Product Description

Review

Music's equivalent of Schott's Miscellany (Mojo )

A vivid and consistently entertaining cornucopia of lists, miniature histories and Harris's own obsessions (Q )

For anyone needing guidance on living a righteous rock'n'roll life, there's no end of wit and wisdom from the likes of Lemmy, Keith Richards, Bob Dylan and the Gallagher brothers, and compilers of pub quizzes should find plenty of potential here ... a nice alternative seasonal gift (Irish Times )

There's more quitessentially Harris stuff in here (who else would include an illustration of These Animal Men Hooligans?), but ultimately Hail! Hail! . . . drips with lashings of popular, everyday appeal. Neither scholarly tome nor single-flick fluff, it (Classic Rock )

I bought this book to give as a gift for my music loving brother and found myself gripped - so much so that I'm keeping it. It's funny, informative and full of the unexpected. I particularly love the insight into bands' backstage riders and the guide to the world's great rock n roll hotels. The chapter titled music and lyrics is fascinating and again very funny - a guide to Thom Yorke's lyrics, a crap rhyming dictionary and howling factual errors in songs - all just brilliant. Each time I pick it up I just find something else that surprises me and makes me laugh. There is something for any music fan of any genre in this book.

I do not normally write reviews but I thought I would for this book. It's a coffee table type book in one way, because you can dip in and out of it on any page and find something interesting. What I am amazed about is the amount of printing mistakes in the book , given that I am hopeless at english even I could pick up the mistakes... did anybody proof read this book? I was somewhat suprised by some of the factual mistakes as well, given what a respected journalist John Harris is.

I bought the kindle version of this book as I have the hardback. I wanted to take it when I travel. The hardcopy has extensive notes alongside the illustrations which are all omitted from the electronic version. What a rip-off. I am investigating how to get a refund - not very helpful on that score Amazon for electronic downloads - fine if it is hardcopy.
