Haiti (i/ˈheɪti/; French: Haïti [a.iti]; Haitian Creole: Ayiti [ajiti]), officially the Republic of Haiti (French: République d'Haïti; Haitian Creole: Repiblik Ayiti), is a country in the western hemisphere, and is located on the island of Hispaniola, in the Greater Antilles archipelago of the Caribbean. It occupies the western three-eighths of the island which it shares with the Dominican Republic. Haiti is 27,750 square kilometres (10,714 sq mi) in size and has an estimated 10.6 million people, making it the most populous country in the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and the third-most populous country in the Caribbean as a whole.
Originally inhabited by the indigenous Taíno people, Europeans first became aware of the island on December 5, 1492 during the first voyage of Christopher Columbus across the Atlantic. When Columbus first landed in Haiti, he had thought he had found India or Asia. Deciding to establish the first settlement in the area, a contingent of men were left at an outpost christened La Navidad because of the wreck to their sunken flagship, the Santa Maria, that occurred at Christmas, north of what is now Limonade. The island was named Hispaniola and claimed by Spain, which ruled until the early 17th century. Competing claims and settlements by the French led to the western portion of the island being ceded to France, which named it Saint-Domingue. The development of sugarcane plantations, worked by slaves brought from Africa, led to the colony being among the most lucrative in the world.

A few miles outside Port-au-Prince is a government-established camp for displaced people — Camp Corail, the only "official" camp in Haiti. Rows and rows of neatly spaced tents provide shelter for thousands of people. But just past Corail, a more "organic" community has sprouted. Nearly 100,000 squatters have taken things into their own hands and taken to the hills.
I was asked to direct a charity video to help the earthquake victims in Haiti. I wanted to connect the artists with the actual people of Haiti, so I designed the clapping of their hands to simulate the white rubble in all the photos. Then it was a matter of actually going to Haiti for the people to return the claps. Close after the earthquake, I flew into the Dominican Republic on my own dime. Haiti was closed off to visitors, so I bribed my way through the border and crossed into the devastation. With two friends, I carried everything I needed including a Canon 7D on my back. You have to understand that at this point I had no idea what I was going to shoot, or what I was going to see. It was a daunting task to drop yourself in the middle of nowhere and start shooting. But I felt it was i...
We get asked to visit a lot of Countries and many times it can become overwhelming. Communicating with new leaders, learning about new projects, praying about how we can support the work happening in each country….We’re still a relatively small ministry with limited resources so not being able to run through every open door can often become discouraging as well. For a little over two years we had been talking with the leaders at Hands and Feet about coming and blessing their kids with some new boards and ramps. When the opportunity finally presented itself we knew it was time to jump on it. This was the first time anyone from our team had ever been to Haiti. We knew through the media that Haiti was still in shambles from the earthquake in 2010 but had no idea of its extent. Through our sh...
The villagers of Luben are reliant on the Artibonite river—it's their only hope for survival. But they were literally surrounded by death when cholera-contaminated waters flooded the rice fields surrounding their village. Operation Blessing came to them with a solution that saved their village from further contamination.
JEAN-RONEL NOEL My name is Jean Noel. I am the cofounder of ENERSA. My partner and I, Alex Georges, we started in my garage six, seven years ago, making small experiments with the solar panels. JEAN-RONEL NOEL We wanted to be part of something special, and because both of us grew up in Haiti, so we know what the situation is. We have plenty of sunshine, so is there a way that you can harvest energy from the sun and to resolve the energy problem? So this is something that is completely different, and it was something completely new. At the beginning almost everybody thought, “Those guys are really crazy. They don’t have nothing to do? Anonymous #opDisposableSouls. Supporting the documentary: "Disposable Souls-The True story of 13 men in Haiti." On August 5, 1964, 13 men invaded Haiti. My name is Roland Chassagne. My film «Disposable Souls» is about 13 men attempting to overthrow an entire country amidst betrayal and the ensuing terrible consequences. My parents were born in the town of Jeremie, a French-Haitian enclave on the Western side of the Island. Historically, Jeremie was known as the town of artists and poets and also had the highest interracial population in the country. My father, while still in Haiti, had managed the campaign of Francois Duvalier’s (“Papa Doc”) chief opponent, Louis Dejoie, in the election that brought Francois Duvalier to power. EXCELLENT BREAKING NEWS COVERAGE OF THE HAITIAN EARTHQUAKE AND ITS AFTERMATH Under terrible conditions, Matt Frei and Matthew Price covered Haiti in the aftermath of the January 2010 earthquake with solid and compassionate reporting. The reporters and their crew demonstrated great courage walking into the wreckage and scenes of unrest to get the story. With sober resolve on the ground, they accurately captured the unfolding tragedy. As a result viewers saw new angles of the news that were not reported elsewhere; intensely personal stories arising out of a catastrophe and told through the eyes of Haitians. Careful writing and shrewd observation in the reporting bolstered the strong images of a country in chaos. Rome Hartman, executive producer; Ian Sherwood, producer; Peter Murtaugh, K...

FIGHTING POVERTY IS BIG BUSINESS. BUT WHO PROFITS THE MOST? Website: www.PovertyINC.org Twitter: #PovertyINC “I see multiple colonial governors,” says Ghanaian software entrepreneur Herman Chinery-Hesse of the international development establishment in Africa. “We are held captive by the donor community.” The West has positioned itself as the protagonist of development, giving rise to a vast multi-billion dollar poverty industry — the business of doing good has never been better. Yet the results have been mixed, in some cases even catastrophic, and leaders in the developing world are growing increasingly vocal in calling for change. Robin of Shoreditch is an anonymous group of creative outlaws looking to take from the rich and give to the poor. We’re providing every one of Brand Z’s Top 100 brands with a creative idea that can make a difference to their company. In return, all we ask for is 1/10,000,000 (that’s one ten-millionth) of the value of their brand as a fee. We’ll then send on 100% of that fee to the continued relief efforts in Haiti. Visit www.blog.robinofshoreditch.com to see how we're getting on. How it works 1. We’ve taken the Top 100 brands in Brand Z’s 2009 report. For each one, we’ve come up with what we suspect might be a business problem they’re facing. 2. We come up with a creative solution to that problem. Because we’re just providing the ideas and not the production, we’re not constricted by...

Streethearts (501c3) was founded with the mission of providing a safe haven for the hundreds of street children in Cap-Haitien, Haiti. It began as a side project, to befriend and buildup the kids’ sense of self. First, there were small incentive programs, based around athletics and rewards for participation. Founder, Linsey Jorgenson (based out of Haiti), used this as a way to begin tracking the kids, to check-in on their safety and whereabouts. As her bond with her street family grew, so did the number of kids she was looking after. All those connections began to reveal a situation that was just too big to aid part-time, and too complicated to not warrant her full attention. The passion and need turned into the Streethearts organization, in October of 2012. She took this project head-on w...

Can one man's unlikely tourism plan help turn around the country's economy?
Haiti is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere and more than 99% of Haitian are black people. Haiti has its heyday in the 18C during French colonial era. Due to the rapid expansion of sugar and coffee plantation, a lot of Africans were brought here to fulfil the labour need for farming. Then it was the richest colony in the New World. The harsh treatment to the slaves initiated a lot of resistance and revolution. Haiti is the only country succeed in black revolution and also the first black republic, which was formed in 1804, in the world. After the disastrous earthquake in 2010, Haiti is now on the way recovered from the damages and basic infrastructure is functioned. However Haiti still need to face the poverty problem as before and it was a long long way to go. Haiti is not an ea...

A year ago, as I was in the middle of a new travelling-phase in my life, discovering a lot of magical places in the world, I realised that back home there were so many of them I didn't know. This summer'14 , with a few friends from college and some family members, we rented a car and discovered some of the beauties this Caribbean island holds. I discovered so many things not only about those magical places but also about the amazing people that live around them and this with other eyes, being surrounded by foreigners. I hope that through this video of my friends and I, you will be able to get a glimpse of those magic sites in Haiti and in the Dominican Republic and I hope that it will drive you to want to know this island and discover its treasures just like we did. Enjoy !!!!!!!!! - MJ...

On August, 17, 2016, Emmanuel Altenor made his first journey to Haiti. He took in as many images and experienced as much as he could, and the result of that is this travel doc, Diaspora Come Home. This is Part 1 of three. Part 2 will feature the coastal spot, Leogane. Emmanuel hopes to inspire other Haitian diaspora to make the trip to Haiti. This will make us more effective in helping the country. The Haitian people are beyond welcoming, but Haiti is an absolutely beautiful country. Please visit.

Traveling from the DR to Haiti. About Me // I am 25, from Marietta, Georgia and I started this channel in 2013 in my final semester of my college. After graduating from Auburn University in Alabama I spent four months in Europe and tried my hand at vloging. You can watch the whole series here and forgive me for filming it on my iPhone. Right after traveling I moved to DC where I lived for two years. Last summer I backpacked through Central America and produced a 10 part vlog series about that as well. I currently am traveling on World Race. The World Race is an 11 month mission trip to 11 countries. I post videos almost every day, so subscribe and stay a while if you want to see more. - All filmed on a Canon S120, Canon G7x and Canon T3i. Thanks for watching, Julia

Haiti Travel Video Guide: Haiti is the poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere. Tourists who are unsettled by grinding poverty probably should visit elsewhere. However, for those with patience and an open mind, Haiti reveals a rich culture that is unique among post-colonial nations. It is extremely helpful when traveling in Haiti to have a local contact, through a church, a hotel, or just through making friends with someone. Experiences like dining locally, riding on a tap-tap, or strolling through one of the insanely crowded outdoor markets are great fun and very worth doing but are much safer and easier if you have a trusted Haitian to go along as a guide and interpreter. Haiti, mon pays
Wounded mother I'll never see
Ma famille, set me free
Throw my ashes into the sea
Mes cousins jamais nes
Hantent les nuits de Duvalier
Rien n'arrete nos espirits
Guns can't kill what soldiers can't see
In the forest we are hiding
Unmarked graves where flowers grow
Hear the soldiers angry yelling
In the river we will go
Tous les morts-nes forment une armee
Soon we will reclaim the earth
All the tears and all the bodies
Bring about our second birth
Haiti, never free
N'aie pas peur de sonner l'alarme
Tes enfants sont partis
