Jim Burns (born April 10, 1948) is a Welsh artist born in Cardiff, Wales. He has been called one of the Grand Masters of the science fiction art world.
In 1966 he joined the Royal Air Force, but soon thereafter he left and signed up at the Newport School of Art for a year's foundation course.
After that, he went on to complete a 3-year Diploma in Art and Design at Saint Martin's School of Art in London. When he left Saint Martin's in 1972 he had already joined the recently established illustration agency Young Artists. He has been with this agency, later renamed Arena, ever since.
He is today a contemporary British science fiction illustrator. His work mostly deals with science fiction with erotic overtones. His paintings are generally intricate photo-realistic works of beautiful women set against advanced machines and spaceships. While his preparatory sketches are more erotically focused, his final works and published book covers have a more academic tone portraying far off and imaginary worlds.
James "Jim" Burns (born 10 August 1943) is a former Scottish footballer.
Burns, a defender, began his career with Cowdenbeath. He made over 200 appearances for them before joining Clyde in 1967. Burns spent 9 years with the Glasgow club, and made over 300 appearances, making him one of the club's finest servants. Burns left Clyde in 1976 to join Stirling Albion. He retired in 1980, and became a coach at Stirling.
The characters of Oz, fictional characters on the television series about prison life, are a diverse mixture of inmates from various gangs and prison staff.
The corrections officers (COs) are mostly white (predominantly Irish and Italian) with many black and some Latino officers. The warden, Leo Glynn, is African American and started off his career as a CO at Oz. Most of the COs come from lower socio-economic classes. Some are amoral and prone to corruption. The main unit manager, Tim McManus, is the only authority figure who has not started off as a guard and this therefore gives him a different point of view about how to deal with the inmates. The rest of the non-correctional staff, such as Dr. Gloria Nathan and psychiatrist Sister Peter Marie ("Sister Pete") Reimondo, have a much more humane view of prisoners, and often push Glynn and the others to see the inmates as human beings. Overall, different factions within the staff are almost always at odds, trying to manage internal problems while keeping the public calm regarding the way the prison is being managed.
James B. "Jim" Burns (born September 21, 1945) is the Inspector General for the Illinois Secretary of State. He is also a retired American basketball player.
A native of McLeansboro, Illinois, Burns was an All-State player who led McLeansboro High School to a fourth-place finish in the 1962 State Championship Tournament. He then played collegiately for Northwestern University, 1964–67, where he led the team in scoring all three seasons, was both All-American and Academic All-American in 1967, All-Big Ten and Academic All-Big Ten in 1966 & '67, and is still Northwestern's #12 all-time scorer, #3 in scoring average, #10 in both field goals and free throws made, and #6 in points in a game (40). He was inducted into the Northwestern Athletics Hall of Fame in 1992.
He was selected by the Chicago Bulls in the 4th round (34th pick overall) of the 1967 NBA Draft. He played only three games with the Bulls during the 1967-68 season where he teamed with fellow McLeansboro native Jerry Sloan. Burns also played for the Dallas Chaparrals (1967–68) in the ABA for 33 games.
