GENTLE KNIFE (Crossover Prog • Norway) with a NEW ALBUM

Gentle Knife is a Norwegian progressive rock ensemble featuring eleven members. With male and female vocalists, multiple guitarists, keys, synths, mellotron, woodwinds and more, their signature sound dips deeply into classic 70s prog, resurfacing with a modern take on the genre.

Gentle Knife's conceptual debut album THE GENTLE KNIFE (2015) takes you from the clamor of the big city, into an alluring forest. The journey is supposed to renew your energy, but somewhere deep in the forest, you are drawn away from the path, and into the unknown. The album has attracted considerable interest worldwide on websites, in Facebook-groups, music magazines and on radio shows specializing in progressive rock.

The relentless passage of time is the main theme of Gentle Knife's latest outing and 2nd upcoming album, CLOCK UNWOUND (soon, 2017). The album delves into lives overshadowed by longing and disappointment. Plans go askew, lovers betray and dreams fade. Yet, as a sense of resignation descends upon a dystopic inner landscape, moments of beauty remain. Songs are epic in format, and play across a broad spectrum of emotions.

A taste of the album may be found here:

Short snippets of each piece might be found here:

Clock Unwound (2017)

"The relentless passage of time is the main theme of the 2nd album, Clock Unwound, which delves into lives overshadowed by longing and disappointment. Plans go askew, lovers betray and dreams fade. Yet, as a sense of resignation descends upon a dystopic inner landscape, moments of beauty remain. Songs are epic in format, and play across a broad spectrum of emotions.

The album is mixed and mastered by progressive rock heavyweights Markus Reuter and Benjamin Schäfer of Unsung Productions, in Berlin, Germany (Stick Men, Crimson ProjeKct et al.) and mastered by Lee Fletcher.

A prog collective of 11 strongwilled persons with collective credits and mutual veto is quite a challenging place to be occasionally, but it is also a quite remarkable organism once there's agreement on a project and on developing a piece. So right now, we would say that the band is doing well :-)"

Aeroblus, Rock (Argentina)

Aeroblus was a hard rock power trio composed of Pappo, Alejandro Medina and Rolando Castello Junior. It was an ephemeral project of Pappo's Blues. They recorded a single plate in Buenos Aires in May of 1977. The album is something different from what was recording Pappo, with a style closer to heavy metal, anticipating what would later be Riff.

After dissolving Pappo's Blues, Pappo and Alejandro Medina (bassist Manal and La Pesada del Rock and Roll) decide to form a new group, but in the absence of a suitable drummer, they travel to Brazil in their search and find with Rolando Castello Junior to Form the trio Aeroblus.2

They debuted on January 6, 1977 at the Teatro Premier in Buenos Aires with a series of concerts that received negative reviews for their "lack of rehearsal", a problem that was quickly resolved.2

This was how Aeroblus managed to edit his only work. The delay in the edition of the album, plus the pressure made by the police in those years in Argentina during the Military Dictatorship, made Rolando Castello Junior decide to return and stay in Brazil. Already in 1978, Pappo again next to Medina Reflects Aeroblus, incorporating to Claudio Pesavento in keyboards and without Castello, that is replaced by Gonzalo Farrugia. The group performs in Mar del Plata playing songs from the album and some new, but it does not thrive despite the good reviews of the time, and Pappo decides again to return with Pappo's Blues.

ADRIAN BELEW Eclectic Prog • United States

Adrian Belew was born Robert Steven Belew on December 23, 1949, in Covington, KY, Belew's first instrument of interest was the drums, as he soon kept the backbeat in his high school's marching band. But not long after his discovery of the Beatles, Belew picked up the guitar, teaching himself how to play and to write original songs. In 1975, he officially changed his name to Adrian (because he liked the name).

During the mid/late 70's, Adrian did work with FRANK ZAPPA, which in turn led to his meeting with BRIAN ENO, which in turn led him to his work with the TALKING HEADS. After the album that he worked on with the group came out, Robert Fripp approached Adrian and asked if he would like to join a new version of KING CRIMSON. "Discipline" came out in 1981, and the album featured Adrian's Roland Guitar Synth, which provided many bizarre sounds to the already stellar sound. His first solo album, "Lone Rhino" was released in 1982. In the following years, Adrian would release many other solo efforts, and would collaborate with such artists as David Bowie and Porcupine Tree.

In 2005, Adrian released the first third of his concept piece titled "Side One". This album featured the talents of Les Claypool (Primus) on the bass guitar and Danny Carey (Tool) on the drums. This album had many bizarre Krimson-esque sound and was acclaimed by fans and critics. "Side Two" was released on July 12, 2005. It features a more electronic approach to the sound, but still has some Krimson guitar sounds.

Adrian Belew pushes the envelope with his musical direction and spirit. I highly recommend that you delve into the depths of Adrian Belew's catalogue.

DR. Z - Heavy Prog

Dr. Z biography http://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=1230 )
DR. Z. is an obscure early 70's English trio whose LP version of their only album now fetches in the 3-digit price range (only 80 copies were sold at the time, the rest of the pressings were trashed by their record company). A cd version of the album, released by Vertigo in 1991, features a couple of extra tracks. The dominant mood of the album ("Three Parts to my Soul") is set by a percussive harpsichord that is alternately majestic and militaristic - imagine the sound of a Keith EMERSON harpsichord concerto if Carl PALMER matched him note for note on a kettle drum. The lyrics, dealing with occultism and the evil of man, are far better written than the music, which sounds rather clumsy and awkward to our modern ears. At its most inventive and textured, the album is a fine example of early 70's prog at its darkest. It has simple rhythms and the music is peculiarly obsessive, with very long piano and organ solos, baroque melodies and satanic lyrics.

Strictly for serious collectors of dark, early 70's curios willing to overlook a highly mangled production.

10,000 MANIACS

Hypnos 69 (Rock - Belgian)

The history of Hypnos 69 began at the end of the '80s, when Steve and Dave Houtmeyers played in a political punk oriented band called Massagraf. The band had several line-ups, although Steve and Dave were the only steady members. They released one 7" EP in 1992 and split up that same year. At that time Steve was active with Belgian grindcore pioneers Agathocles (band). Agathocles and Dave started anarcho punk band Intestinal Disease. Both bands toured Europe and South America. By 1994 Steve Houtmeyers decided to quit Agathocles and form his own, more '70s rock oriented band called Starfall. It included Dave Houtmeyers on drums and Tom Vanlaer on bass. By 1995 after doing some local shows, they changed their name to Hypnos 69.

In 2000 the first Hypnos 69 release appeared on the Belgian Rock & Roll Radio record label entitled Wherever Time has shared it's Trust" on blue 10" EP vinyl. The first full-length CD appeared also on RocknRollRadio in 2002 entitled Timeline Traveller and contains bad ass heavy '70s rock. The band toured with this CD in Germany, The Netherlands, France and Czech Republic.

When the band presented their second full CD Promise of a New Moon on R³ in 2003, Steven Marx was introduced into Hypnos. From being a guest musician he rapidly became a part of the live-set and a new member of the band.

In October 2004 the band decided to make a deal with the German record label ElektroHasch. Their third full CD The Intrigue of Perception, along with a split 10" EP with Germany's Colour Haze was released in November 2004.

In 2006, after extended touring in Scandinavia, Germany, the Netherlands, France, Switzerland, Austria and Italy, the band recorded The Eclectic Measure. The artwork was done by Italian graphic artists Malleus. By November 2006, the band was on hold, due to some personal issues in the band, but after six months decided to tour again. In Autumn 2007 Hypnos 69 toured to promote The Eclectic Measure throughout Europe.

Afro Blues Quintet Plus One - Jazz

A mid-'60s sextet with a Latin edge, the Afro-Blues Quintet + 1 featured a vibes/sax front line and a rhythm section augmented by congas and timbales assisting the standard piano/bass/drums instrumentation. The group's albums included political and protest pieces, originals, remakes of standards like "Green Dolphin Street," religious/spiritual numbers, soul/jazz and R&B hits, plus some challenging tunes such as "3/4-5/4-7-2." Joe De Aguero on vibes and alto saxophonist/flutist Jack Fulks were the principal soloists, with pianist Bill Henderson, bassist Norm Johnson, conga player Moses Obligacion, and Michael Davis on drums and timbales completing the lineup.

Despite the fact that this one was cut for the knock-off Surrey label, the album's actually one of the best that the Afro Blues ensemble ever recorded! The whole thing's got a lively soul jazz groove, with plenty of flute and sax solos, nice vibes, and a good strong piano-driven Latiny groove. Titles include "Song For Mitch", "Karen's Theme", "Okey Dokey", "Our Mambo", and "The Joker". Very tasty!  © 1996-2015, Dusty Groove, Inc.

The Clash - Punk Rock

The Clash were an English punk rock band that formed in 1976 as part of the original wave of British punk. Along with punk, their music incorporated elements of reggae, dub, funk, ska and rockabilly. For most of their recording career the Clash consisted of Joe Strummer (lead vocals, rhythm guitar), Mick Jones (lead guitar, lead vocals), Paul Simonon (bass guitar, vocals) and Nicky "Topper" Headon (drums, percussion). Headon left the group in 1982, and internal friction led to Jones's departure the following year. The group continued with new members, but finally disbanded in early 1986.

The Clash achieved commercial success in the United Kingdom with the release of their self-titled debut album, The Clash, in 1977. Their third album, London Calling, released in the UK in December 1979, earned them popularity in the United States when it was released there the following month. It was declared the best album of the 1980s a decade later by Rolling Stone. In 1982 they reached new heights of success with the release of Combat Rock, which spawned the US top 10 hit "Rock the Casbah", helping the album to achieve a 2× Platinum certification there. Their final album, Cut the Crap, was released in 1985.

The Clash's politicised lyrics, musical experimentation, and rebellious attitude had a far-reaching influence on rock, and alternative rock in particular. They became widely referred to as "The Only Band That Matters", originally a promotional slogan introduced by the group's record label, CBS. In January 2003, shortly after the death of Joe Strummer, the band—including original drummer Terry Chimes—were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In 2004, Rolling Stone Magazine ranked the Clash number 28 on their list of the 100 greatest artists of all time.

Critic Sean Egan summarised what made them exceptional by writing, "They were a group whose music was, and is, special to their audience because that music insisted on addressing the conditions of poverty, petty injustice, and mundane life experienced by the people who bought their records. Moreover, although their rebel stances were often no more than posturing, from The Clash's stubborn principles came a fundamental change in the perception of what is possible in the music industry, from subject matter to authenticity to quality control to price ceilings."

Academy - Folk Prog (France)

Academy was a group formed in France, but only Jacques Cassard was born in the country. The other members of the quartet were American, Italian and Greek. The group was active in the early 70s and has just launched a rare album in 1972, disbanding soon after. The selt-titled is divided into 10 folk rock songs, with light touches of psychedelia and remembering English bands of the time. The instrument is basically acoustic and dominated by acoustic guitars and percussion, with some good points of guitar and flute. The female vocals of Ann are another highlight, impressive and fitting very well to sound and always in English. A work that deserves attention from all folk rock and female vocals fans.

Absolute Elsewhere - Eclectic Prog • United Kingdom

Absolute Elsewhere biography (http://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=680)
ABSOLUTE ELSEWHERE is basically a solo effort by one Paul FISHMAN. He wrote it all, arranged it, played all the instruments (synths, sequencers, flute, pianos, mellotron) except guitars & percussion. "In Search of Ancient Gods" is an instrumental album that's a musical interpretation of Erich Von Daniken's books. This is a real fine album of HELDON meets CRIMSON and Alan PARSONS with tons of mellotrons. This is recommended to diehard fans of BRUFORD on drums or to fans of early synthesizer albums.
