A scene from one of my favorite comedies. Dom DeLuise at his brilliant best. And Burt Reynolds as the straight man. His facial expressions are priceless. This is a great, under rated comedy.
An original television trailer for the 1978 Burt Reynolds comedy co-starring Dom DeLuise, Sally Field, Joanne Woodward, David Steinberg, Kristy McNichol, Myrna Loy, Pat O'Brien, Strother Martin, Carl Reiner, Norman Fell, and Robby Benson.

If you recall, last May I posted the closing of the 20th Century Fox Video release of Burt Reynolds' 1978 comedy The End. Those who have seen it on home video have always wondered about the theme song "Another Fine Mess". In the opening credits, Glen Campbell is credited as singing the tune, yet when you watch the film, it is sung by Paul Williams, who composed it. I have no idea whether Campbell or Williams vocals were in the theatric...

Very unique spot for the Burt Reynolds / Dom DeLuise comedy outside a "sneak preview" for the movie.
Another clip from one of my favorite comedies of all time. Burt Reynolds is hilarious as he tries to negotiate with God to give him strength.

A film created by Carl Schlesinger and David Loeb Weiss documenting the last day of hot metal typesetting at The New York Times. This film shows the entire newspaper production process from hot-metal typesetting to creating stereo moulds to high-speed press operation. At the end of the film, the new typesetting and photographic production process is shown in contrast to the old ways. There are interviews with workers at NYT that are for and against the new technology. In fact, one typesetter is retiring on this final day as he does not want to learn the new process and technology. This is the first time the film has ever been available in HD from the original 16mm master film. See more printing, journalism, and typographic-related films at: www.printingfilms.com
THIS MUST BE THE PLACE: POST-PUNK TRIBES 1978 – 1982 Friday, July 27 – Sunday, July 29 After the much-hyped filth and fury of the initial punk movement almost instantly combusted or codified, things got much more interesting. In the halcyon pre-internet days, regional scenes were allowed to grow and develop their own identifiable and often highly idiosyncratic sounds, word of one another’s development spreading slowly through fanzines and small mail order distributors. Lucky for us, there were also cameras laying around, and the rare films in this series provide an invaluable snapshot of one of the most exciting – and one of the most loosely-defined – periods of music in the 20th Century. THIS MUST BE THE PLACE is your highly opinionated guide to viewing these creatures in their native ha...
Patti Smith Group - Easter (1978) Easter Sunday, we were walking. Easter Sunday, we were talking. Isabel, my little one, take my hand. Time has come. Isabella, all is glowing. Isabella, all is knowing. And my heart, Isabella. And my head, Isabella. Frederick and Vitalie, savior dwells inside of thee. Oh, the path leads to the sun. Brother, sister, time has come. Isabella, all is glowing. Isabella, all is knowing. Isabella, we are dying. Isabella, we are rising. I am the spring, the holy ground, the endless seed of mystery, the thorn, the veil, the face of grace, the brazen image, the thief of sleep, the ambassador of dreams, the prince of peace. I am the sword, the wound, the stain. Scorned transfigured child of Cain. I rend, I end, I return. Again I am the salt, the bitter laugh. I a...

Main Title Sequence and Special Visual Effects Design: Denis Rich (London) Main Title Credits: Steve Frankfurt Communications/R. Greenberg Assoc. Inc. (New York) Visual Effects (Academy Award): Les Bowie, Colin Chilvers, Denys N. Coop, Roy Field, Derek Meddings, Zoran Perisic (Athough by today's standards it looks a bit creaky, at the time this was cutting edge stuff!) Denis's epic title sequence journeying from Comic book to the Daily Planet and Krypton was intended to be populated by titles made from crystal as a way of introducing us to the technology behind the doomed planet. After weeks of unsuccesful testing with perspex letters, we opted for an optical 'strobe' approach which ended on the cutting room floor in favour of R/Greenberg Associates's version - slit scan - very tasty in...
It's the spring of 1978 and a young woman finds herself thrown into a series of bizarre and troubling experiences. Shot to create the feel of Super 8 film this experimental short asks fundamental questions about self-control and if we really have free will at all. We filmed this with a zero budget over a weekend as our first ever test of the Panasonic GH2 and Zoom Q3HD (audio only mode for dialogue) for a feature shoot we have planned. Not adding grain was a deliberate choice, as I didn't want to be too literal. In-camera white balance and shutter settings produce most of the Super 8 effect - no plugins or grain fx were used in post. Only the edge vignette, some jitter, and some slight occasional colour flicker towards the end were added to complete the effect. And yes - the edit is de...
“Hoffman’s film is in the experimental film tradition of the personal diary although in this case a beautifully paced mixture of family photographs and dramatic reconstruction interwoven into a narrative that creates objective distance. On the Pond reveals skills of editing, sound and story-telling which evoke in ten minutes a complex and emotional study of family, its past and present, its young dreams and its affections. Unsentimental, evocative and perfectly pitched in its emotional resonance, it avoids all the pitfalls of personal narrative and is an excellent example of the short film’s power when handled with skill, sensitivity and integrity. (Michael O’Pray) “Hoffman’s first completed film already bears the traits of his future works: an interest in family history and the reconstru...

1978 Chevrolet Corvette L82... It would take somebody with a pretty exquisite viewpoint and a surfeit of chutzpah to call the whole thing a bum idea now. Imagine being such a thundering success that you can make a big deal out of some extra rear glass, a glovebox and an enlarged tailpipe ! Yet there she stands, groomed and ready for the faithful with $11,388 (1978 Price) worth of standard equipment and options - and GM will sell just about every one of the 43,000 or so it produces this year, quite a few of them sporting a special 2-tone silver/gray Silver Anniversary paint job. Our test car was blue inside, however, flagrant as sin and proud of it. No doubt about it, the Corvette is an idea whose time not only came in with a bang, but has already lasted for a quarter century. An All...
Anyone who's shaken dust
Knows that it should fall back
Harmless
It's over now
Things have changed
Everything is different And rearranged
We never got the way that we should go
Tears and heartache, nothing more
I had to play grownup in our game
That wasn't fair, that was the worst thing
And if I didn't say this was the end
You would still be here now
We wanted to be out of our heads
In all that we could do
Daddy didn't but you a diamond ring
And mummy's still waiting for better things
Baby's on his own now he's qualified
Remember I was there on his down days
You'll do good and you know that too
If I can give them I will do
Mummy's gonna buy you a brand new life
Mummy's gonna buy you a brand new life
And if I didn't say this was the end
You would still be here now
We wanted to be out of our heads
In all that we could do
Born leaders, no, no we are not
Born leaders, no, no never growing up
Born leaders, no
My hands be still should my eyes be bright
And if I didn't say this was the end
You would still be here now
We wanted to be out of our heads
In all that we could do
And if I didn't say this was the end
You would still be here now
