Martin Denny (April 10, 1911 ‒ March 2, 2005) was an American piano-player and composer best known as the "father of exotica." In a long career that saw him performing well into the 1980s, he toured the world popularizing his brand of lounge music which included exotic percussion, imaginative rearrangements of popular songs, and original songs that celebrated Tiki culture.
Denny was born in New York City and raised in Los Angeles, California. He studied classical piano and at a young age toured South America for four and a half years in the 1930s with the Don Dean Orchestra. This tour began Denny's fascination with Latin rhythms. Denny collected a large number of ethnic instruments from all over the world, which he used to spice up his stage performances.
After serving in the United States Army Air Forces in World War II, Denny returned to Los Angeles, California, in 1945 where he studied piano and composition under Dr. Wesley La Violette and orchestration under Arthur Lange at the Los Angeles Conservatory of Music. He later studied at the University of Southern California.
"Quiet Village" is an orchestral pop instrumental that was written and originally performed by Les Baxter in 1951. In the liner notes to his album, Ritual of the Savage (Le sacre du sauvage), Baxter described the themes he was conveying in the work:
In 1957, Martin Denny released a cover of the song featuring exotic instruments and sounds that made it to number four on the pop singles chart on June 1, 1959 and number eleven on the R&B chart. Denny also recorded a stereo version of the song in 1959, a bossa nova version in 1964, and a version performed on a Moog synthesizer in 1969.
In 1977, The Ritchie Family recorded a disco version and added vocals. The single was included on their African Queens album. Along with the album's title track and "Summer Dance", "Quiet Village" hit number one for three weeks in 1977. However, unlike the Martin Denny version, The Ritchie Family recording did not chart on the pop singles chart. It did peak at #68 on the R&B singles chart.

Liberty Records was a United States-based record label. It was started by chairman Simon Waronker in 1955 with Al Bennett as president and Theodore Keep as chief engineer. It was reactivated in 2001 in the United Kingdom and had two previous revivals.
Liberty's early releases focused on film and orchestral music. Its first single was Lionel Newman's "The Girl Upstairs." Its first big hit, in 1955, was by Julie London singing her version of the torch song, "Cry Me a River", which climbed to #9 in the Billboard Hot 100. It helped Liberty sell her first album, Julie Is Her Name. She was to record 32 albums in her career.
In 1956, Liberty signed the little-known Henry Mancini. They released two singles and several albums for him, but he left in 1959 when he gained in popularity. Billy Rose and Lee David's song, "Tonight You Belong to Me", scored a number 4 (US) and number 28 (UK) as performed by teen sisters Patience and Prudence (McIntyre), selling over a million copies. (It was first recorded in 1927, revived by Frankie Laine in 1952.)
Hong Kong (香港; "Fragrant Harbour"), officially Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China, is an autonomous territory on the southern coast of China at the Pearl River Estuary and the South China Sea. Hong Kong is known for its skyline and deep natural harbour. It has a land area of 1104 km2 and shares its northern border with Guangdong Province of Mainland China. With around 7.2 million inhabitants of various nationalities, Hong Kong is one of the world's most densely populated metropolises.
After the First Opium War (1839–42), Hong Kong became a British colony with the perpetual cession of Hong Kong Island, followed by Kowloon Peninsula in 1860 and a 99-year lease of the New Territories from 1898. Hong Kong remained under British control for about a century until the Second World War, when Japan occupied the colony from December 1941 to August 1945. After the Surrender of Japan, the British resumed control. In the 1980s, negotiations between the United Kingdom and the China resulted in the 1984 Sino-British Joint Declaration, which provided for the transfer of sovereignty of Hong Kong on 30 June 1997. The territory became a special administrative region of China with a high degree of autonomy on 1 July 1997 under the principle of one country, two systems. Disputes over the perceived misapplication of this principle have contributed to popular protests, including the 2014 Umbrella Revolution.

Go ahead and laugh at the bird noises. That's part of the fun, and why the band members did it to begin with. My favorite part is the transition into "Voodoo Love" at 2:55. Aufzeichnung bei "TuS meets Schlager" in Oberhausen-Buschhausen vom 18.12.2016
U.K tv documentary looking at the explosion of "Tiki Culture" & Exotica in 1950s American pop culture. It contains a short segment on Martin Denny & Exotica music. It also looks at how this style influenced arts, design, leisure, architecture etc, as well as a look inside a huge Tiki theme park built near Los Angeles in the 1980s. This was aired circa 1999 as part of Channel 4's "Without Walls" series.
You are getting very sleepy. Very, very sleepy. Your eyes are tired, so tired. Your eyes are closing. You are falling into a deep sleep. Go to sleep. That's right, sleep.
From a longer interview with my father about his life, remembering Martin Denny performances in Oahu in the late 1950s.
A very hip song to cool off to. The birth of Chill.

NO COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT INTENDED - (Liberty LP 7207) Out of Los Angeles, this track from the 1961 Liberty LP entitled, 'Romantica' was one of twelve cuts that showcased Martin Denny's trademark 'Exotic' instrumental sound with the added musical component of lush strings. The combination works quite well as every track on the LP is just as good as the next.
