Edmílson (footballer, born 1976)

José Edmílson Gomes de Moraes (born 10 July 1976), known simply as Edmílson, is a retired Brazilian footballer.

Either a defensive midfielder or a central defender, he played in three different countries in his professional career, representing with team and individual success São Paulo, Lyon and Barcelona (four seasons each in the last two clubs).

Having won 42 caps with Brazil, Edmilson represented the nation at the 2002 World Cup, helping it win the tournament.

Club career

São Paulo / Lyon

Born in Taquaritinga, São Paulo, Edmílson signed for São Paulo FC in 1994, winning the São Paulo State titles in 1998 and 2000, adding the 1994 CONMEBOL Cup and the subsequent Recopa Sudamericana.

In the summer of 2000 he signed for Olympique Lyonnais in France, at the same time as compatriot Caçapa, also a stopper, both being important as the club won the League Cup in his first season. In the ensuing off-season Juninho Pernambucano joined the team, and often partnered Edmílson in central midfield, with the Rhône-Alpes side going on to win three consecutive Ligue 1 titles.

Standard Liège

Royal Standard de Liège, commonly referred to as Standard Liège (pronounced: [stɑ̃daʁ ljɛːʒ]; Dutch: Standard Luik [ˈstɑndɑrt ˈlœy̯k]; German: Standard Lüttich [ˈstandaʁt ˈlʏtɪç] or [ˈʃtandaʁt ˈlʏtɪç]), is a Belgian football club from the city of Liège. They are one of the most successful clubs in Belgium, having won the Belgian league on ten occasions, most recently in 2007–08 and 2008–09. They have been in the top flight without interruption since 1921, longer than any other Belgian side. They have also won six Belgian Cups, and in 1981–82 they reached the final of the European Cup Winners' Cup, which they lost 2–1 against Barcelona.

Standard players are nicknamed the "Rouches" because of their red jerseys. The French word for red, rouge, when pronounced with a Walloon accent, sounds like "rouche."

History

On the first day of school in September 1898, the pupils of Collège Saint-Servais in Liège started a football club, which they called Standard of Liège in reference to Standard Athletic Club of Paris. Standard, whose official name is Royal Standard Club of Liège, was based in Cointe and Grivegnée before settling permanently in 1909 in Sclessin, an industrial neighbourhood in Liège. Standard initially joined the Belgian First League in 1909 before returning to the lower leagues a few years later. The club then gained promotion back to the top division in 1921 and has never been relegated since.

Edmilson Junior

Edmilson Junior, commonly known as Edmilson (born 19 August 1994 in Brussels) is a Belgian footballer who plays as a winger for Belgian Pro League club Standard Liège.

Career

On 22 August 2012, Edmilson made his debut for Sint-Truiden in the Belgian Second Division as a 81st minute substitute in the 3–1 win over KV Oostende. His first goal for the club came later that year in November, during the Belgian Cup tie against KVC Westerlo which ended 5–5. Sint-Truiden won the tie on penalties. On 6 January 2016, after making 87 appearances and scoring 9 goals for Sint-Truiden, Edmilson left to rejoin former club Standard Liège where he made a reunion with former Sint-Truiden manager Yannick Ferrera. He signed a three-year contract.
