Matthew Williamson

Matthew Williamson (born 23 October 1971) is a British fashion designer.

Early years

Williamson was born in Manchester and studied in Manchester at Loreto College until he was 17 years old. He then moved to London to attend school at Central Saint Martin's College of Art and Design, graduating in 1994.

Career

His eponymous fashion house was founded in February 1997. That same year, Williamson debuted his collection 'Electric Angels' at London Fashion Week.

His collections were displayed during New York Fashion week in 2002. His store at 28 Bruton Street, in Mayfair, London, followed in 2004.

In 2005, he launched his own perfume range and the following year he was appointed Creative Director at Emilio Pucci. In 2007, a runway show of his designs was incorporated into the video for Prince's song "Chelsea Rodgers" from his Planet Earth album. In 2007, the Design Museum, London, hosted a restrospective of his work entitled "Matthew Williamson – 10 years in Fashion".

In 2008, Williamson was awarded the "Red Carpet Designer" accolade at the British Fashion Awards where he has also received three nominations for Designer of the Year. In September 2008 Matthew Williamson returned to London full-time to focus fully on his own label's forthcoming ventures and expansion. He made a guest appearance on season 7 of Project Runway. The episode aired on 28 January 2010.

Fashion show

A fashion show is an event put on by a fashion designer to showcase his or her upcoming line of clothing during Fashion Week. Fashion shows debut every season, particularly the Spring/Summer and Fall/Winter seasons. This is where the latest fashion trends are made. The two most influential fashion weeks are Paris Fashion Week and New York Fashion Week, which are both semiannual events. Also, the Milan, London and Berlin are of global importance.

In a typical fashion show, models walk the catwalk dressed in the clothing created by the designer. The clothing is illuminated on the runway by the fashion show lighting. The order in which each model walks out wearing a specific outfit is usually planned in accordance to the statement that the designer wants to make about his or her collection. It is then up to the audience to not only try to understand what the designer is trying to say by the way the collection is being presented, but to also visually deconstruct each outfit and try to appreciate the detail and craftsmanship of every single piece.

Wayne McGregor

Wayne McGregor CBE (born 1970) is a British choreographer of contemporary modern dance. His work is known for its particular vocabulary of movement, for its integration of dance with film and visual art, and for its incorporation of computer technology and biological science. He is the Artistic Director of Wayne McGregor Random Dance, Resident Company at Sadler's Wells Theatre in London and the Resident Choreographer of The Royal Ballet, appointed 2006; He is Professor of Choreography at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance and holds an honorary doctor of science degree from Plymouth University. He was the government’s first Youth Dance Champion, appointed 2008. In 2004 McGregor was a Research Fellow in the Department of Experimental Psychology, University of Cambridge. His work continues to explore the relationship between movement and brain science.

McGregor has created new work for international companies including La Scala Theatre Ballet of Milan; Paris Opera Ballet; Nederlands Dans Theatre; San Francisco Ballet; Stuttgart Ballet; New York City Ballet; The Australian Ballet; and English National Ballet of London. He served as Movement Director for Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and choreographed music videos for Radiohead ("Lotus Flower") and Atoms for Peace ("Ingenue"). Woolf Works for The Royal Ballet was his first full-length piece for the company, drawing on the writings of Virginia Woolf with music by Max Richter. McGregor premiered Tree of Codes, a new contemporary ballet created in collaboration with artist Olafur Eliasson and producer/composer Jamie xx at the Manchester International Festival (which commissioned the work) on Friday 3 July 2015. Inspired by the Jonathan Safran Foer artwork of the same name, Tree of Codes featured dancers from his own company with soloists from the Paris Opera Ballet.
