Iraqi officials say a car bombing at a popular ice cream shop in Baghdad killed at least 10 and wounded dozens. Hospital and police officials say the blast happened late Monday night, just days into the holy month of Ramadan when Muslims fast during daylight hours. The officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity in line with regulations, said the blast in central Baghdad was caused by a parked car. No group immediately claimed responsibility for the blast.

Two car bombs ripped through Baghdad on Tuesday killing at least 27 people
16 died in an ISIS attack on an ice cream shop that was packed with children
11 more died after a second device detonated near a government building
A total of 100 people are thought to have been wounded in the bombings.
At least 27 people have been killed and more than 100 wounded after two car bombs ripped through Baghdad, including one that targeted an ice cream parlour.
Sixteen people died in the first blast as ISIS militants detonated a car bomb outside an ice cream shop as it was packed with women and children breaking their Ramadan fast shortly after midnight on Tuesday.
A few hours later a second bomb the exploded by a government-run pension officer near the city's Al-Shuhada Bridge, killing a further 11 people.
More than 100 people are thought to have been wounded in the two attacks in total.

Baghdad
Baghdad (Arabic: بغداد ,بغداد Kurdish: Bexda, Iraqi pronunciation: [bɐʁˈd̪ɑːd̪]) is the capital of the Republic of Iraq. The population of Baghdad, as of 2011, is approximately 7,216,040, making it the largest city in Iraq, the second largest city in the Arab world (after Cairo, Egypt), and the second largest city in Western Asia (after Tehran, Iran). According to the government, the population of the country has reached 35 million, with 9 million in the capital.
Located along the Tigris River, the city was founded in the 8th century and became the capital of the Abbasid Caliphate. Within a short time of its inception, Baghdad evolved into a significant cultural, commercial, and intellectual center for the Islamic world. This, in addition to housing several key academic institutions (e.g. House of Wisdom), garnered the city a worldwide reputation as the "Center of Learning".
Throughout the High Middle Ages, Baghdad was considered to be the largest city in the world with an estimated population of 1,200,000 people. The city was largely destroyed at the hands of the Mongol Empire in 1258, resulting in a decline that would linger through many centuries due to frequent plagues and multiple successive empires. With the recognition of Iraq as an independent state (formerly the British Mandate of Mesopotamia) in 1938, Baghdad gradually regained some of its former prominence as a significant center of Arab culture.

As a Location Engineer working for BBC News in London part of my job was to cover 6 to 8 weeks stints in the BBC Bureau in Baghdad during the American led invasion of Iraq. This was to manage the Uplink and drive/operate the mobile satellite vehicle around the city providing live news feeds to all BBC News outlets. (A land cruiser brought in from Kuwait with a built in flyaway kit which was brought out from London) Over the years I filmed some of my time there initially to show my family what it was like and also to practice my editing so i thought i would show the short footage to those that may be interested. I used my own Sony TRV 19 handicam to film during this stint.

ISIS attacks an ICE CREAM parlour packed with women and children celebrating Ramadan: At least 27 dead and 100 injured in Baghdad car bombings.
Two car bombs ripped through Baghdad on Tuesday killing at least 27 people
16 died in an ISIS attack on an ice cream shop that was packed with children
11 more died after a second device detonated near a government building
A total of 100 people are thought to have been wounded in the bombings.
At least 27 people have been killed and more than 100 wounded after two car bombs ripped through Baghdad, including one that targeted an ice cream parlour.
Sixteen people died in the first blast as ISIS militants detonated a car bomb outside an ice cream shop as it was packed with women and children breaking their Ramadan fast shortly after midnight on Tuesday.
A few hours later a second bomb the exploded by a government-run pension officer near the city's Al-Shuhada Bridge, killing a further 11 people.
More than 100 people are thought to have been wounded in the two attacks in total.

As a Location Engineer working for BBC News in London part of my job was to cover 6 to 8 weeks stints in the BBC Bureau in Baghdad during the American led invasion of Iraq. This was to manage the Uplink and drive/operate the mobile satellite vehicle around the city providing live news feeds to all BBC News outlets. (A land cruiser brought in from Kuwait with a built in flyaway kit which was brought out from London)
Over the years I filmed some of my time there initially to show my family what it was like and also to practice my editing so i thought i would show the short footage to those that may be interested.
I used my own Sony TRV 19 handicam to film during this stint.

This isn’t a typical action sports film of guys doing insane tricks in remote locations (though it has that), this isn’t a story about the sacrifices our soldiers make day in and day out (though that is in there as well), and this isn’t a story of a group of friends going on an adventure (though, again, there is that). Iraqi officials say a car bombing at a popular ice cream shop in Baghdad killed at least 10 and wounded dozens. Hospital and police officials say the blast happened late Monday night, just days into the holy month of Ramadan when Muslims fast during daylight hours. The officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity in line with regulations, said the blast in central Baghdad was caused by a parked car. No group immediately claimed responsibility for the blast.

This isn’t a typical action sports film of guys doing insane tricks in remote locations (though it has that), this isn’t a story about the sacrifices our soldiers make day in and day out (though that is in there as well), and this isn’t a story of a group of friends going on an adventure (though, again, there is that). This is a story about what happens when people give for the good of others. When people put their own safety aside to make someone’s life a little better, and how selflessness can change lives.
Bikes over Baghdad ended up traveling to the middle east six seperate times with each tour roughly two weeks in length. We faced extreme conditions, mortar rounds, IED’s, injury, exhaustion and more, but we never missed a show. And while our team read like a who’s who of action sports, egos were put aside and nothing short of a series of miracles were performed.
It seems like a stretch to say riding BMX bikes for the troops could actually change their lives, but this film will show just how special of an experience this was for thousands serving in the Middle East, and hopefully it’ll serve as a reminder that we all have the power to initiate change in our own unique way.

When journalist Paulien Bakker and photographer Marieke van der Velden visited Baghdad again for a report they noticed that Iraq is so much more than what we see of it in the newspapers and on television.
The media focuses exclusively on men with rifles in pickup trucks and bomb blasts. But when you turn the camera just a few degrees away from these images, you can see that life goes on despite the violence and the presence of foreign troops.
The film and photoseries shows a much neglected side of Baghdad.

POWHATAN — Powhatan’s softball team repeated as 4A East region champion, beating Dinwiddie 21-4 in Friday’s final. Mason Basdikis led the way on offense, going 4 for 5 with a triple and six RBIs. Torri Gilbert contributed at the plate as well for the Indians, going 4 for 5 with a triple, a double and three RBIs.
