The Fall of General Electric
GE, the legendary bellwether American company, was founded by Thomas Edison in 1889. It was an original Dow Jones Industrial Average component, which represents the 30 largest stocks in the U.S. GE stayed on the Dow Jones from the early 1900’s until 2018 when it was abruptly removed.
GE was always a large company, but Jack Welch who took over in 1981 brought General Electric into the stratosphere; he led GE from being the 9th largest company to the largest by the year 2000.
Jeff Immelt took over in 2001—and had big shoes to fill. Early on, Immelt was a competent CEO, but over time he made a number of mistakes that cumulated to ruin GE’s once mythic image when it needed a bailout of sorts (from Buffett and sort of by the FDIC) during the financial crisis of 2008.

After the financial crisis, with GE’s mythic image in a state of disrepair, Immelt tried to rebuild the company and made 4 key mistakes:
1) He sold NBC at a discounted price.
2) He heavily invested in oil companies
3) He sold the profitable GE Capital business at a large loss
4) He purchased Alstom a French Power company.
Each of these decisions led to turmoil. In 2015, Immelt said GE would earn $2 in 2018. However, in 2018, GE lost money. In 2017, Immelt left the company, but GE’s new CEO John Flannery would last only a year—he was fired in 2018. Lawrence Culp, the former CEO of Danaher, took over in late 2018. He forecasted GE’s EPS to be less than 70 cents in 2019. Oh, how the might have fallen!
GE is the tale of a CEO (Jeff Immelt) whose biggest mistake was listening to shareholders.

General Electric on Wednesday said it reached a deal to combine its jet-leasing business with rival AerCap in a deal valued at $30 billion, a move that would create a massive lessor as the aviation industry struggles through the Covid-19 pandemic and GE moves to reduce its debt load. CNBC's David Faber breaks down his conversation with CEO Larry Culp Wednesday morning about the deal. For access to live and exclusive video from CNBC subscribe to CNBC PRO: https://cnb.cx/2NGeIvi
General Electric on Wednesday said it will sell its jet leasing business to rival AerCap in a deal valued at $30 billion, a move that would create a massive lessor as the aviation industry struggles through the Covid-19 pandemic and GE moves to reduce its debt load.
The deal would give GE a 46% stake in the combined company and generate about $24 billion in cash. GE Capital Aviation Services, or Gecas, is a part of GE Capital, which has been whittled down since the financial crisis. When the deal closes, which GE expects to take nine to 12 months, GE Capital will be folded into the larger corporate structure, no longer broken out as a separate unit in financial reports.
GE said it would reduce its debt by about $30 billion after the transaction closes using proceeds from the deal and existing cash.
GE shares were down 5% in morning trading while AerCap’s were off 2% after the deal was announced.
″This is the right time to further accelerate our transformation,” GE CEO Larry Culp said in a news release accouncing the deal. “This action will enable us to significantly de-risk GE and continue on our path to being a well-capitalized company.
Both companies are large customers of both Boeing and rival Airbus. A combination of the two into what analysts describe as the world’s largest aircraft lessor will give them the ability to press for better aircraft prices, just as Boeing and Airbus are trying to find their footing in the pandemic.
Aircraft leasing companies hold about half of the more than 22,000 single- and twin-aisle commercial jetliners, according to consulting firm Ascend by Cirium.
“They will have a lot of negotiating power,” said Eric Bernardini, co-head of the aerospace, defense and aviation practice at consulting firm AlixPartners.
Culp told analysts Wednesday that he expects the aviation industry’s rebound to boost the value of its proposed equity stake.
“As the industry recovers that equity stake that we have in the combined business undoubtedly will be worth more than it is today,” Culp said. “We would have never sold Gecas for cash at his point in the cycle. Fortunately, that’s really not what we’re doing today. We’re putting GE together with an important partner, creating, I think, more value for the GE shareholder over time.”
Gecas is closely intertwined with GE’s massive aircraft engine business as the leasing company often finances and rents aircraft outfitted with GE engines that the company later services.
Gecas’ owned, serviced or ordered aircraft top 1,600, and it had assets worth $35.86 billion as of the end of 2020. AerCap owned, managed or had on order some 1,330 aircraft at the end of last year with assets of assets worth $42 billion, according to regulatory filings.

Digraph (orthography)
A digraph or digram from the Greek: δίς dís, "double" and γράφω gráphō, "to write" is a pair of characters used in the orthography of a language to write either a single phoneme distinct sound, or a sequence of phonemes that does not correspond to the normal values of the two characters combined
Digraphs are often used for phonemes that cannot be represented using a single character, like the English sh in ship and fish In other cases they may be relics from an earlier period of the language when they had a different pronunciation, or represent a distinction which is made only in certain dialects, like English wh They may also be used for purely etymological reasons, like rh in English Digraphs are used in some Romanization schemes, like the zh often used to represent...

Alphabet
An alphabet is a standard set of letters (basic written symbols or graphemes) that represent the phonemes (basic significant sounds) of any spoken language it is used to write. This is in contrast to other types of writing systems, such as syllabaries (in which each character represents a syllable) and logographic systems (in which each character represents a word, morpheme, or semantic unit).
The first fully phonemic script, the Proto-Canaanite script, later known as the Phoenician alphabet, is considered to be the first alphabet, and is the ancestor of most modern alphabets, including Arabic, Greek, Latin, Cyrillic, Hebrew, and possibly Brahmic. In some languages orthographies, digraphs and occasionally trigraphs are considered individual letters, meaning that tdigraph orthography meaning, digraph definition, digraph ch, digraph worksheets Digraph (orthography)

Latin script
Listening is a more natural way of learning, when compared to reading. Written language only began at around 3200 BC, but spoken language has existed long ago.
Learning by listening is a great way to:
- increases imagination and understanding
- improves your listening skills
- improves your own spoken accent
- learn while on the move
- reduce eye strain
Now learn the vast amount of general knowledge available on Wikipedia through audio (audio article). You could even learn subconsciously by playing the audio while you are sleeping! SUMMARY
=======
Latin or Roman script is a set of graphic signs (script) based on the letters of the classical Latin alphabet. This is derived from a form of the Cumaean Greek version of the Greek alphabet used by the Etruscans.
Several Latin-script alphabets exist, which differ in graphemes, collation, and phonetic values from the classical Latin alphabet.
The Latin script is the basis of the International Phonetic Alphabet, and the 26 most widespread letters are the letters contained in the ISO basic Latin alphabet.
Latin script is the basis for the largest number of alphabets of any writing system and is the
most widely adopted writing system in the world (commonly used by about 70 per cent of the world's population). Latin script is used as the standard method of writing in most Western, Central, as well as in some Eastern European languages, as well as in many languages in other parts of the world.

Peter T. Daniels, however, distinguishes an abugida or alphasyllabary, a set of graphemes that represent consonantal base letters which diacritics modify to represent vowels (as in Devanagari and other South Asian scripts), an abjad, in which letters predominantly or exclusively represent consonants (as in the original Phoenician, Hebrew or Arabic), and an "alphabet," a set of graphemes that represent both vowels and consonants. In this narrow sense of the word the first "true" alphabet was the Greek alphabet, which was developed on the basis of the earlier Phoenician alphabet.
Of the dozens of alphabets in use today, the most popular is the Latin alphabet, which was derived from the Greek, and which many languages modify by adding letters formed using diacritical marks. While most alphabets have letters composed of lines (linear writing), there are also exceptions such as the alphabets used in Braille. The Khmer alphabet (for Cambodian) is the longest, with 74 letters.
Alphabets are usually associated with a standard ordering of letters. This makes them useful for purposes of collation, specifically by allowing words to be sorted in alphabetical order. It also means that their letters can be used as an alternative method of "numbering" ordered items, in such contexts as numbered lists and number placements.
The English word "alphabet" came into Middle English from the Late Latin word "alphabetum", which in turn originated in the Greek ἀλφάβητος ("alphabētos"). The Greek word was made from the first two letters, "alpha"(α) and "beta"(β). The names for the Greek letters came from the first two letters of the Phoenician alphabet; "aleph", which also meant "ox", and "bet", which also meant "house".
Sometimes, like in the alphabet song in English, the term "ABCs" is used instead of the word "alphabet" ("Now I know my ABCs"...). "Knowing one's ABCs", in general, can be used as a metaphor for knowing the basics about anything.
The history of the alphabet started in ancient Egypt. Egyptian writing had a set of some 24 hieroglyphs that are called uniliterals, to represent syllables that begin with a single consonant of their language, plus a vowel (or no vowel) to be supplied by the native speaker. These glyphs were used as pronunciation guides for logograms, to write grammatical inflections, and, later, to transcribe loan words and foreign names.
In the Middle Bronze Age, an apparently "alphabetic" system known as the Proto-Sinaitic script appears in Egyptian turquoise mines in the Sinai peninsula dated to circa the 15th century BC, apparently left by Canaanite workers. In 1999, John and Deborah Darnell discovered an even earlier version of this first alphabet at Wadi el-Hol dated to circa 1800 BC and show...
