Downtown is the central business district of Seattle, Washington. It is fairly compact compared with other city centers on the West Coast of the United States because of its geographical situation. It is hemmed in on the north and east by hills, on the west by Elliott Bay, and on the south by reclaimed land that was once tidal flats. It is bounded on the north by Denny Way, beyond which are Lower Queen Anne (sometimes known as "Uptown"), Seattle Center, and South Lake Union; on the east by Broadway Avenue, beyond which is Capitol Hill to the northeast and the Central District to the east; on the south by Dearborn Avenue, beyond which is Sodo; and on the west by Elliott Bay, which is part of Puget Sound (an inlet of the Pacific Ocean). Belltown, Denny Triangle, the retail district, the West Edge, the financial district, the government district, Pioneer Square, Chinatown, Japantown, Little Saigon, and the western flank of First Hill west of Broadway consist of downtown Seattle's chief neighbourhoods. Near the center of downtown is the Metropolitan Tract, owned by the University of Washington, the location of the university's pre-1895 campus. Downtown is Seattle's finance hub, its commercial maritime hub, its centre of nightlife, and its centre of shopping. (The downtown shopping mall Westlake Center is connected to Seattle Center by way of a monorail). The area is also home to the landmark Pike Place Market, the oldest continually-operating farmer's market in the United States and the core of activity in the area.
Seattle (i/siˈætəl/) is a West Coast seaport city and the seat of King County. With an estimated 662,400 residents as of 2015, Seattle is the largest city in both the state of Washington and the Pacific Northwest region of North America. In July 2013 it was the fastest-growing major city in the United States, and remained in the top five in May 2015 with an annual growth rate of 2.1%. The Seattle metropolitan area of around 3.6 million inhabitants is the 15th largest metropolitan area in the United States. The city is situated on an isthmus between Puget Sound (an inlet of the Pacific Ocean) and Lake Washington, about 100 miles (160 km) south of the Canada–United States border. A major gateway for trade with Asia, Seattle is the third largest port in North America in terms of container handling as of 2015.
The Seattle area was previously inhabited by Native Americans for at least 4,000 years before the first permanent European settlers.Arthur A. Denny and his group of travelers, subsequently known as the Denny Party, arrived from Illinois via Portland, Oregon on the schooner Exact at Alki Point on November 13, 1851. The settlement was moved to the eastern shore of Elliott Bay and named "Seattle" in 1852, after Chief Si'ahl of the local Duwamish and Suquamish tribes.
Downtown is a term primarily used in North America by English speakers to refer to a city's core (or center) or central business district (CBD), often in a geographical, commercial, or communal sense. The term is not generally used in British English, whose speakers instead use the term city centre.
The term is thought to have been coined in New York City, where it was in use by the 1830s to refer to the original town at the southern tip of the island of Manhattan. As the town of New York grew into a city, the only direction it could grow on the island was toward the north, proceeding upriver from the original settlement (the "up" and "down" terminology in turn came from the customary map design in which up was north and down was south). Thus, anything north of the original town became known as "uptown" (Upper Manhattan), while the original town (which was also New York's only major center of business at the time) became known as "downtown" (Lower Manhattan).
During the late 19th century, the term was gradually adopted by cities across the United States and Canada to refer to the historical core of the city (which was most often the same as the commercial heart of the city). Notably, it was not included in dictionaries as late as the 1880s. But by the early 1900s, downtown was clearly established as the proper term in American English for a city's central business district.

Join the Matador Network as we explore Seattle from a local’s perspective. To get a sense of what it’s like to live in Seattle, and to see the Emerald City through the eyes of an insider, we tag along for a day in the life of Kirsten Gardner, a local tour guide who takes us on a hike and to a few of her favorit spots in the neighborhood of Ballard. Then, we follow local glass artist Preston Singletary through Pioneer Square, to grab coffee and check out some local public artworks. Finally, we’ll pop in to Green Lake for a visit with Chef Rachel Yang to see what makes Seattle a perfect place to visit with families. Each visit allows us to gain insight into why Seattle is the city with the perfect mix of both urban and the outdoor life.

A ride on Sound Transit's Central Link Light Rail to International District/Chinatown station from SeaTac Airport. We ride in car 110, in the middle of the train. Sound Transit's Central Link is an electrified tram-style Light Rail line from the University of Washington to Sea-Tac Airport, via Downtown Seattle. The line is energized at 1.5KV AC. An extension to Angle Lake from SeaTac is structurally complete, and due to open in September.
This video, lasting just under 30 minutes, was taken on April 28, 2014. It originated at the corner of NE 8th & Bellevue Way in Bellevue, Washington, crossing the 520 Evergreen Point floating bridge, through downtown Seattle and on to Seatac Airport car rental return. The video was captured by simply mounting a small point & shoot camera onto the dashboard with Velcro and it worked pretty well. Unfortunately, the camera wasn't zoomed in quite enough to eliminate the dashboard being in the video, but live and learn.
Recorded July 23, 2014 Things started off rainy on my visit to Seattle, but the skies cleared a bit and I was able to take a harbor cruise in Elliott Bay and enjoy the view from the top of the Space Needle. From: http://timvp.com
