Little Italy is a general name for an ethnic enclave populated primarily by Italians or people of Italian ancestry, usually in an urban neighborhood. The concept of "Little Italy" holds many different aspects of the Italian culture. There are shops selling Italian goods as well as Italian restaurants lining the streets. A "Little Italy" strives essentially to have a version of the country of Italy placed in the middle of a big non-Italian city. This sort of enclave is often the result of periods of immigration in the past, during which people of the same culture settled together in certain areas. As cities modernized and grew, these areas became known for their ethnic associations, and towns like "Little Italy" blossomed, becoming the icons they are today.

Italy (i/ˈɪtəli/; Italian: Italia [iˈtaːlja]), officially the Italian Republic (Italian: Repubblica Italiana), is a unitary parliamentary republic in Europe. Italy covers an area of 301,338 km2 (116,347 sq mi) and has a largely Mediterranean and temperate climate; due to its shape, it is often referred to in Italy as lo Stivale (the Boot). With 61 million inhabitants, it is the 4th most populous EU member state. Located in the heart of the Mediterranean Sea, Italy shares open land borders with France, Switzerland, Austria, Slovenia, San Marino and Vatican City.
Since ancient times, Greeks, Etruscans and Celts have inhabited the south, centre and north of the Italian Peninsula respectively. Rome ultimately emerged as the dominant power, conquering much of the ancient world and becoming the leading cultural, political, and religious centre of Western civilisation. The legacy of the Roman Empire is widespread and can be observed in the global distribution of civilian law, Republican governments, Christianity and the latin script.
Little is a surname in the English language. The name is ultimately derived from the Middle English littel, and the Old English lȳtel, which mean "little". In some cases the name was originally a nickname for a little man. In other cases, the name was used to distinguish the younger of two bearers of the same personal name. Early records of the name include: Litle, in 972; Litle, in about 1095; and le Lytle, in 1296. The surname has absorbed several non English-language surnames. For example, Little is sometimes a translation of the Irish Ó Beagáin, meaning "descendant of Beagán". Little can also be a translation of the French Petit and Lepetit, as well as other surnames in various languages with the same meaning ("little"), especially the German name Klein during World War II.

Domenico Modugno (Italian pronunciation: [doˈmeːniko moˈduɲɲo]; 9 January 1928 – 6 August 1994) was an Italian singer, songwriter, actor, guitarist, and later in life, a member of the Italian Parliament. He is known for his 1958 international hit song "Nel blu dipinto di blu". He is considered the first Italian cantautore.
The youngest of four children, Modugno was born at Polignano a Mare, in the province of Bari (Apulia), on 9 January 1928. His father, Vito Cosimo Modugno, was a municipal police commander, while his mother, Pasqua Lorusso, was a housewife.
At the age of 9, his family moved to San Pietro Vernotico, in the Province of Brindisi, where his father was transferred for a new job position. Here Domenico attended primary school and learned San Pietro Vernotico's dialect, which belongs to the linguistic area of Lecce's dialect, similar to Sicilian. He attended secondary school in Lecce.
From a young age he wanted to become an actor and in 1951, after his military service, he enrolled in an acting school.

The following information is from nytmstr. I think he is correct about what Little Italy has become. It is sad, but true. Little Italy has degraded into a tourist trap and yuppie slum. My family came from Italy and settled in Little Italy and didn't move out until the early 1990's. You will never understand or get to see the real Little Italy in Manhattan because it doesn't exist and hasn't in many years. Gone are the old ladies taking numbers, or the women that used to set up on "their" corner with a pot of gravy/sauce loaded with pork skin, beef or pork braciole, sausage from a real pork store and meatballs with loaves of bread to make sandwiches with or you would get any of those meats for a couple of dollars to snack on on your way home! No more real neighborhood people that looked...

Can't you hear the parade?
Somebody's callin' the name
They're on the sidewalk
And all the people turn their heads to see
Ah mama, am I holding
On to the wings of a prayer
Waitin' for Rosie
Tell me do you think she cares?
Ah, dancin' in the streets, in little Italy
Ah, they're all dancin' in the streets, in little Italy
I'm an old woman
And your old enough to live your own life
But stay out of the barrels
The boys are seein' you with the clowns
Ah but Rosie
She's gotta rainbow 'round her shoulder
You better not lose her
Wild flowers make her heart sing
Ah, they're dancin' in the streets, in little Italy
Ah, they're are dancin' in the streets, in little Italy
Ah, they're all dancin' in the streets, in little Italy
