Gut flora or, more appropriately, gut microbiota, consists of a complex community of microorganisms that live in the digestive tracts of animals. The gut microbiota comprises the largest and most diverse reservoir of mutualistic microorganisms associated with animals. In this context gut is synonymous with intestinal, and flora with microbiota and microflora. An associated term, sometimes used interchangeably with gut microbiota, is gut microbiome, which refers to the aggregate of all the genomes of gut microbiota.
Gut microorganisms benefit the host by collecting the energy from the fermentation of undigested carbohydrates and the subsequent absorption of short-chain fatty acids. The most important of these fatty acids are butyrates, metabolised by the colonic epithelium; propionates by the liver; and acetates by the muscle tissue. Intestinal bacteria also play a role in synthesizing vitamin B and vitamin K as well as metabolizing bile acids, sterols and xenobiotics. The metabolic activities performed by these bacteria resemble those of an organ, leading some to liken gut bacteria to a "forgotten" organ. It is estimated that these gut flora have around a hundred times as many genes in aggregate as there are in the human genome.
Bacteria (i/bækˈtɪəriə/; singular: bacterium) constitute a large domain of prokaryotic microorganisms. Typically a few micrometres in length, bacteria have a number of shapes, ranging from spheres to rods and spirals. Bacteria were among the first life forms to appear on Earth, and are present in most of its habitats. Bacteria inhabit soil, water, acidic hot springs, radioactive waste, and the deep portions of Earth's crust. Bacteria also live in symbiotic and parasitic relationships with plants and animals. They are also known to have flourished in manned spacecraft.
There are typically 40 million bacterial cells in a gram of soil and a million bacterial cells in a millilitre of fresh water. There are approximately 5×1030 bacteria on Earth, forming a biomass which exceeds that of all plants and animals. Bacteria are vital in recycling nutrients, with many of the stages in nutrient cycles dependent on these organisms, such as the fixation of nitrogen from the atmosphere and putrefaction. In the biological communities surrounding hydrothermal vents and cold seeps, bacteria provide the nutrients needed to sustain life by converting dissolved compounds, such as hydrogen sulphide and methane, to energy. On 17 March 2013, researchers reported data that suggested bacterial life forms thrive in the Mariana Trench, which with a depth of up to 11 kilometres is the deepest part of the Earth's oceans. Other researchers reported related studies that microbes thrive inside rocks up to 580 metres below the sea floor under 2.6 kilometres of ocean off the coast of the northwestern United States. According to one of the researchers, "You can find microbes everywhere — they're extremely adaptable to conditions, and survive wherever they are."
Mental health is a level of psychological well-being, or an absence of a mental disorder; it is the "psychological state of someone who is functioning at a satisfactory level of emotional and behavioral adjustment". From the perspective of positive psychology or holism, mental health may include an individual's ability to enjoy life, and create a balance between life activities and efforts to achieve psychological resilience. According to World Health Organization (WHO) mental health includes "subjective well-being, perceived self-efficacy, autonomy, competence, intergenerational dependence, and self-actualization of one's intellectual and emotional potential, among others." WHO further states that the well-being of an individual is encompassed in the realization of their abilities, coping with normal stresses of life, productive work and contribution to their community. However, cultural differences, subjective assessments, and competing professional theories all affect how "mental health" is defined.

Prof. Simon Carding, Leader of the Gut Health and Food Safety Research Programme, Institute of Food Research and Norwich Medical School at the University of East Anglia, describes our current understanding of the human gut and its relationship with its human host and introduce the provocative proposal that gut microbes influence when, what and how often we eat and whether we stay healthy or succumb to disease.
Jeroen Raes is a bionaut, he researches the human microbiome. What he's discovered in his lab at the Flanders Institute of Biology could herald a major breakthrough not just in gastro-intestinal medicine, but in our fundamental knowledge of the human biology. It turns out that there are only three different types of gut bacteria and, just like blood groups, the three types are totally independent of race, sex, age or diet. Such a baffling finding leads to more research of course and Raes is currently testing his idea on a larger group . The implications for Crohn's Disease or obesity could be dramatic. http://www.tedxbrussels.eu In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. Dr. Collen is not sure that obesity is an evolutionary process, and considers the possibility that it may be a pathological process. 16:08 The Role of Our Gut Bacteria: Our gut bacteria act as an intermediary between us and our environment. We cannot change our g...
What you will discover: Gut health and gut bacteria are the most overlooked elements of hormonal balance (includes menopause, thyroid issues, estrogen excess). The microbiome is now considered an endocrine organ, some consider it even more powerful than the other endocrine glands - it controls the production and inhibit or support hormonal balance. You can’t get far in your healing if you don’t fix the gut microbiome. Kiran covers how bacteria impact these hormones: serotonin (and its role), dopamine (and its role), norephinephrine. Correlation of between the gut micro biome and depression. How the gut bacteria impact estrogens (hint: the gut produces all three estrogens), promotes the levels of estriol (aka E3, the protective estrogen) and helps with reducing symptoms of menopause...
http://powerhealthtalk.com Today we will be discussing new scientific articles explaining the relationship between alterations in gut bacteria and the development of Eczema (Atopic Dermatitis). While we are aware that Eczema can be a multifactorial illness that is sometimes triggered by environmental sensitivities, the newest data is suggesting that these hyperactive immune responses are secondary at least in part due to inflammation at the gastrointestinal interface. A webinar for clinicians about the gut-brain connection. Presented by The CAN-BIND Program (www.canbind.ca), and lead by Dr. Jane Foster, Associate Professor at McMaster University.
Dr. Tom O'Bryan discusses the impact of antibiotics on your microbiome and how to restore gut flora and intestinal health after your round of antibiotic treatment. Dr. Tom lists pre-biotic foods and recipes that will help. Watch as he discusses his 4 week protocol for restoring intestinal bacteria. Special note for parents: There are several points that Dr. Tom makes about children and antibiotic use that you should listen to. Be sure to listen through to the apple sauce recipe. Kids love it and the pectin really helps! Functional Medicine expert Dr. Jill Carnahan discusses advanced strategies to restore gut health.
This talk will describe differences in gut bacteria in children with ASD vs. controls. It will also discuss the importance of diet, with a focus on dietary fiber, on the formation of short-chain fatty acids, which are the primary food source for the cells of the colon. Thus, fiber intake is very important for colonic health. It will also discuss the importance of essential fatty acids re. gut health. Finally, there will be a discussion of the role of probiotics and fecal transplants for improving gut health, as well as new results on increased toxic metals in children with ASD vs. controls, and a very strong correlation with certain autism symptoms.
Les Dethlefsen comes on Bulletproof Radio today to discuss recent discoveries about the microbiota, when you should take pre and probiotics, hacking the harmful effects that antibiotics have on our gut flora, and how a fecal transplant can save your life. Les Dethlefsen, Ph.D., is a staff scientist at the Relman labs at Stanford. Since joining the lab in 2004, his work has been focused on the temporal dynamics of the gut microbiota. Les has an undergraduate double major in physics and molecular biology. He earned his Ph.D. in both Microbiology and Ecology/Evolutionary Biology from Michigan State. His current study, ‘Dynamics of the Human Microbiota,’ is looking for participants. Enjoy the show! Resources: Pseudomonas aeruginosa - http://www.cdc.gov/hai/organisms/pseudomonas.html Mic...

Lift us up with the white crows, please
Make a record for the mud, there are no streets
Please don't feed the beast
Promises of peace
No keys to the cage
Ice age too late to call, kill the will and fill the
colon
Vowels I swallow
See in you in the gallows
Or see you in the shallows
Where I stay so dark can't see my hand in front of my
face
Then again I can't feel my gut
And when I hit the concrete I didn't even feel a thing
I don't feel like singing, I feel like murdering a king
Good old way, town square with no Napoleons present
Only the natural law, every stroke sovereign
My hardened heart sucks ammos in
Send the men to judge a man who doesn't even breathe
the same air as them
The US mint, the zip codes, the clean pants, the well
groomed
The perfect stance to hold and cigarette
In the cancer ward they'll be no time for tongues tied
Hot wired empty coffins riding off on shrunken horses
Empty voices rinding all through the saloon
You wanna dine with the devil?
You're gonna need a long spoon
This is the salt in the water cooler
This is where fool gold goes when it dies
This is the doctor gone shopping
This is the monkey with the walking stick
This is for all the bleeding rocks
This is for all the sleeping clocks
This is for the grain of sand that blinds a child so he
can join a crowd
No goals, no gold
Streets paved with hot coals
Lost souls go to drown in inhuman human holes
It's me and my pendulum, we out for blood
That's dry the day it hits the needle
This is where I learned to play the smallest violin
Out in the woods with crickets
You can pile us in or size us up, it's madness in a cup
Fly in the soup can't sing the blues
Nor can I approve of the past
We already through the looking glass
Where dust is born
All the facts resent us too
And so on fire, keep on throwing them toothpicks
Wake up smothered
My mind been gone since Naam
Before I was born, I was napalm
Before I was napalm, I was C4
Once I was a wheel, now I'm steel
When everything's a plenty, nothing is real
There's sleep to loose
A single set of tracks through the sands
The planet stirs
We've no use for plans in hur
We've no use for hands no more
We've no use for friends no more
Sit in the city and watch the city devour us all
Shiva's gone shopping
Mother Gia's gone shitting
A hundred light years and running
I lost my Obama button
Good bacteria fights good bacteria
