Canberra responds generously to family struggling to find affordable housing

St John's Care has been overwhelmed by the response of Canberrans to the plight of a 17-year-old struggling to save his family from homelessness.

Among the first to respond was Calwell woman Stacey Power who has set up a gofundme page for the teen who is caring for his sick brother and two brothers aged nine and 10.

The Canberra Times reported on Saturday the plight of the struggling family who are being forced out of their rented accommodation and are looking as far afield as Cootamundra in country NSW for a home.

The young man has given up his plumbing apprenticeship to care for his brother and father, who recently had open-heart surgery and cannot work due to ill-health.

St John's Care director Stuart Davis-Meehan said his phone had been ringing off the hook on Monday with offers of help, from accommodation to an apprenticeship for the teenager.

"There has been a wonderful response," he said.

Mr Davis-Meehan said the Canberra charity was sorting through the offers to find a way to best help the family.
