The SoundWorks Collection talks with the sound team including Cameron Frankley (Sound Supervisor, Sound Designer, Re-recording Mixer) Steve Pederson (Re-recording Mixer), Jay Jennings (Re-recording Mixer and Sound Designer), and Jon Michaels (Sound and Music Editor) to discuss the sound and music of Director Brett Morgen's Rolling Stones Crossfire Hurricane documentary. The Rolling Stones are to be chronicled in a kaleidoscopic new film, Crossfire Hurricane, that documents key periods of their career and their incredible adventures. The film will be broadcast live by satellite to cinemas from the London Film Festival on Thursday 18 October and include live coverage from the red carpet before the film screening begins. Directed by Brett Morgen, the film features historical footage, much of it widely unseen, and commentary from Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Charlie Watts, Ronnie Wood and former Stones Bill Wyman and Mick Taylor, as well as rare interviews with Brian Jones. Period interviews, extensive live performance material and news archive footage will complete the documentary, which takes its title from the opening lines of “Jumping Jack Flash”. I almost left the band in the early 80s, '82-'83. We' d done American tour in '81, big one; they were always the biggest because every time we did it it was bigger than it was ever before. More tickets sold, more audience, more money and more fame. Then we did Europe in '82, right all over Europe. Which was fantastic. I had my big hit ' Je Suis Une Rock Star' , I had two other singles in the top 40 in England. I had a number two and a number five in Australia and the Far East. In Holland and France I was top ten and Germany and places like that. It seemed like it was the right time to stop, because ... Mick and Keith weren't getting on, they were fighting and from '82 we made a few records, but from '82 to '89 we never played. That' s seven years of fighting, arguing and doing their solo things and the band never toured - the Stones. Me and Charlie and Ronnie Wood went down to destitute because Mick and Keith were earning money everyday when our records were being played on the radio, which we weren't in those days. They were getting publishing and song writing royalties all time which we weren't; the only time we were earning was from record sales and live gigs. And there were no live gigs. So me, Charlie and Ronnie Wood went down into desperation. By '89 Ronnie was desperate and he'd got into art to sustain money for his kids. Charlie was getting quite seriously bad and I had an overdraft at the bank of about £200,000. So it was desperate - we had to play that '89-'90 tour. So when we did it we did America '89, Europe, well we did Japan as well for the first time in February 1990. We' d never been there before, they would never let us go. We had huge success there; we played ten times at Tokyo Dome in a row. 45,000 people every night, ten times, no-one has ever done that. The tour was just enormous we did five show stadiums in America. We did the Forum four times, we did Wembley open air five of them. No one has ever done five before, and no one has ever done five since, that I know of. The Stones didn't after I left; they only did threes and twos. We played 120 shows on the three tours and we played to seven and a quarter million people. The average attendance per show was 60,000 per show throughout America, Japan and Europe. At the end of it I thought, there' s nowhere else to go now, we've done it, that's it. You know we're up there; we have had the greatest three tours ever, if there is ever a time to leave this is it. I'd been in the band 30 years and I thought that's it, I'm out. So I told them and they didn't believe me for two years.
