Every day people all around the world go through their daily routines without encountering many problems. We wear a wide range of clothes, watch pretty much anything we want on TV or the internet and drink and eat an equally wide range of products. We call friends and family all around the world and even visit popular tourist sites – all without a second thought. For most of us, this isn’t a big deal – so why are we talking about it now? Well, in North Korea things are a bit different. Actually, they are a lot different in this secretive and authoritarian state.

North Korea’s hair-brained leader, Kim Jong-Un, brought in one of the strangest laws ever. He decreed that there are only 28 government approved hair styles that men and women can get.
To be specific, there are 10 for men and 18 for women. Strangely though, the lardy leader’s own unique slicked back style isn’t on the list, which just seems unfair.
Spiked hair is explicitly banned, presumably because it’s rebellious, or maybe hair wax is just rare in the despotic North.According to North Korean defectors, Kim Jong-Un likes to blur the lines between fiction and reality, implementing some strange Sci-Fi vetting process for the capital city.
Basically, if you want to live in Pyongyang and don’t have express permission from the government, then you’re out of luck.
The city is apparently reserved for the most successful, and more importantly loyal, people. Which isn’t surprising when you consider housing assignments are decided by the government.
It’s kind of like The Capital in the Hunger Games but without the bloodsport… we hope.Somewhat shockingly, elections are held every five years in North Korea – it is the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea after all.

North Korea is ruled by an oppressive and often violent communist regime. The region is best known for countless human rights violations, a brutal response to any dissidents of the reigning Kim Jong-un-led government, extremely restrictive conditions and a dramatic disparity between the wealthy elite class and the impoverished majority of citizens. This identity lives on through those who were able to successfully evacuate the country and through international experts, most of whom have limited access thanks to a rigid foreign policy that allows these atrocities to continue through their relative isolation.
Yet, many people view North Korea as a strange, perplexing and often ludicrous curiosity, reacting to the mysterious dictatorship more with bemusement than outrage. And surely enough, the comic material is plentiful. The deluded Jong-un is an unknown entity with an oddball haircut and his deceased father Kim Jong-Il was an embellishment-prone narcissist, having been known to claim he was a world-class golfer and a global fashion icon. Through its dictatorial regime, the country has set overbearing and often hypocritical rules to lord over its citizens, typically enforced in a harsh, aggressive manner.
Fascination and amusement at the expense of what is known as the Hermit State has even extended into pop culture. 30 Rock satirized Jong-Il’s penchant for exaggerating – or outright making up - his own achievements and the ‘truths’ of the country’s state-run media. The Interview depicted Seth Rogen and James Franco embarking upon a mission to assassinate Jong-un but never reached theaters partially in response to alleged threats by North Korea. The weirdness reached new heights when NBA star and noted eccentric Dennis Rodman formed a friendship with Jong-un and even paid a few visits to the difficult-to-access nation.
Indeed, separating fact from fiction in North Korea is not easy to do. The shrouded-in-mystery state offers plenty of misinformation through its state-run media and allows for precious few outsiders to provide an unbiased perspective, thanks to an effort by the isolated country’s leaders to block information from entering or exiting the country. Instead, we are left with unsubstantiated but oft-repeated rumors, like Jong-un feeding his uncle, Jang Song Thaek, to 120 starving dogs.
Thus, any examination of North Korea can only be facilitated through piecing together various bits of factual information that emerge occasionally from the country. Reports from international human rights organizations like the United Nations, infrequent accounts from international news outlets and a scattering of stories from those who have successfully left the country have helped form a rough idea of how the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) operates. It is through these narratives and perspectives that a basic understanding of North Korea is formed. With that in mind, let’s take a glimpse inside this confounding place and examine some of the craziest-but-true facts about it.

The name Korea is derived from the Kingdom of Goguryeo, also spelled as Koryŏ. The capital and largest city is Pyongyang. North Korea shares a land border with China to the north and northwest, along the Amnok (Yalu) and Tumen rivers, and a small section of the Tumen River also forms a border with Russia to the northeast. The Korean Demilitarized Zone marks the boundary between North Korea and South Korea.
Korea was annexed by the Empire of Japan in 1910. After the Japanese surrender at the end of World War II in 1945, Korea was divided into two zones by the United States and the Soviet Union, with the north occupied by the Soviets and the south by the Americans. Negotiations on reunification failed, and in 1948 two separate governments were formed: the Democratic People's Republic of Korea in the north, and the Republic of Korea in the south. An invasion initiated by North Korea led to the Korean War (1950–53). Although the Korean Armistice Agreement brought about a ceasefire, no official peace treaty was ever signed. Both states were accepted into the United Nations in 1991.

Korea, called Chosŏn (Korean: 조선; Hanja: 朝鮮) in North Korea and Hanguk (Korean: 한국; Hanja: 韓國) or Daehanminkuk (Korean: 대한민국; Hanja: 大韓民國) in South Korea, is an East Asian territory that is divided into two distinct sovereign states: North Korea, formally the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), and South Korea, formally the Republic of Korea (ROK). Located on the Korean Peninsula, Korea is bordered by China to the northwest and Russia to the northeast. It is separated from Japan to the east by the Korea Strait and the Sea of Japan .
Korea emerged as a singular political entity after centuries of conflict among the Three Kingdoms of Korea, which were unified as Silla (57 BC – AD 935) and Balhae (AD 698 – 926). The united Silla was eventually succeeded by Goryeo in 935 at the end of the Later Three Kingdoms period. Goryeo, which gave name to the modern exonym "Korea", was a highly cultured state and created the Jikji in the 14th century. The invasions by the Mongol Empire in the 13th century, however, greatly weakened the nation, which forced it into vassalage. After the Yuan dynasty's collapse, severe political strife followed. Goryeo eventually fell to an uprising led by General Yi Seong-gye, who established Joseon in 1388.

Etymology
The word north is related to the Old High German nord, both descending from the Proto-Indo-European unit ner-, meaning "down" (or "under"). (Presumably a natural primitive description of its concept is "to the left of the rising sun".)
The Latin word borealis comes from the Greek boreas "north wind, north", which, according to Ovid, was personified as the son of the river-god Strymon, the father of Calais and Zetes. Septentrionalis is from septentriones, "the seven plow oxen", a name of Ursa Maior. The Greek arktikos is named for the same constellation, and is the derivation of the English word "Arctic".
Other languages have sometimes more interesting derivations. For example, in Lezgian, kefer can mean both 'disbelief' and 'north', since to the north of the Muslim Lezgian homeland there are areas formerly inhabited by non-Muslim Caucasian and Turkic peoples. In many languages of Mesoamerica, "north" also means "up". In Hungarian the word for north is észak, which is derived from éjszaka ("night"), since above the Tropic of Cancer, the Sun never shines from the north.

Through its dictatorial regime, the country has set overbearing and often hypocritical rules to lord over its citizens, typically enforced in a harsh, aggressive manner. Fascination and amusement at the expense of what is known as the Hermit State has even extended into pop culture. 30 Rock satirized Jong-Il’s penchant for exaggerating – or outright making up - his own achievements and the ‘truths’ of the country’s state-run media. The Interview depicted Seth Rogen and James Franco embarking upon a mission to assassinate Jong-un but never reached theaters partially in response to alleged threats by North Korea. The weirdness reached new heights when NBA star and noted eccentric Dennis Rodman formed a friendship with Jong-un and even paid a few visits to the difficult-to-access nation. Indeed, separating fact from fiction in North Korea is not easy to do. The shrouded-in-mystery state offers plenty of misinformation through its state-run media and allows for precious few outsiders to provide an unbiased perspective, thanks to an effort by the isolated country’s leaders to block information from entering or exiting the country. Instead, we are left with unsubstantiated but oft-repeated rumors, like Jong-un feeding his uncle, Jang Song Thaek, to 120 starving dogs. Thus, any examination of North Korea can only be facilitated through piecing together various bits of factual information that emerge occasionally from the country. Reports from international human rights organizations like the United Nations, infrequent accounts from international news outlets and a scattering of stories from those who have successfully left the country have helped form a rough idea of how the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) operates. It is through these narratives and perspectives that a basic understanding of North Korea is formed. With that in mind, let’s take a glimpse inside this confounding place and examine some of the craziest-but-true facts about it. Through its dictatorial regime, the country has set overbearing and often hypocritical rules to lord over its citizens, typically enforced in a harsh, aggressive manner.
Fascination and amusement at the expense of what is known as the Hermit State has even extended into pop culture. 30 Rock satirized Jong-Il’s penchant for exaggerating – or outright making up - his own achievements and the ‘truths’ of the country’s state-run media. The Interview depicted Seth Rogen and James Franco embarking upon a mission to assassinate Jong-un but never reached theaters partially in response to alleged threats by North Korea. The weirdness reached new heights when NBA star and noted eccentric Dennis Rodman formed a friendship with Jong-un and even paid a few visits to the difficult-to-access nation.
Indeed, separating fact from fiction in North Korea is not easy to do. The shrouded-in-mystery state offers plenty of misinformation through its state-run media and allows for precious few outsiders to provide an unbiased perspective, thanks to an effort by the isolated country’s leaders to block information from entering or exiting the country. Instead, we are left with unsubstantiated but oft-repeated rumors, like Jong-un feeding his uncle, Jang Song Thaek, to 120 starving dogs.

This video is made up from almost 3000 photos taken over four weeks of travelling around China and Hong Kong. We spent five days in Beijing, prior to our trip in North Korea, seeing celebrations for Golden Week - China National Day in Tiananmen Square and the Summer Palace. We joined the Dragon Trip, after returning from North Korea, for an 18 day tour around China beginning in Yangshuo. Yangshuo (in Guilin) is famous for its Karst mountain range spread across its farmland. The War Of Eyes - How Tourism Helps The Two Koreas To Stare Down Each Other
This clip documents a day trip to the Joint Security Area at the border that divides the Korean Peninsula. A tourist bus starts from Seoul and stops at an observatory near the Freedom Bridge where tourists can peer into the North. NORTH KOREA has closed its borders in fear of the spread of the Ebola virus. But at a time when the secretive state was still welcoming tourists, former aid worker Andrew Macleod made the journey to the repressive nation. Andrew’s holiday snaps and camera footage provide a unique insight into the reclusive country, where he came across deserted motorways, metro stations plastered with propaganda and attractive border guards.

I've always been very interested in North Korea because it seemed to be one of the most unique and mysterious countries in the whole world. This is my day to da...
I've always been very interested in North Korea because it seemed to be one of the most unique and mysterious countries in the whole world. This is my day to day life throughout the 7 days that I spent in North Korea. You can never be sure whether things were staged or not in North Korea because you are only shown what they want you to see. You can't choose where or when you will be going to specific places, they simply tell you to hop on a bus and ask you to get off at one point or another.
That is why I didn't want to offer my opinion about whether things were staged or not, whether they were good or not, or honest or not. My goal was to show you what my day to day life looked like when I was there and let you make up your own mind and judge for yourself.
Do not judge North Korea only from what you see in this video. This is what they showed us and there's a reason they show some things and not show the others. Also, knowing how much control they exercise over the population, everything could have been staged only for us.

The Parade
The ground started to shake and ripple under your feet as the tanks started to roll by,the street filled with thick clouds of diesel fumes.Alongside the thunderous noise you could still here the cheering. large groups of school children were trying to out sing or out screen each other, parents, grandparents waving plastic flowers some resembling mechanical toys,they lined the streets for as far as you could see.The tanks were followed by missile launchers,rockets, artillary canons and finally a never ending convoy of open top trucks filled with cheering soldiers.the whole parade had been delayed for hours due to a few clouds in the sky so by the time it had passed by it was completly dark.Finally as the convoy started to thin out the heavens opened up.the wind picked up and it poured down.For a while everyone remained in place and kept cheering what was left of the Korean Peoples Army and then like a giant herd of startled wilderbeast everyone was on the move.I took refuge in the middle of a brass band who had held their ground.The police were still frantically blowing their whistles trying to keep some order,in this chaos the brass band were still playing.I looked around it looked like a scene from Titanic.
At some point I felt a hand on my shoulder,It was a very relieved Mr Pak my Korean guide,he told me the whole group had been waiting on the bus for over an hour to leave.Too bad I thought knowing to well that going to A mass parade is the only opportunity your ever get as a tourist to wander around freely on your own in the highly controlled state of The Democratic Peoples Republic of Korea
When travelling around North Korea the two english words you will probrually hear more than any other will be No Photo.The general rules layed down by the korean guides are not to take photos of people in military uniform,construction sights or images of what they percieve to be of poverty.This makes filming In the country pretty challenging,images of what many westerners including myself see as being oldschool,rectro rustic and unspoilt completly confuse the koreans who would much rather you took images of the statues of their dear leaders,monuments and newly constructed appartment blocks.
Ive always just used a DSLR to shoot video in NK,it seems to draw less attention.
Beyond all the propaganda, and facades you encounter in North korea.The natural wonders that the country holds are undeniably beautifull and as for the people,everything they do is done with so much dedication,dertimination, and a togetherness that ive never encounterd before.

This video is made up from almost 3000 photos taken over four weeks of travelling around China and Hong Kong.
We spent five days in Beijing, prior to our trip in North Korea, seeing celebrations for Golden Week - China National Day in Tiananmen Square and the Summer Palace.
We joined the Dragon Trip, after returning from North Korea, for an 18 day tour around China beginning in Yangshuo. Yangshuo (in Guilin) is famous for its Karst mountain range spread across its farmland. Here we saw a rural side of China; seeing the scenic view from 20 Yuan note, visiting a Dragon Trip's tour guide's family farm, have a cooking class, cycle through the mountains and farmland, float down the Yulong River on a bamboo raft and see the traditional Cormorant bird Fishing.
After Yangshuo we travelled to Chengdu; the heart of the West of China. We visited the largest building in the world the Global Center and saw pandas at the worlds biggest, Giant Panda Breeding & Research Center.
We then explored Xi'An seeing the Terracotta Warriors and cycling around the Ming Dynasty City Walls. After Xi'An we visited Dengfeng home of the Shaolin Monks and had a Kungfu lesson at a Children’s Home run by the Shaolin Temple.
Next we returned to Beijing seeing the Olympic Bird’s Nest stadium, hiked an unrestored section of the Great Wall and visited the Forbidden City and the Temple of Heaven.
From Beijing we travelled to Moganshan to hike to Moganshan Peak, see Chairman Mao’s previous summer residence and swim in a lagoon.
At the end of the Dragon Trip, we spent a week in Shanghai over Halloween. From Shanghai we flew to Hong Kong and while there took a ferry over to Macau.

This clip documents a day trip to the Joint Security Area at the border that divides the Korean Peninsula. A tourist bus starts from Seoul and stops at an observatory near the Freedom Bridge where tourists can peer into the North. A tour guide provides the South Korean perspective on North Korea explaining i.e. the lack of trees in the North and the small size of North Korean Soldiers. The travel terminates in Panmunjeom within the JSA where guards and tourists stare at each other from both sides. The regulations allow tourists to carry nothing else than their cameras, the suitable equipment to be utilized in this "War Of Eyes" where filming and photographing is explicitely allowed.
The final highlight of the trip is a visit to the souvenir shop in the Demilitarized Zone where one can buy i.e. miniature dolls of soldiers, ginseng and uniforms.

North Korea’s hair-brained leader, Kim Jong-Un, brought in one of the strangest laws ever. He decreed that there are only 28 government approved hair styles that men and women can get. To be specific, there are 10 for men and 18 for women. Strangely though, the lardy leader’s own unique slicked back style isn’t on the list, which just seems unfair. Fascination and amusement at the expense of what is known as the Hermit State has even extended into pop culture. 30 Rock satirized Jong-Il’s penchant for exaggerating – or outright making up - his own achievements and the ‘truths’ of the country’s state-run media. The Interview depicted Seth Rogen and James Franco embarking upon a mission to assassinate Jong-un but never reached theaters partially in response to alleged threats by North Korea. The weirdness reached new heights when NBA star and noted eccentric Dennis Rodman formed a friendship with Jong-un and even paid a few visits to the difficult-to-access nation.
Indeed, separating fact from fiction in North Korea is not easy to do. The shrouded-in-mystery state offers plenty of misinformation through its state-run media and allows for precious few outsiders to provide an unbiased perspective, thanks to an effort by the isolated country’s leaders to block information from entering or exiting the country. Instead, we are left with unsubstantiated but oft-repeated rumors, like Jong-un feeding his uncle, Jang Song Thaek, to 120 starving dogs.
Thus, any examination of North Korea can only be facilitated through piecing together various bits of factual information that emerge occasionally from the country. Reports from international human rights organizations like the United Nations, infrequent accounts from international news outlets and a scattering of stories from those who have successfully left the country have helped form a rough idea of how the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) operates. It is through these narratives and perspectives that a basic understanding of North Korea is formed. With that in mind, let’s take a glimpse inside this confounding place and examine some of the craziest-but-true facts about it.

The weirdness reached new heights when NBA star and noted eccentric Dennis Rodman formed a friendship with Jong-un and even paid a few visits to the difficult-to-access nation.
Indeed, separating fact from fiction in North Korea is not easy to do. The shrouded-in-mystery state offers plenty of misinformation through its state-run media and allows for precious few outsiders to provide an unbiased perspective, thanks to an effort by the isolated country’s leaders to block information from entering or exiting the country. Instead, we are left with unsubstantiated but oft-repeated rumors, like Jong-un feeding his uncle, Jang Song Thaek, to 120 starving dogs.
Thus, any examination of North Korea can only be facilitated through piecing together various bits of factual information that emerge occasionally from the country. Reports from international human rights organizations like the United Nations, infrequent accounts from international news outlets and a scattering of stories from those who have successfully left the country have helped form a rough idea of how the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) operates. It is through these narratives and perspectives that a basic understanding of North Korea is formed. We start from the Beijing Railway Station in Dandong, China. North Korea train ticket is the best way to see the countryside and meet some North Korean elite passengers without his government. caregivers present. The Americans have to fly to the capital but (unless you have dual nationality).
Arrival in Pyongyang by train. Respect childminders government that serve as guides (two of them) and they rarely leave his side. There is also a separate control unit.
Transfer to the Yanggakdo hotel and discuss itinerary for the trip. This is a large high-rise hotel on its own small island in Pyongyang. The hotel is one of about 3 foreigners staying in the city. It's nice, very quiet, and it's hard to leave the hotel without guard pointing.
