China, officially the People's Republic of China (PRC), is a sovereign state in East Asia. It is the world's most populous country, with a population of over 1.35 billion. The PRC is a one-party state governed by the Communist Party, with its seat of government in the capital city of Beijing. It exercises jurisdiction over 22 provinces; five autonomous regions; four direct-controlled municipalities (Beijing, Tianjin, Shanghai and Chongqing); two mostly self-governing special administrative regions (Hong Kong and Macau); and claims sovereignty over Taiwan.
Covering approximately 9.6 million square kilometers, China is the world's second-largest country by land area, and either the third or fourth-largest by total area, depending on the method of measurement. China's landscape is vast and diverse, ranging from forest steppes and the Gobi and Taklamakan deserts in the arid north to subtropical forests in the wetter south. The Himalaya, Karakoram, Pamir and Tian Shan mountain ranges separate China from South and Central Asia. The Yangtze and Yellow Rivers, the third- and sixth-longest in the world, run from the Tibetan Plateau to the densely populated eastern seaboard. China's coastline along the Pacific Ocean is 14,500 kilometres (9,000 mi) long, and is bounded by the Bohai, Yellow, East and South China Seas.
The Internet is the global system of interconnected mainframe, personal, and wireless computer networks that use the Internet protocol suite (TCP/IP) to link billions of devices worldwide. It is a network of networks that consists of millions of private, public, academic, business, and government networks of local to global scope, linked by a broad array of electronic, wireless, and optical networking technologies. The Internet carries an extensive range of information resources and services, such as the inter-linked hypertext documents and applications of the World Wide Web (WWW), electronic mail, Usenet newsgroups, telephony, and peer-to-peer networks for file sharing.
Although the Internet protocol suite has been used by academia and the military industrial complex since the early 1980s, rapid adoption of its use was driven by events of the late 1980s and 1990s such as more powerful and affordable computers, the advent of fiber optics, the popularization of HTTP and the Web browser, and a push towards opening the technology to commerce. Internet use grew rapidly in the West from the mid-1990s and from the late 1990s in the developing world. In the 20 years since 1995, Internet use has grown 100-times to reach over one third of the world population, leading to its services and technologies being incorporated into virtually every aspect of contemporary life. The impact of the Internet has been so immense that it has been referred to as the "8th continent".
Extra Credits is a video lesson series presented by game designer James Portnow, animator/narrator Daniel Floyd, and artists Allison Theus, Elisa "LeeLee" Scaldaferri, Scott DeWitt, and Dan Jones. The series of videos discuss issues pertinent to video games and game studies, particularly discussing issues concerning video game development, addressing the legitimacy of video games as art, and creating intellectual discourse on important issues in gaming culture.
The series was developed directly from a series of lecture videos by Floyd and Portnow, informally known as "Video Games And...", which ran sporadically from February 17, 2008 to April 16, 2010.
The series originally aired on The Escapist from July 28, 2010 to August 10, 2011, before being split off over a financial dispute. Between September 7, 2011 and December 31, 2013, the show aired on PATV, a distribution channel hosted by Penny Arcade, whose downsizing of partner services after the latter date was cited as the reason for the show's subsequent "move" to YouTube, where the show is currently aired. In addition, the episodes have been syndicated on many websites, including ScrewAttack and the creators' own EC Network.
The revenue of China's online gaming sector kept growing by around 30 percent annually over the past eight years, according to data revealed by the Ministry of Culture on Friday. Games produced in China accounted for more than 70 percent of the 133.1 billion yuan (about 20 billion U.S. dollars) generated by the sector in 2015, according to the ministry. Online gaming is growing rapidly in China. Research by Goldman Sachs shows that games are the biggest component of media spending by Chinese consumers, reaching $14.3 billion in 2013. That's helped Chinese games publishers rise to the top, with many games being played on smartphones. Developer Tencent in particular has a strong hold on the market. CGTN's Yang Chengxi has details.
The world's most populous nation also has the world's largest number of internet users. At least 338 million people use the internet in China, and more than half of them are online gamers. But with the gaming industry expanding, the government is finding it harder to maintain control. Melissa Chan reports.
China was the first country to recognize internet addiction as a clinical disorder. It has hundreds of rehab camps where concerned parents can send their web-dependent kids, who don’t always go willingly. The path to recovery isn’t easy but it is most effective, if the parents walk it with them. WATCH PART 5 NOW - http://bit.ly/eSports-P5 Today, there are more people in the world who play the online multiplayer battle game League of Legends than there are people who live in France. We wanted to see how humanity got to this point, so VICE host Matt Shea flew to South Korea, a country where competitive gaming—also known as eSports—can either make you rich and famous or land you in rehab. In Part Four, a group of college gamers take us on a night out in Seoul, where we stop by at the city's famous PC cafés before heading to its biggest superclub—an experience that blows the mind of one of the gamers, who is a nightclub first-timer. Through the haze of a soju hangover, we get invited behind the scenes of a Korean gaming house. Later that evening, we meet an e-athlete who got caught ...

Video games in China is a massive industry and pastime that includes the production, sale, import/export, and playing of video games. China is the largest and highest grossing (revenues) video game market in the world, since 2015. The landscape of the topic is strongly shaped by China's average income level, rampant software piracy, and governmental measures to control game content and playing times. In 2011, China's PC game sector was worth $6 billion, the largest in the world. Arcade games are also a thriving industry in China. Console games were banned from the country in 2000, but the ban was lifted in July 2015. The Gaming industry is massive in the West at the moment, but how is the gaming scene in China, and how does it differ from the West? Living in China for so long, we would ...
China has implemented new rules designed to limit the number of hours minors can play games online. Anyone under 18 must have their ID verified by the government before playing in one of the country's popular internet cafes. (Dec. 5)
The internet business model was once based on advertising. Ding Lei, CEO of NetEase, Inc. talks with IMD President Dominique Turpin at the 17th Nikkei Global Management Forum. The two discuss how NetEase has found success in the online industry through gaming and other internet technologies.

http://show.thoughtfulchina.com China is one of the largest and most active markets for online and mobile gaming, with revenue expected to grow 93% to $2.9 billion in 2014 and reach $7.7 billion by 2018. But little of that revenue is coming from brand owners. Advertisers have been slow to find ways to connect with gamers and there are few examples of good integrations to date. Find out why this week on “Thoughtful China” from Clement Tsang, Patrick Wheeler, Graham Fink, Kevin Gentle and Liam Winston, who will share insights about how advertisers should be looking at online games to engage with China’s massive community of gamers and what’s holding the industry back.
Ge Jin, PhD candidate in Communication at UCSD, is researching areas of the computer gaming culture in China, real money trade in online games and documentary filmmaking. In China, a new kind of factory hires people to play online games like World of Warcraft and Lineage and produce in-game currency, equipment, high-level characters and other virtual goods. Affluent gamers from Korea, Europe and America pay real money for these virtual goods to quickly raise their status in games. Jin's research takes a close look at how these factories, commonly known as "gold farms", organize the production and distribution of virtual goods.
