Alan William Napier-Clavering (7 January 1903 – 8 August 1988), better known as Alan Napier, was an English actor. After a decade in West End theatres, he had a long film career first in Britain and then in Hollywood. However, Napier became widely known for portraying Alfred the butler in the 1960s live-action Batman television series.
Napier was the son of Claude Gerald Napier-Clavering (1869–1938) and Mary Millicent Kenrick (1871–1932), sister of Wilfred Byng Kenrick, and a first cousin once removed of Neville Chamberlain,Britain's prime minister from 1937 to 1940. After graduating from Clifton College, he studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art.
He was engaged by the Oxford Players, where he worked with the likes of John Gielgud and Robert Morley. Ironically, as Napier recalled, height played a crucial part in his securing the position and also almost losing it. J. B. Fagan had dismissed Tyrone Guthrie because he was too tall for most parts. Napier was interviewed (and accepted) as Guthrie's replacement while sitting down. Fagan realized that Napier was even taller than Guthrie when he stood up, but honoured his commitment. Napier performed for ten years (1929–1939) on the West End stage.
distinguish|broadcast programming}}
A television program is a segment of content intended for broadcast on vision, other than a commercial, trailer, or any other segment of content not serving as attraction for viewership. It may be a single production, or more commonly, a series of related productions (also called a television series).
A television series that is intended to comprise a limited number of episodes may be called a miniseries or serial. Series without a fixed length are usually divided into seasons or series, yearly or semiannual sets of new episodes. While there is no defined length, US industry practice tends to favor longer seasons than those of some other countries.
A one-time broadcast may be called a "special," or particularly in the UK a "special episode." A television film ("made-for-TV movie" or "television movie"), is a film that is initially broadcast on television rather than released in theaters or direct-to-video.
A program can be either recorded, as on video tape, other various electronic media forms, played with an on-demand player or viewed on live television.

Napier documents his English upbringing as a "poor relation" of the Chanberlain political dynasty (Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain was a cousin) as well as the years on the London stage and the Hollywood screen that preceded his "breakthrough" on Batman. Additional material, including the period between 1973 and his death in 1988, is provided by James Bigwood, who first met the actor in 1975, when profiling him for "Films in Review". This is part 1 of 2. Check our other listings for part 2. This 1949 television appearance features veteran actor Alan Napier (Alfred from Adam West, Batman series) as detective Sherlock Holmes. Quite well done, and surprisingly for the time, was set to film and not a live kinescope. This piece fell into the public domain in 1977 from lack of copyright renewal.
