Tim Garland (born 19 October 1966) is a British jazz saxophonist, composer and band-leader. He is also known for his innovative bass clarinet playing and for his prolific output as composer, blurring the boundaries between modern jazz and classical concert music.
He first entered the jazz scene playing alongside Ronnie Scott in a “two tenor” quintet, before quickly establishing himself as a leader, drawing on influences from around the world including classical and flamenco.
As a performer, he has worked widely both in Britain and elsewhere in the world, with particular highlights being a continuing collaboration with Chick Corea and his four-year association with Bill Bruford.
As composer, he has fulfilled commissions from the LSO, the Northern Sinfonia, BBC Concert Orchestra and Westminster Abbey Choir, as well as several small and large jazz-based ensembles. In 2013 he premiered his suite 'Songs to The North Sky'for jazz trio and orchestra, written in 2012 for the trio Lighthouse with Northern Sinfonia and subsequently performed by them and also by the London Sinfonia.
A garland is a decorative wreath or cord, used at festive occasions, which can be hung round a person's neck, or on inanimate objects like Christmas trees. Originally garlands were made of flowers or leaves.
From the French "guirlande", itself from the Italian "ghirlanda", a braid.
Garland created from the daisy flower, generally as a children's game, is called a daisy chain. One method of creating a daisy chain is as follows: daisies are picked and a hole is made towards the base of the stem, generally by piercing with fingernails or tying a knot. The stem of the next flower can be threaded through until stopped by the head of the flower. By repeating this with many daisies, it is possible to build up long chains and to form them into simple bracelets and necklaces.

Tim Garland dropped by Sage Gateshead last week to talk about his upcoming gig in Sage Two (21 October 2016) and reminisced about being one of the first musicians to record in Sage One! http://sagegateshead.com/event/tim-garland-quartet40243/
Tim is an amazing composer as well as a beautiful player. He was on tour with the Storms/Nocturnes Trio (featuring Geoffrey Keezer and Joe Locke) when I popped over to Tim's house to get the interview. As well as his own wonderful projects Tim is a current member of Chick Corea's band Vigil. Tim came to Brighton Jazz School to give a workshop/masterclass last year. Check out this fascinating interview:

Jazz vibraphonist Joe Locke and pianist Geoffrey Keezer have worked together for almost 20 years. The two friends are like kindred spirits and have backed each other in a variety of musical projects. Like the upcoming Storms/Nocturnes project featuring saxophonist Tim Garland. The trio formed during the late 1990’s and are about to reunite for a world tour which begins this spring. Garland, who’s best known for playing with pianist Chick Corea’s band Origin, brings his high octane tenor and soprano saxophone playing with Joe’s laid-back and fresh vibraphone style along with Geoffrey’s analytical and fluid piano playing. The three different musical and personal personalities is what makes Storms/Nocturnes a rich and innovative extension of chamber music as well as jazz. Romance and love ar...
