Solving the mystery of chronic fatigue syndrome
For decades, no one has known what causes myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME, commonly called ME/CFS). As a result, this debilitating disease has been very difficult to diagnose and even harder to treat. Now a collaborative JAX research center led by Derya Unutmaz, M.D., is diving deep into the biology of ME/CFS patients to find a root cause, which may lie in their own immune systems. If successful, the work will provide patients with clear diagnoses and effective therapies.

Medical Resident Stress and Fatigue - Mayo Clinic
It seems long hours in the hospital are causing more than stress and fatigue among doctors-in-training — they're crashing, or nearly crashing, their cars after work. The Mayo Clinic research found that nearly half of the roughly 300 Mayo Clinic residents polled during the course of their residencies reported nearly getting into a motor vehicle crash during their training, and about 11 percent were actually involved in a traffic accident. Lead author Colin West, M.D., Ph.D., an internal medicine physician says,"Just like any other field, residents need their recovery time. In order to make good decisions, physicians need to be physically and emotionally well."

Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), also referred to as myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME), is a medical condition characterized by long-term fatigue and other persistent symptoms that limit a person's ability to carry out ordinary daily activities.
While the cause is not understood, proposed mechanisms include biological, genetic, infectious, and psychological. Diagnosis is based on a person's symptoms because there is no confirmed diagnostic test. The fatigue in CFS is not due to strenuous ongoing exertion, is not much relieved by rest and is not due to a previous medical condition. Fatigue is a common symptom in many illnesses, but the unexplained fatigue and severity of functional impairment in CFS is comparatively rare.
There is no cure, with treatment being symptomatic. No medications or procedures have been approved in the United States. Evidence suggests that cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and a gradual increase in activity suited to individual capacity can be beneficial in some cases. In a systematic review of exercise therapy, no evidence of serious adverse effects was found, however data was insufficient to form a conclusion. Some patient support groups have criticized the use of CBT and graded exercise therapy (GET). Tentative evidence supports the use of the medication rintatolimod. This evidence, however, was deemed insufficient to approve sales for CFS treatment in the United States.

What is fatigue?
One of the most common questions we get on the K Health app is, why am I so tired? In my case, that’s because of the two young children who keep me up at night. In your case, there are various different things to consider.
One of the first things to consider is your lifestyle. This includes things like:
How many hours of sleep are you getting?
Is your sleep of good quality?
What is your diet like?
What are your exercise habits?
Oftentimes, making adjustments there will have a big impact on your level of energy.
We also want to think about some medical problems that could cause you to be fatigued. For instance, chronic fatigue syndrome or fibromyalgia are some disorders associated with fatigue as one of the primary complaints. Other medical problems that can cause fatigue include things like sleep apnea. With that, you may get a lot of hours of sleep but the quality of sleep is quite low. Anemia, or low blood counts, can also cause you to be fatigued. There are various hormone problems, for instance, low levels of thyroid function, which would also result in fatigue as one of the main symptoms. Of course, we can’t forget about mood disorders. Problems like depression or anxiety can have fatigue as one of the primary symptoms.
How can I treat fatigue?
If you have fatigue, it’s very important to talk to your doctor. That’s because it might be worthwhile to look for some of those medical problems that are associated with fatigue. If you have one of those problems, the treatments will be significantly impacted depending on which problem it is.
If you don’t have any of those underlying problems, there are some basic tips you can follow. Number one: focus on good sleep quality. That means don’t bring your iPhone to bed, don’t watch TV in bed, and try to get 7-8 hours of undisturbed sleep each night.
If you’re feeling tired all the time and want to know what are the causes of your symptoms, download the K Health app. There you can complete a health dialogue and learn how people like you were diagnosed and treated. It might show you something you didn’t know, for instance low blood count or depressed mood. You can also chat with one of our doctors directly through the app.

In 2001 Linda Jones’s world changed. As a young and successful business woman she was living a happy and fulfilled life; working long hours travelling the country, a fitness fanatic who enjoyed a full social life. Looking back there was recognition that this was unsustainable. Early recognition signs and symptoms were ignored, and led to complete burn out. Linda’s journey to full recovery sparked a passion to help others as she set up Salus Fatigue Foundation In 2001, after illness, Linda Jones, CEO Salus Fatigue Foundation & Life4Changing was diagnosed with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. She lost everything. Her relentless attitude, which caused her burnout in the first place, meant she wasn’t going to just accept that diagnosis and become a statistic. Determined to recover and get her life back she took a holistic approach and coached herself back to health.
In the last 10 years, her journey to full recovery sparked a passion to help others and this idea became the Salus Fatigue Foundation. To date 15, 000 people have been helped to create a self-managed path to recovery through raising awareness and support programs. Linda also heads up Life4Changing helping organisations boost employee engagement, productivity and performance. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx

Growing Wheat For The First Time
It has been really interesting to growing wheat for the first time, with quite different needs while growing and quite labour intensive to harvest, thresh and clean. But is it worth it?
I used to assume that it would not be worth the effort to grow wheat at a small scale, but then I was given a batch of mixed seed as part of a really interesting seed saving project.
