The film focuses on the lives of two friends living underground, and how a series of strange circumstances slowly overtake their state of minds.' (- Ai Weiwei) Emir Kusturica's feature takes place in Belgrade between WWII and the civil war of the 1990s, when Yugoslavia fell apart, and in allegorical form depicts the human and political tragedy that brought things so far. A carnivalesque and imaginative story about a group of resistance fighters, who end up spending 30 years in a basement in the belief that the war is still raging outside -- a delusion that the black marketeer and their former comrade Marko keeps them trapped in. A great, fun scene from the movie Underground ( http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0114787/ ). Watch this film!
The story follows an underground weapons manufacturer in Belgrade during WWII and evolves into fairly surreal situations. A black marketeer who smuggles the weapons to partisans doesn't mention to the workers that the war is over, and they keep producing. Years later, they break out of their underground "shelter" --- only to convince themselves that the war is still going on.
words and music by Arlo Guthrie
There's a river running underground
That roll along the clay
That took my body when I laid it down
And carried it far away
It's too damned dark for you to see
So I did not protest
My soul shook free, you can't have me
But you may keep the rest
The waters weep, the sickles reap
My hands are cold with sweat
The eagle screams with frightened wings
The dust does not forget
There's a river running underground
That rolls along the clay
That tempts the sould to the ocean cold
