There are elements of Maurice Ravel's 'Daphne et Chloe' in this, yes, for those who were wondering, and I did mix the two together.
In this Otto Preminger directed film noir we meet some of the defining characters of the genre, and we view one of the best movies of the 40s. Despite the great script, to-a-tee acting, smoky atmosphere and moody cinematography, what really comes in to focus with this movie is its music. After all, if you look at most of the great movies, you will find a great score backing up the brilliance. This score is done by David Raksin.

LAURA was originally recorded as an instrumental and used in the 1944 film classic : "LAURA" , starring: Dana Andrews, Gene Tierney, & Vincent Price. In 1945 lyrics were added by Singer-Composer- Lyricist, Johnny Mercer, and was recorded in February of the same year by Woody Herman on the Columbia Records label. The film was based on a 1942 novel written by Vera Caspary, also titled " LAURA " . It should be noted that when Johnny Mercer wrote the lyrics to David Raksin's melody, he had never watched the film that the melody was used in and yet, his lyrics captured the feeling & tone of the film almost completely. Johnny Mercer was an amazing talent.

Gene Eliza Tierney (November 19, 1920 – November 6, 1991) was an American film and stage actress. Acclaimed as a great beauty, she became established as a leading lady. Tierney was best known for her portrayal of the title character in the film Laura (1944), and was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress for her performance as Ellen Berent Harland in Leave Her to Heaven (1945).
Tierney's other roles include Martha Strable Van Cleve in Heaven Can Wait (1943), Isabel Bradley Maturin in The Razor's Edge (1946), Lucy Muir in The Ghost and Mrs. Muir (1947), Ann Sutton in Whirlpool (1949), Maggie Carleton McNulty in The Mating Season (1951), and Anne Scott in The Left Hand of God (1955).
Early life
Tierney was born in Brooklyn, New York, the daughter of Howard Sherwood Tierney and Belle Lavina Taylor. She was named after a beloved uncle, who died young. She had an elder brother, Howard Sherwood “Butch” Tierney, Jr., and a younger sister, Patricia “Pat” Tierney. Their father was a successful insurance broker of Irish descent, their mother a former physical education instructor.

There are elements of Maurice Ravel's 'Daphne et Chloe' in this, yes, for those who were wondering, and I did mix the two together. In this Otto Preminger directed film noir we meet some of the defining characters of the genre, and we view one of the best movies of the 40s. Despite the great script, to-a-tee acting, smoky atmosphere and moody cinematography, what really comes in to focus with this movie is its music. After all, if you look at most of the great movies, you will find a great score backing up the brilliance. This score is done by David Raksin. LAURA ~ Woody Herman (vocal) & his Orchestra ~ 1945~ Columbia Records #36785 LAURA was originally recorded as an instrumental and used in the 1944 film classic : "LAURA" , starring: Dana Andrews, Gene Tierney, & Vincent Price. In 1945 lyrics were added by Singer-Composer- Lyricist, Johnny Mercer, and was recorded in February of the same year by Woody Herman on the Columbia Records label. The film was based on a 1942 novel written by Vera Caspary, also titled " LAURA " . It should be noted that when Johnny Mercer wrote the lyrics to David Raksin's melody, he had never watched the film that the melody was used in and yet, his lyrics captured the feeling & tone of the film almost completely. Johnny Mercer was an amazing talent.

You can't will it away... In her autobiography "Self Portrait" she writes about having severe episodes of depression (causing irratic behaviour) that randomly descended on her. "Shock" treatments were administered which didn't help and just caused more problems. You know I have a hard time feeling sorry for a rich person that had every advantage in life. A lot of her problems were of her own making, and a lot of it was made up in her own mind. We all suffer tragedy and setbacks in our life but you can choose not to be a victim. Her story isn't any different than millions of other people in this world, it's all in how you deal with it.

Guy Women were NOT more beautiful then; it was all illusion. Back then women were totally controlled by studio bosses, on and OFF camera. The studio dictated every stitch of clothing, hair, make-up, plus their words were scripted. These women had studio photographers, PR folks, handlers, and arranged dates and marriages. Have you ever visited a tv or film set? Those "great looking" game show, sitcom, and soap opera sets are (in person) cheesy, shoddy, flimsy, tiny, and tacky; all designed to project an image just like the studio bosses projected the image of over-the-top beautiful women (and men). Sorry to burst your bubble!! IMO, women are more beautiful now.

She should have gotten that Oscar for that one but I think Joan Crawford got it for "Mildred Pierce" which was good too but...

Gene was my mother's favorite actress, too, and after watching "Leave Her to Heaven" and "Laura" with my mother, I could certainly see why. Not only was she stunningly beautiful, but she was convincing in her performances. She has now become one of my favorites, along with Bette Davis, Joan Crawford, and Barbara Stanwyck. I love those old classic movies. Too bad Gene's personal life was so full of pain. She didn't deserve that.

Gene's problems weren't made up. She had a mental illness which is something that no one is responsible for. It just happens and you're stuck with it. You can't will it away... In her autobiography "Self Portrait" she writes about having severe episodes of depression (causing irratic behaviour) that randomly descended on her. "Shock" treatments were administered which didn't help and just caused more problems. By her account, she suffered greatly and it is apparent that she did all she could to avoid being "a victim" (as you suggest)...

You know I have a hard time feeling sorry for a rich person that had every advantage in life. A lot of her problems were of her own making, and a lot of it was made up in her own mind. We all suffer tragedy and setbacks in our life but you can choose not to be a victim. Her story isn't any different than millions of other people in this world, it's all in how you deal with it.

Guy Women were NOT more beautiful then; it was all illusion. Back then women were totally controlled by studio bosses, on and OFF camera. The studio dictated every stitch of clothing, hair, make-up, plus their words were scripted. These women had studio photographers, PR folks, handlers, and arranged dates and marriages. Have you ever visited a tv or film set? Those "great looking" game show, sitcom, and soap opera sets are (in person) cheesy, shoddy, flimsy, tiny, and tacky; all designed to project an image just like the studio bosses projected the image of over-the-top beautiful women (and men). Sorry to burst your bubble!! IMO, women are more beautiful now.

"Leave her to Heaven" is the like "Play Misty For Me", "The Hand that Rocks the Cradle" and "Fatal Attraction" all rolled into one. I was stunned when I finally watched this riveting performance. She should have gotten that Oscar for that one but I think Joan Crawford got it for "Mildred Pierce" which was good too but...
