On June 30, exactly one year after Egyptians voted for Muslim Brotherhood leader Mohammed Morsi to become their first-ever democratically elected president, millions of protesters filled central Cairo and town squares across Egypt demanding his dismissal.
The Defense Minister, General Abdel Fatah al-Sisi, promptly issued Morsi with a 48-hour deadline to heed the protesters' demands or face military intervention.
Was this another Egyptian revolution, a military coup or—as some feared—the beginning of a civil war?
With the clock to the army's deadline ticking down and the whole country poised to see what would happen next, VICE went to Cairo to find out.

Egypt (
i/ˈiːdʒɪpt/; Arabic: مِصر Miṣr, Egyptian Arabic: مَصر Maṣr, Coptic: Ⲭⲏⲙⲓ Khemi), officially the Arab Republic of Egypt, is a transcontinental country spanning the northeast corner of Africa and southwest corner of Asia, via a land bridge formed by the Sinai Peninsula. It is the world's only contiguous Eurafrasian nation. Most of Egypt's territory of 1,010,408 square kilometres (390,000 sq mi) lies within the Nile Valley. Egypt is a Mediterranean country. It is bordered by the Gaza Strip and Israel to the northeast, the Gulf of Aqaba to the east, the Red Sea to the east and south, Sudan to the south and Libya to the west.
Egypt has one of the longest histories of any modern country, arising in the tenth millennium BC as one of the world's first nation states. Considered a cradle of civilisation, Ancient Egypt experienced some of the earliest developments of writing, agriculture, urbanisation, organised religion and central government. Iconic monuments such as the Giza Necropolis and its Great Sphinx, as well the ruins of Memphis, Thebes, Karnak, and the Valley of the Kings, reflect this legacy and remain a significant focus of archaeological study and popular interest worldwide. Egypt's rich cultural heritage is an integral part of its national identity, having endured, and at times assimilated, various foreign influences, including Greek, Persian, Roman, Arab, Ottoman, and European. Although Christianised in the first century of the Common Era, it was subsequently Islamised due to the Islamic conquests of the seventh century.

Egypt Post
Egypt Post is the company responsible for postal service in Egypt. Established in 1865, it is one of the oldest governmental institutions in the country.
History
Modern Egyptian postal service began when Carlo Meratti, an Italian, living in Alexandria, established a post office to send and receive mail to and from foreign countries as early as 1821. Meratti took the responsibility of sending and distributing the letters for a price. He transferred his activity to Cairo and Alexandria through his office in Saint Catherine Square (formerly Qansal Square). After Meratti's departure his nephew, Tito Chini (who agreed with the importance of the project) succeeded his uncle with a friend, Giacomo Muzzi. The two partners upgraded the project, naming it the Posta Europea.
The post office began sending, receiving and delivering correspondence from the government and individuals, and the Posta Europea earned the public trust. At the inauguration of the first railway between Alexandria and Kafr el-Zayyat in 1845 the company established branches in Cairo, Atfe, and Rashid (Rosetta), followed by another two branches (in Damanhour and Kafr El Zayyat) in 1855. When the railway was extended from Kafr El Zayyat to Cairo (via Tanta, Benha and Birket el-Sab), the company exploited this opportunity and used the railways to carry the post between Cairo and Alexandria for a five-year contract beginning in January 1856. The contract was as a monopolistic franchise to transport the post to northern Egypt, where it stipulated a fine to be paid to the Posta Europea by anyone caught pilfering mail.

The airline was a pleasant surprise. Many pilgrims flew with us to Cairo and were starting their trip for Haj, a trip of a life time for devout Muslims. They would continue on to Mecca. It was interesting talking to these gentle people about their faith and how it plays such a central point in their lives. Islam and its facets would be a topic of discovery for many on the trip. Just made this little video to show our recent trip to Egypt. (august 2010). We done the 'Ultimate desert experience' which included flying through the scorching desert on quad bikes to be met by lots of camels. Then we went on some camels for a trek through the sands. We then made a trip to a bedoun tent in the middle of nowhere, we saw african dancers, a belly dancer and had a bbq, then it was back onto the quads for a drive through the desert in the dark to where we started off. Our next trip was to Cairo. We had to travel by road due to funds. 7 hours there and 7 hours back... you have to be patient, put it that way, but it was totally worth it. The Cheops Pyramid, the world’s largest single construction, took four hundred thousand workers twenty years to build. It weighs as much as all the cathedrals in Europe put together and spans an area of 53,000 square metres - the height of a fifty storey skyscraper. In the middle of today’s modern city of Luxor, known as the ‘Capital City Of The Pharaohs’, the Luxor Temple stretches along the eastern banks of the Nile and, not far away, the temple complex of Karnak and the Amun Temple. 67 kilometres from Luxor, on the western bank of the Nile, lies the Temple Of Dendera, the most important place of worship for the love goddess, HATHOR, whose heavenly appearance was portrayed by the body of a cow. At Aswan, the landscape of the Nile is enchanting, but it is the stone temples of Abu Simbel that take one back to ancient Egypt, land of the Pharaohs, and archaeological paradise.

The Khan el-Khalili bazaar is like something from a bygone age and where the Orient combines with the Middle Ages, 'A Thousand And One Nights' amid Islamic Cairo. Goods inspired by pharaohs Tutankhamen and Nefertiti are in constant demand and it's where haggling is the norm. The bazaar is a colorful place with smoking hookahs, exotic carpets and musical instruments as well as a huge array of herbs and spices.
Abu Serga is the city's oldest church and dates back to Fatima times. It was built on the ruins of an even older church in the Coptic district of Cairo. The three-aisled basilica was founded by Roman Christians at the end of the 4th century.
Built in 1902, the Egyptian Museum's 150,000 exhibits amount to being one of the greatest historical collections in the world. When both the Greek and Roman civilizations had reached the zenith of their power, Egypt already had a history that dated back almost 3,000 years.
In 1830, King Mohammed Ali had a mosque built and named it after himself but it is now more commonly known as the Alabaster Mosque. It was 18 years in construction and was built on the site of a former Mamluk Palace.

I had an amazing time and met some amazing people. I saw the Great Pyramids of Giza in the Sahara Desert, went to the Cairo Museum, The Mohammed Ali Mosque, the Coptic church and even went to some of the pyramids and Tombs. IT WAS INSANE. How do you guys think the pyramids were built? It was crazy to see how in tune and intelligent our ancient ancestors were. It has always been a mystery, and it was cool to see all of these fascinating ancient buildings up close in real life. The people in Egypt are so friendly, once you say hello! I definitely stood out and got stared at a lot. That happens everywhere but especially here. I felt totally safe everywhere I went with my guide and had an amazing time!

Due to all the negative media coverage in the middle east, countries in the area are heavily affected by the dwindling number of tourists. I took this opportunity to visit Egypt, Jordan and Turkey for 2 months. This video is the first part of the video where I spent 10 days in Egypt traveling alone from Cairo, Aswan to Luxor.
Even though, the number of tourists in Egypt has gone down considerably after the revolution, the country still hold one of the most historic sites and ruins of an Ancient civilization the ruled the area, the Ancient Egypt. After all, this is the only Egypt we have in the world, so don't let the media stop you from coming to this place.

This video captures some high points of an Overseas Adventure Travel trip to Egypt (November 3-15, 2010). Most people in our group flew EgyptAir from New York to Cairo. The airline was a pleasant surprise.
Many pilgrims flew with us to Cairo and were starting their trip for Haj, a trip of a life time for devout Muslims. They would continue on to Mecca. It was interesting talking to these gentle people about their faith and how it plays such a central point in their lives.
Islam and its facets would be a topic of discovery for many on the trip. We found some men with dark marks on their fore heads caused by touching their heads to the ground five times a day during their prayers. These marks are considered signs of piety and devotion.
In Cairo we saw the Pyramids and the Sphinx. We visited a Coptic church, a mosque, and a synagogue. Another high point was Cairo's Museum of Egyptian Antiquities. We found it interesting that many Egyptians drive at night with no lights, believing that it saves their batteries. This custom seems to be even more common outside of Cairo.
From Cairo we flew to Aswan and saw the famous dam. We continued on to Philae Temple and to Abu Simbel, two of Egypt's most famous sites. We sailed the Nile on faluccas, Egyptian sailing vessels that have not changed in many hundreds of years.
A camel ride to St. Simeon's Monastery was followed by a visit to a Nubian family for tea. Later in the trip we would visit a home of a farmer. We boarded the MS Royal Rhapsody in Aswan for a wonderful cruise up the Nile, stopping at the Greco-Roman temple at Kom Ombo and Edfu. One night most of the tour group dressed up in classic Egyptian clothing for a party with dancing and traditional Egyptian food.
The cruise ended in Luxor and most of us hated to leave the boat. The vistas of desert and lush growth were breathtaking. At Luxor, the old Thebes, we visited the beautiful temples of Luxor, and Karnak. Across the Nile awaited the Valley of the Kings with tombs of King Tut, Ramses II, and many other pharaohs. Queen Hapshepsut's timeless temple was nearby.
One night we traveled around Luxor by carriage and visited the markets as people did last minute shopping for the Haj Feast that was to follow the next day.
At 5:00am most of the tour gathered to cross the Nile to the West Bank for a balloon flight over the Valley of the Kings. The weather was clear that day and as the balloons soared at dawn we could hear the Mullahs and their congregations in prayer.
We flew back to Cairo before either going home or continuing on to Jordan. Most of our party continued to Jordan.
The trip itself was an exercise in sensory overload. Security teams armed with sub-machine guns were part of our tours and were on our bus every day. Everywhere we went security was at a high level. Many places had scanners like those found at airports. These places included hotels, tourist sites, and many restaurants. Despite this reality, Egyptians we met were welcoming and warm people.
Street vendors everywhere were assertive and hard to evade or escape once they approached you. You learned never to make eye contact. While haggling for price is expected, some never took no for a final answer. Once you became used to it such behavior seemed normal and somewhat humorous.
Everything was new, but very old at the same time. New sounds, sights, smells, and tastes bombarded us day by day. The culture shock was somewhat tiring, but exhilarating. It caused you to reevaluate what you thought you knew about Egypt, its culture, and its people.
Everyone felt our tour guide, Mona, was an exceptional person and a wonderful tour guide -- probably the best any of us had in our varied travels. We will always remember her and the wonderful time in Egypt.

Everyone felt our tour guide, Mona, was an exceptional person and a wonderful tour guide -- probably the best any of us had in our varied travels. We will always remember her and the wonderful time in Egypt.

Just made this little video to show our recent trip to Egypt. (august 2010). We done the 'Ultimate desert experience' which included flying through the scorching desert on quad bikes to be met by lots of camels. Then we went on some camels for a trek through the sands. We then made a trip to a bedoun tent in the middle of nowhere, we saw african dancers, a belly dancer and had a bbq, then it was back onto the quads for a drive through the desert in the dark to where we started off.
Our next trip was to Cairo. We had to travel by road due to funds. 7 hours there and 7 hours back... you have to be patient, put it that way, but it was totally worth it. When the Pyramids of Giza come into view. wow. we spent about and hour and a half walking around the pyramids taking in the views. There are a lot of beggars and camel riders going around, so you get hassled by them quite a lot. We then drove down to see the mighty Sphinx. Loved it. It was so hot, the heat was unbearable, so we didn't spend as much time there, as we were slowly dying. We then made a trip to TGI FRIDAYS where we had lunch on the nile.
After lunch we drove down to the Egyptian Museum. It's like walking into an airport, you need to get scanned and searched before entering. We had a guide who took us through everything and taught us all about ancient egypt. We saw all of Tutankhamuns artifacts. so amazing. The feeling you get when you see all this stuff is incredible.

The vast, isolated country of Egypt in the North Eastern corner of African is central to studies of the world’s oldest civilisations. Traveller Megan McCormick begins her journey in the sprawling city of Cairo where the most impressive monuments and fascinating sights and relics can be discovered in the old city.
The Bazaar of Khan al-Khalili is a huge market, which has been open for business since the middle ages. Megan learns about herbal medicine from a “doctor’s” clinic and sees craftsmen in the workshops at the bazaar. From here she pays a visit to the mosque at Ibn Tulun; although the site has been Islamic since the mosque was built in the 9th century AD, according to legend this was the spot where Noah’s Arc came to rest and where Moses confronted Pharaoh’s magicians.
No one comes to Cairo without seeing it’s most famous landmark, the Great Pyramids at Giza, just outside the city. They were built as the tombs of three Pharaohs, the first in a string of pyramids running all the way down the Nile to the Sudanese border. Evidence suggests that the first pyramid took hundreds of thousands of workers thirty years to construct.
Egypt was one of the earliest places where Christianity took hold and the monastery at St Antony’s, three hours to the south east of Cairo, was reputedly the very first monastery. St Antony lived as a hermit in a nearby cave for twenty years. Father Lazarus, a former university lecturer who emulates St Antony’s way of life, tells Megan why he chose to live on this mountain saturated with prayer.
En route to Siwa in Egypt’s Western Desert Megan stops at the war cemetery at El Alamein, commemorating the soldiers who fought in World War Two. Tens of thousands of young men on both sides died in the Battle of El Alamein. When she arrives in the remote oasis town of Siwa, close to the Lybian border, Megan is invited to a Siwan stag celebration. The laid-back town is famous for its dates and olives and the town centre is dominated by the crumbling remains of the 13th century fortress of Shali.
From Siwa Megan embarks on a five day desert trek to Luxor. On the way she pays a visit to the oasis town of Bahariyya, where every traveller is greeted personally by the mayor. She joins a family celebrating sebuwa, a ceremony held a week after the birth of a new baby. The following day the group heads for the historic ruins of Bagawat. Here there are 263 Coptic tombs dating back 1800 years, some of which have biblical murals painted on the interior.
Megan is relieved to arrive in Luxor at last. The West Bank of Luxor is known as Monument Valley and it’s here that you’ll find the famous Valley of the Kings. The government has invested heavily in security at major sites since the Shi’ite massacre of fifty people at Luxor in November 1997 which cast a cloud over the Egyptian tourist trade. Nevertheless Megan finds an Egyptologist to guide her around the working archaeological site and to teach her about burial practice. The next morning she has an early a breathtaking view of the entire site – by hot-air balloon.
For the final leg of her trip Megan takes a short flight from Aswan to Abu Simbel, the gateway to southern Egypt. It’s here that Ramses had his sun temple built over three thousand years ago. Four massive statues over sixty five feet tall impress upon the traveller the ruler’s strength and divinity. The temple was moved block by block to a man made mountain sixty five metres higher than its original site so as to prevent submersion by the newly created Lake Nasser.

In May, after an awesome trip in Egypt (https://vimeo.com/129720886) I continued my way up north to the country, Jordan. I decided to leave my trip in Jordan opened and unplanned and boy was it worth it.
The first moment I arrived in Jordan I met Moni, a fellow traveler from Lebanon and we decided to tackle Jordan together from Amman, Jerash to Petra, Wadi Rum, Aqaba and at the end we went camping in Sharhabil Bin Hassneh EcoPark. While camping, we weren't able to find anything to do so we decided to help the locals build fences around the park. This video is a showcase of our trip and hopefully I can transfer the energy we experienced of the country.
For the editing of the video, I decided to experiment on a few editing techniques to make the video transition better. Usually, my videos are always grouped and structured. For this video, I decided to play around a bit more with the footages with zoom, cut and blur animation. It's not perfect but hopefully it creates enough variety that you won't get bored after a few minutes. :)

On June 30, exactly one year after Egyptians voted for Muslim Brotherhood leader Mohammed Morsi to become their first-ever democratically elected president, millions of protesters filled central Cairo and town squares across Egypt demanding his dismissal.
The Defense Minister, General Abdel Fatah al-Sisi, promptly issued Morsi with a 48-hour deadline to heed the protesters' demands or face military intervention.
Was this another Egyptian revolution, a military coup or—as some feared—the beginning of a civil war?
With the clock to the army's deadline ticking down and the whole country poised to see what would happen next, VICE went to Cairo to find out.
