Diana Jean Krall, OC, OBC (born November 16, 1964) is a Canadian jazz pianist and singer, known for her contralto vocals. She has sold more than 6 million albums in the US and over 15 million worldwide. On December 11, 2009, Billboard magazine named her the second Jazz artist of the 2000–09 decade, establishing her as one of the best-selling artists of her time.
Krall is the only jazz singer to have eight albums debuting at the top of the Billboard Jazz Albums. To date, she has won five Grammy Awards and eight Juno Awards. She has also earned nine gold, three platinum, and seven multi-platinum albums.
Krall was born on November 16, 1964, in Nanaimo, British Columbia, Canada, the daughter of Adella A. (née Wende), an elementary school teacher, and Stephen James "Jim" Krall, an accountant. Her father played piano at home and her mother sang in a community choir. She was playing piano herself at the age of four and playing jazz in a local restaurant at 15. She went to the Berklee College of Music in Boston on a scholarship before going to Los Angeles to play jazz. She returned to Canada to release her first album in 1993.
Benjamin David "Benny" Goodman (May 30, 1909 – June 13, 1986) was an American jazz and swing musician, clarinetist and bandleader, known as the "King of Swing".
In the mid-1930s, Benny Goodman led one of the most popular musical groups in America. His concert at Carnegie Hall in New York City on January 16, 1938, is described by critic Bruce Eder as "the single most important jazz or popular music concert in history: jazz's 'coming out' party to the world of 'respectable' music."
Goodman's bands launched the careers of many major names in jazz. During an era of segregation he also led one of the first well-known integrated jazz groups. Goodman continued to perform to nearly the end of his life, while exploring an interest in classical music.
Goodman was born in Chicago, the ninth of twelve children of poor Jewish immigrants from the lands ruled by the Russian Empire. His father, David Goodman (1873–1926), came to America in 1892 from Warsaw in the partitioned Poland, and became a tailor. His mother, Dora née Grisinsky (1873–1964), came from Kaunas, Lithuania. His parents met in Baltimore, Maryland, and moved to Chicago before Benny was born. They lived in the Maxwell Street neighborhood.
Marilyn Pauline Novak, professionally known as Kim Novak (born February 13, 1933), is a retired American film and television actress.
She began her career in 1954 after signing with Columbia Pictures. There, she became a successful actress, starring in a string of movies, among them the critically acclaimed Picnic (1955). She later starred in such popular successes as The Man with the Golden Arm (1955) and Pal Joey (1957). However, she is perhaps best known today for her "dual role" as both Judy Barton and Madeleine Elster in Alfred Hitchcock's classic thriller Vertigo (1958). Novak was popular in box office popularity polls, and she starred opposite several top leading men of the era, including James Stewart, William Holden, Frank Sinatra, Tyrone Power, and Kirk Douglas.
Although still young, her career declined in the early 1960s, and after several years in a series of lackluster films, she withdrew from acting in 1966. She has only sporadically returned since. She later returned to the screen in The Mirror Crack'd (1980), and had a regular role on the prime time series Falcon Crest (1986–87). After a disappointing experience during the filming of Liebestraum (1991), she has permanently retired from acting, citing she has no desire to return.
William Holden (April 17, 1918 – November 12, 1981) was an American actor who was one of the biggest box office draws of the 1950s through the 1970s. He won the Academy Award for Best Actor in 1953 for his role in Stalag 17, and a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor for his role in the 1973 television film The Blue Knight.
Holden starred in some of Hollywood's most popular and critically acclaimed films, including such blockbusters as Sunset Boulevard, Sabrina, The Bridge on the River Kwai, The Wild Bunch, Picnic, The Towering Inferno, and Network. He was named one of the "Top 10 Stars of the Year" six times (1954–1958, 1961), and appeared as 25th on the American Film Institute's list of 25 greatest male stars of Classic Hollywood Cinema.
Holden was born William Franklin Beedle, Jr. in O'Fallon, Illinois, the son of Mary Blanche (née Ball; 1898-1990), a schoolteacher, and William Franklin Beedle, Sr. (1891-1967), an industrial chemist. He had two younger brothers, Robert and Richard. Holden's paternal great-grandmother, Rebecca Westfield, was born in England in 1817, while some of his mother's ancestors settled in Virginia's Lancaster County after emigrating from England in the 17th century. His younger brother, Robert W. "Bobbie" Beedle, became a U.S. Navy fighter pilot and was killed in action in World War II, over New Ireland, on January 5, 1944.

Morris Stoloff was a musical composer who worked as a musical director at Columbia Pictures from 1936 to 1962. He won 3 Oscars for best scores, for Cover Girl, The Jolson Story, and Song Without End, and was nominated 14 other times. Stoloff was one of the first to combine music from a motion picture and release as a soundtrack album. These songs were featured in the movie Picnic starring William Holden and Kim Novak. William Holden & Kim Novak dance, from the movie "Picnic." I love this scene from the movie "Picnic" from director Josh Logan, released in 1955, based on the play by William Inge. I've always identified, for whatever reason, with the character Hal Carter that Holden played in this film. So many great lines in "Picnic." "You don't love someone because they're perfect, Mom." Who hasn't thought that at one time or another in their lives? William Holden and Kim Novak were great in this, even though Holden thought he was too old to play the part of Hal. I heard he had to drink quite a bit to get up the nerve to do the "Moonglow" dancing scene in this clip. So memorable. So perfect. This clip appears courtesy of BFM Digital and IODA. The movie "Picnic" is owned and licensed by B...
Billie Holiday (April 7, 1915 - July 17, 1959) was an american jazz singer and songwriter. Nicknamed "Lady Day" by her friend and musical partner Lester Young, Billie Holiday had a seminal influence on jazz and pop singing.
You know that I'll be singing, when the morning comes
Cause every time I fall asleep, I wake up alone
And my voice is dying, I can barely say a word
So I'll just drive away
And oh oh
I'd like to try and find a way
To take this all away with me
Holding out not giving in
I used to try to find the answers
But I know, now that I don't really care
Hey, I'm just cool with anything
We could get away, I don't need to get away
Today the phone hasn't rang at all
But I like it better when they don't call
