Khemchand Prakash was one of the leading music directors of the 40s. His contemporaries were Ghulam Haider, C. Ramchandra, Anil Biswas and Naushad. He was a pioneer in the field of classical music. He was an expert in Marwar folk songs, thumris and ghazals.
In the 1949 movie, Mahal, his music was considered extraordinary, in terms of its melodies, use of sounds and orchestration. Khemchand Prakash gave Lata Mangeshkar her break in Mahal, despite many objections such as her voice was too thin and reedy. The veteran actor, Ashok Kumar suported Khemchand Prakash's choice and the song “Aayega Aanewala'' went on to become one of the most beautiful and lingering songs.
Mahal is Khemchand Prakash’s best work at the peak of his career. During the production of Mahal, a critic mentioned to the studio authorities that if the film wasn’t a hit, it would only be because of the music. After the release of Mahal, Khemchand received hundreds of letters praising the music from all over India. Khemchand Prakash went over to that critic’s house and made him to read all those letters.
Khemchand Prakash’s work in movies like Mahal, Tansen and Chalte Chalte was an inspiration to several music composers. He directed some of the industry’s biggest singers like Indubala Ishwarlal, Meena Kapoor, Manna Dey, Asha Bhosle, Kantilal, Brijmala, Geeta Dutt, Khurshid, Rajkumari and Shamshad Begum.
Khemchand Prakash not only gave a boost to Lata Mangeshkar's career, he was also the one who introduced Kishore Kumar with Marne ki Duayen Kyon Mangoon in Ziddi in 1948 as well as in Rhim Jhim. Unfortunately, Khemchand Prakash passed away in 1950, still in his early 40s.

Khemchand Prakash
Khemchand Prakash ; 12 December 1907 - 10 August 1950) was a music composer in Hindi film industry. He had few peers in 1940s, the best decade for Indian film music which started with Saigal very active on the scene and ended with Lata Mangeshkar firmly established as the brightest star in the industry. Lata had fruitful association with him (in films Asha, Ziddi, Mahal) when she started making a name for herself. Many years after Khemchand Prakash's death, the ace composer Kamal Dasgupta rated him the best composer. Such opinions are always subjective but Kamal-da's generous tribute was: खेमचन्दजी हम सब को मात दे गये|
Khemchand's brother, Basant Prakash, was also a film composer.
Career
Born in Sujangarh, Rajasthan he got his first training of music and dance from his father who was a dhrupad singer and a Kathak dancer in the royal court. In his teens, he joined Bikaner Royal court as a singer performer and later moved to the royal court of Nepal. But the destiny landed him in Kolkata and he joined the legendary New Theaters. He was assistant to composer Timir Baran in Devdas (1935 film), and he sang a comedy song 'lo kha lo madam khaanaa' (लो खा लो मॅडम खाना) in Street Singer (1938). He then moved to Mumbai and made his debut as music director in 1939 with Supreme Pictures' films Meri Aankhein and Gazi Salauddin, and was soon signed up by Ranjit Movietone Film Studio.

Kishore Kumar
Kishore Kumar (4 August 1929 – 13 October 1987) was an Indian film playback singer, actor, lyricist, composer, producer, director, and screenwriter. He is considered one of the most successful playback singers of the Hindi film industry. Apart from Hindi, he sang in many Indian languages including Bengali, Marathi, Assamese, Gujarati, Kannada, Bhojpuri, Malayalam, Odia, and Urdu. He has also sung in private albums in several languages especially in Bengali which are noted as all time classics. He won 8 Filmfare Awards for Best Male Playback Singer and holds the record for winning the most Filmfare Awards in that category. He was awarded the "Lata Mangeshkar Award" by the Madhya Pradesh government and from that year onwards, the Madhya Pradesh Government initiated a new award called the "Kishore Kumar Award" for contributions to Hindi cinema
Early life
Kishore Kumar was born in a Bengali Ganguly family in Khandwa, Central Provinces (now in Madhya Pradesh) as Abhas Kumar Ganguly. His father Kunjalal Ganguly (Gangopadhyay) was a lawyer and his mother Gouri Devi came from a wealthy Bengali family. Kunjalal Gangopadhyaya was invited by the Kamavisadar Gokhale family of Khandwa to be their personal lawyer. Kishore was the youngest of four siblings, the other three were Ashok (the eldest), Sati Devi, and Anoop. While Kishore was still a child, his brother Ashok became a Bollywood actor. Later, Anoop also ventured into cinema with Ashok's help. Spending time with his brothers, Kishore became interested in films and music. He became a fan of singer-actor K. L. Saigal—whom he considered his guru, and tried to emulate his singing style. He graduated from Christian College, Indore.

pronunciation ) (born 28 September 1929) is an Indian playback singer, and occasional music-composer. She is one of the best-known and most respected playback singers in India. Mangeshkar's career started in 1942 and has spanned over seven decades. She has recorded songs for over a thousand Hindi films and has sung songs in over thirty-six regional Indian languages and foreign languages, though primarily in Marathi and Hindi. She is the elder sister of singers Asha Bhosle, Hridaynath Mangeshkar, Usha Mangeshkar and Meena Mangeshkar. She is the second vocalist, after M. S. Subbulakshmi, to have ever been awarded the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian honour.
India's highest award in cinema the Dadasaheb Phalke Award was bestowed her in 1989 by the Government of India.

Khemchand Prakash was one of the leading music directors of the 40s. His contemporaries were Ghulam Haider, C. Ramchandra, Anil Biswas and Naushad. He was a pioneer in the field of classical music. He was an expert in Marwar folk songs, thumris and ghazals.
In the 1949 movie, Mahal, his music was considered extraordinary, in terms of its melodies, use of sounds and orchestration. Khemchand Prakash gave Lata Mangeshkar her break in Mahal, despite many objections such as her voice was too thin and reedy. The veteran actor, Ashok Kumar suported Khemchand Prakash's choice and the song “Aayega Aanewala'' went on to become one of the most beautiful and lingering songs.
Mahal is Khemchand Prakash’s best work at the peak of his career. During the production of Mahal, a critic mentioned to the studio authorities that if the film wasn’t a hit, it would only be because of the music. After the release of Mahal, Khemchand received hundreds of letters praising the music from all over India. Khemchand Prakash went over to that critic’s house and made him to read all those letters.
Khemchand Prakash’s work in movies like Mahal, Tansen and Chalte Chalte was an inspiration to several music composers. He directed some of the industry’s biggest singers like Indubala Ishwarlal, Meena Kapoor, Manna Dey, Asha Bhosle, Kantilal, Brijmala, Geeta Dutt, Khurshid, Rajkumari and Shamshad Begum.
Khemchand Prakash not only gave a boost to Lata Mangeshkar's career, he was also the one who introduced Kishore Kumar with Marne ki Duayen Kyon Mangoon in Ziddi in 1948 as well as in Rhim Jhim. Unfortunately, Khemchand Prakash passed away in 1950, still in his early 40s.

Khemchand Prakash was one of the leading music directors of the 40s. His contemporaries were Ghulam Haider, C. Ramchandra, Anil Biswas and Naushad. He was a pioneer in the field of classical music. He was an expert in Marwar folk songs, thumris and ghazals.
In the 1949 movie, Mahal, his music was considered extraordinary, in terms of its melodies, use of sounds and orchestration. Khemchand Prakash gave Lata Mangeshkar her break in Mahal, despite many objections such as her voice was too thin and reedy. The veteran actor, Ashok Kumar suported Khemchand Prakash's choice and the song “Aayega Aanewala'' went on to become one of the most beautiful and lingering songs.
Mahal is Khemchand Prakash’s best work at the peak of his career. During the production of Mahal, a critic mentioned to the studio authorities that if the film wasn’t a hit, it would only be because of the music. After the release of Mahal, Khemchand received hundreds of letters praising the music from all over India. Khemchand Prakash went over to that critic’s house and made him to read all those letters.
Khemchand Prakash’s work in movies like Mahal, Tansen and Chalte Chalte was an inspiration to several music composers. He directed some of the industry’s biggest singers like Indubala Ishwarlal, Meena Kapoor, Manna Dey, Asha Bhosle, Kantilal, Brijmala, Geeta Dutt, Khurshid, Rajkumari and Shamshad Begum.

Mahal (Hindi: महल, English: The Mansion) is a 1949 Indian Hindi film directed by Kamal Amrohi and starring Ashok Kumar and Madhubala. It was India's first reincarnation thriller film.
Mahal is a story of reincarnation and a ghost story. In Allahabad, there is a beautiful abandoned palace. When a new owner, Hari Shankar (Ashok Kumar) comes to live in this palace, the old gardener narrates the story of incomplete love.
Story Line:
40 years ago, a man built it and his lover, Kamini (Madhubala) began to live in it. She would wait all day long for the man to come to her at midnight, but he always left before it was morning. One stormy night, the man's ship sank and he drowned. Before leaving Kamini, he tells her that their love will never fail. A few days later, Kamini also died.
When Shankar goes to bedroom, a photograph falls from the wall and Shankar is astonished to find the man in the photograph looks exactly like him. Then, a woman is heard singing and Shankar follows it. He finds her sitting in a room but she flees when she sees him. Shankar's friend Shrinath (Kanu Roy) arrives and Shankar expresses suspicion on his being the man of the incomplete love story in a previous life. Shrinath tries to calm him but then the woman reappears. They follow her to the terrace, where she jumps off to the water and the two men find nothing when they look down. The next day, Shankar heads back to Kanpur. At Naini, he gets off from train and goes to the palace. Kamini tells him that she is a reality, but Shrinath interferes and warns Shankar that she will draw him to death. The ghost appears again and tells Shrinath to stay away from them. Enraged, Shrinath tries to shoot her but fails. Kamini tells Shankar that if she got a body of a woman whom Shankar likes, she could return to life. She tells Shankar to see the gardener's daughter's face to check if she's beautiful and he can accept Kamini in that face. Meanwhile, Shankar's father arrives after hearing everything from Shrinath and takes him home. Shankar gets married to Ranjana (Vijayalaxmi). He decides to move far away with his wife in order to forget Kamini. After two years, a disturbed Ranjana wanting to know where Shankar goes every night, follows him when he goes to meet Kamini. Kamini tells him to kill the gardener's daughter so that she can use the body. Knowing everything, Ranjana drinks poison and go to police station to give a deathbed confession against Shankar of betrayal and poisoning her. Shanker is submitted to the court and the daughter of the gardener, Asha is also called upon there being accused of the cause of distance between Shankar and Ranjana. Later Asha is revealed to be Kamini. She then accepts that she has played the role of Kamini bacause she had fallen in love with the man in the photograph, who looks like Shankar. But Shankar is sentenced to death. Later, the police come to know about Ranjana's letter and free Shankar. Shankar rushes to Shrinath's place but dies. The credits role as a grieving Kamini and Shrinath walk away.
Cast:
Many established actresses and new faces were screen-tested for the coveted female lead. The part was written with the then-reigning superstar, Suraiya in mind. However, after two screen tests, the fledgling Madhubala, only 16 at the time was selected. The film was key in defining her screen persona and establishing her as one of the most successful and illustrious actresses of the 1950s.

Amrohis debut is now considered a Hindi classic. It is a complicated ghost story psychodrama choreographed by Lachhu Maharaj and featuring hero Shankar (A. Kumar), who moves into an abandoned mansion that has a tragic history. He notices his resemblance to a portrait of the mansions former owner and sees the ghost of the mans mistress Kamini (Madhubala) who tells him he must either die if they are to be united or that he must marry her reincarnation, the gardeners daughter, Asha His friend Shrinath (Kumar) tries to break the obsession by arranging Shankars marriage to Ranjana (Vijayalakshmi). However, Shankars obsession continues to the distress of his new bride who is excepted among other things, to live in a snake-and bat-infested hut. Ranjana commits suicide, accusing Shankar of the deed, but the truth comes out in the courtroom drama when the gardeners daughter admits to having masqueraded as the ghost. Shankar is neverthless condemned to death for Ranjanas murder but in a strange reversal of fortunes, transfers his obsession to Asha: instead of being fascinated by a dead woman, he is now the near-ghost fascinated by the living Asha. The deep focus photography is perhaps German Cameraman Wirschings best work in his career at Bombay Talkies. It is complemented by a remarkably advanced soundtrack. The film includes the song hit, Ayega aanewala (sung by Lata Mangeshkar and regarded as a turning-point in her career use as a leitomotif for the ghost.

He was an expert in Marwar folk songs, thumris and ghazals. In the 1949 movie, Mahal, his music was considered extraordinary, in terms of its melodies, use of sounds and orchestration. In the 1949 movie, Mahal, his music was considered extraordinary, in terms of its melodies, use of sounds and orchestration. Khemchand Prakash gave Lata Mangeshkar her break in Mahal, despite many objections such as her voice was too thin and reedy. The veteran actor, Ashok Kumar suported Khemchand Prakash's choice and the song “Aayega Aanewala'' went on to become one of the most beautiful and lingering songs.
Mahal is Khemchand Prakash’s best work at the peak of his career. During the production of Mahal, a critic mentioned to the studio authorities that if the film wasn’t a hit, it would only be because of the music. After the release of Mahal, Khemchand received hundreds of letters praising the music from all over India. Khemchand Prakash went over to that critic’s house and made him to read all those letters.
Khemchand Prakash’s work in movies like Mahal, Tansen and Chalte Chalte was an inspiration to several music composers. He directed some of the industry’s biggest singers like Indubala Ishwarlal, Meena Kapoor, Manna Dey, Asha Bhosle, Kantilal, Brijmala, Geeta Dutt, Khurshid, Rajkumari and Shamshad Begum.
Khemchand Prakash not only gave a boost to Lata Mangeshkar's career, he was also the one who introduced Kishore Kumar with Marne ki Duayen Kyon Mangoon in Ziddi in 1948 as well as in Rhim Jhim. Unfortunately, Khemchand Prakash passed away in 1950, still in his early 40s.

Rajkumari Dubey was just 10 years old when she recorded her first song for HMV in 1934. But she started her career as a stage artiste. She recounts, “Vijay and Shankar Bhatt of Prakash Pictures spotted me during one of my shows. They liked my voice and persuaded me to discontinue acting on stage, as it would spoil my voice. (In those days, there were no mikes and you had to shout to be heard!) So, I quit theatre and became an employee of Prakash Pictures, as an actress and singer. Interview... Rajkumari Dubey was just 10 years old when she recorded her first song for HMV in 1934. But she started her career as a stage artiste. She recounts, “Vijay and Shankar Bhatt of Prakash Pictures spotted me during one of my shows. They liked my voice and persuaded me to discontinue acting on stage, as it would spoil my voice. (In those days, there were no mikes and you had to shout to be heard!) So, I quit theatre and became an employee of Prakash Pictures, as an actress and singer.

I counted among my peers Shamshad Begum, Zohrabai, Juthika Roy, Zeenat Begum, etc. Our voices were very distinct – both Zohra and Shamshad had resounding voices with a high range, while mine was very soft with a smaller range. I sang quite a few songs with Mukesh, the most popular being ‘Mujhe sach sach batado kya, ke kab dil mein samaye the’. I did not get much opportunity to sing with Mohammad Rafi – mainly because Lata Mangeshkar was just getting popular at the time and, then, all of us took a backseat. In ‘Anhonee’, I sang with Lata Mangeshkar – the song was ‘Zindagi badli’. Nargis had a double role, so I sang for one, while Lata Mangeshkar sang for the other. I sang with Nurjehan in ‘Naukar’. While I never sang with KC Dey, I did sing songs composed by him, along with Manna Dey, his nephew.
I’ve worked with practically all the composers of my time – Khemchand Prakash, Ghulam Haider, Sajjad Hussain, Husnlal Bhagatram, Naushad, Anil Biswas, O.P. Nayyar, S.D. Burman, R.D. Burman and Khurshid Anwar. Among the composers I sang for, I think the late Sajjad Hussain was the most difficult – his compositions were intricate and his way of explaining very complex. Take, for example, ‘Khel Khel Main’ where I sang ‘Koi kis tarha raaze ulfat chhupaye, aji raahein mili aur kadam dagmagaye’. Most other singers also found him very difficult. I also sang for O.P. Nayyar in ‘Aasman’, picturized on Shyama, ‘Piya aan sakhi mere nainan mein mori nindiya churaye’. In the early ’70s, RD Burman called me and said, ‘Here’s a song which is just right for you’ and, indeed, it was a pleasure to sing. The song was a ‘bhajan’ for Gulzar’s ‘Kitaab’, picturised on Dina Pathak: ‘Hari din to beeta sham hui, ab raat baki kataa de’ – As told to Lata Khubchandani few years ago...

Pm - It Is A Very Surprising Thing. Khemchand Prakash, Who Composed Music For Saigal's "Tansen" In Bombay, His Other Identity Is As A Wonderful Choreographer - Excellent He Was! He Had Taught A Bol Of Kathak To Kamlesh Kumari (The Daner In The Film). He Could Play The Tabla As Well. He Was Playing The Bols And Kamlesh Kumari Was Dancing, When I Suggested That A Song Could Be Used In The Situation.
Khemchand Was My Assistant In The Film. Phani Majumdar, The Director Appreciated The Idea. Arzoo Sahab Lucknowvi Was Asked To See If A Song Could Be Written On The Bols Of The Tabla. The Entire Kathal Bol Was Presented As A Song. I Told The Director That I Had To Sing It In Front Of The Camera As Well.
Jc- I Recall You Sang The Song While Playing A Sitar, Onscreen.
Pm - That I Do Not Recall Now... No! I Remember. I Was Playing The Tanpura.
Jc- O! Tanpura...
Sounak also points out that DD Kolkata started around 1975 and the legend passed away in 1978. So the interiew is probably recorded in the intervening period.

Khemchand Prakash was one of the leading music directors of the 40s. His contemporaries were Ghulam Haider, C. Ramchandra, Anil Biswas and Naushad. He was a pioneer in the field of classical music. He was an expert in Marwar folk songs, thumris and ghazals. In the 1949 movie, Mahal, his music was considered extraordinary, in terms of its melodies, use of sounds and orchestration. Khemchand Prakash gave Lata Mangeshkar her break in Mahal, despite many objections such as her voice was too thin and reedy. In the 1949 movie, Mahal, his music was considered extraordinary, in terms of its melodies, use of sounds and orchestration. Khemchand Prakash gave Lata Mangeshkar her break in Mahal, despite many objections such as her voice was too thin and reedy. The veteran actor, Ashok Kumar suported Khemchand Prakash's choice and the song “Aayega Aanewala'' went on to become one of the most beautiful and lingering songs.
Mahal is Khemchand Prakash’s best work at the peak of his career. During the production of Mahal, a critic mentioned to the studio authorities that if the film wasn’t a hit, it would only be because of the music. After the release of Mahal, Khemchand received hundreds of letters praising the music from all over India. Khemchand Prakash went over to that critic’s house and made him to read all those letters.
Khemchand Prakash’s work in movies like Mahal, Tansen and Chalte Chalte was an inspiration to several music composers. He directed some of the industry’s biggest singers like Indubala Ishwarlal, Meena Kapoor, Manna Dey, Asha Bhosle, Kantilal, Brijmala, Geeta Dutt, Khurshid, Rajkumari and Shamshad Begum.
Khemchand Prakash not only gave a boost to Lata Mangeshkar's career, he was also the one who introduced Kishore Kumar with Marne ki Duayen Kyon Mangoon in Ziddi in 1948 as well as in Rhim Jhim. Unfortunately, Khemchand Prakash passed away in 1950, still in his early 40s.

Khemchand Prakash was one of the leading music directors of the 40s. His contemporaries were Ghulam Haider, C. Ramchandra, Anil Biswas and Naushad. He was a pioneer in the field of classical music. He was an expert in Marwar folk songs, thumris and ghazals.
In the 1949 movie, Mahal, his music was considered extraordinary, in terms of its melodies, use of sounds and orchestration. Khemchand Prakash gave Lata Mangeshkar her break in Mahal, despite many objections such as her voice was too thin and reedy. The veteran actor, Ashok Kumar suported Khemchand Prakash's choice and the song “Aayega Aanewala'' went on to become one of the most beautiful and lingering songs.
Mahal is Khemchand Prakash’s best work at the peak of his career. During the production of Mahal, a critic mentioned to the studio authorities that if the film wasn’t a hit, it would only be because of the music. After the release of Mahal, Khemchand received hundreds of letters praising the music from all over India. Khemchand Prakash went over to that critic’s house and made him to read all those letters.
Khemchand Prakash’s work in movies like Mahal, Tansen and Chalte Chalte was an inspiration to several music composers. He directed some of the industry’s biggest singers like Indubala Ishwarlal, Meena Kapoor, Manna Dey, Asha Bhosle, Kantilal, Brijmala, Geeta Dutt, Khurshid, Rajkumari and Shamshad Begum.
Khemchand Prakash not only gave a boost to Lata Mangeshkar's career, he was also the one who introduced Kishore Kumar with Marne ki Duayen Kyon Mangoon in Ziddi in 1948 as well as in Rhim Jhim. Unfortunately, Khemchand Prakash passed away in 1950, still in his early 40s.
