and talking to the media. John and Yoko spoke to some 150 journalists during the press conferences they held daily from their bed. June 1 was the culmination - the recording of Give Peace A Chance. Now these images come together in the bo...

4min excerpt from 90min live performance KINGS ARI, Melbourne, Australia April 2012 In her 1976 essay Video: The Aesthetics of Narcissism, Rosalind Krauss ponders the self-love she saw as inherent within the then-newborn medium of video. Albrecht Durer’s first self-portraits were made in the 15th century – before and since, artists have exploited their own image for centuries. 40 years beyond the first seminal performance works recorded on video by the likes of Joseph Beuys, Marina Abramovic, VALIE EXPORT and Yoko Ono, we are living in a different age where anyone with a webcam can YouTube their individual brand of ‘Broadcast Yourself’ narcissism. Narcisuss reflects and expands the medium of video, before and now: the ultimate mirror-medium. The inspirational "text" for this piece was Ma...

May 12th, 1972 John and Yoko talk with and perform for Dick and Shirley McClaine. John defends his use of the word "nigger" for his song "woman is the nigger of the world", in addition to explaining his deportation and custody dilemma. Shirley McLaine talks out of ass for most of the show, watch her repeatedly praise John and Yoko off camera and be politely dismissed. While being interviewed, she states she has no belief in spirits and paranormal things--which she must have forgotten later in career when she started selling that nonsense. Shirley also demonstrates the lost art of the uncomfortably long hug with Yoko.

Approximately Infinite Universe is a double album by Yoko Ono, released in early 1973. It represents a departure from the experimental avant garde rock of her first two albums towards a more conventional pop/rock sound, while also dabbling in feminist rock.

"The incredible changes that you go through, is life. Life is complex, confusing. The sky is very permanent, not changing." Interview with artist Yoko Ono about how life and art are connected in her work, which she sees as a means for simplifying things. Yoko Ono talks of her performance Sky Piece to Jesus Christ (1965), her interest in music, her use of her voice, as well as more generally about her ideas and working methods. "I just wanted to clear the air" she says of her screaming. She also talks of the relationship between body and mind, and how the body is a kind of material, you can work with. Her interest is mainly the spirit, or concept of things: "We're all together in a thing called life. It's really great. And it's very interesting, because the wind is blowing, the weather, th...

Bed Peace - Bed In Documentary Starring John Lennon & Yoko Ono ALL WE ARE SAYING GIVE PEACE A CHANCE! Julian Assange: "...there is no freedom if there is no freedom of speech, freedom of information..." Slavoi Zizek: "Money? For what we need money for? Who says we need it at all?"
In this video recorded at the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, Yoko Ono's legendary performance 'Sky Piece to Jesus Christ' is followed by the artist doing her 'Action Piece' painting, clearing the air in a scream and then introducing a 'Promise Piece'. In 'Sky Piece to Jesus Christ' (1965) the members of a chamber orchestra are wrapped in gauze bandages, while playing Charles Gounod's 'Petite Symphonie' from 1885. Yoko Ono views the sky as the epitome of freedom in contrast to the inner and outer bonds visualized during the performance. The performance is further explained in the related video interview 'A Thing Called Life'. Japanese-American avant-garde artist Yoko Ono was born in Tokyo in 1933, but moved to New York when she was 18, later becoming one of the most important representat...
