A future where all of our devices are connected. The 'Internet of Things' will be very real.
The W3C Web of Things (WoT) Interest Group (IG) is designing technological building blocks that help to complement existing IoT platforms and protocols, and thereby enable interoperability at a Web scale. A draft for the overall architecture can be found here. The building blocks are described in the Current Practices document and include: the W3C Thing Description to provide the data and interaction as well as metadata for things, a Scripting API for portable apps to augment physical devices or instantiate virtual things on hubs or the cloud, and multiple protocol bindings.
This talk will give more details about the Web of Things idea and will provide a getting-started guide for implementers who are interested in contributing and/or participating in our so-called PlugFests. The next PlugFest is 12 July 2016 in Beijing, China and will also allow for online participation.

Dom Guinard is CTO and co-founder @EVERYTHNG, a large-scale Web of Things cloud interfacing close to 1 billion devices. Dom got his PhD from ETH Zurich, where he worked on the early concepts of the Web of Things architecture: an open application layer for the Internet of Things. He and co-founder Vlad Trifa are veterans of WoT and IoT technologies and have pioneered this field at SAP and MIT. Dom came to ThingMonk to talk about the process of working with publishers Manning to produce their new book Building the Web of Things http://webofthings.org/book/ honing their PhD research to create a step by step guide to using the included hardware kit to build applications that merge the physical and digital worlds.
Because the Internet of Things is still new, there is no universal application protocol. Fortunately, the IoT can take advantage of the web, where IoT protocols connect applications thanks to universal and open APIs. The book aims to introduce developers, tinkerers, makers and product developers to using cutting-edge and open web technologies to build the IoT. Dom explained that Manning had encouraged them to structure the book so that opportunities to make and do were included from the offset. So each chapter teaches how to take advantage of specific real-time, web-connected devices and services in differing contexts. Web of Things
The Web of Things (WoT) is a term used to describe approaches, software architectural styles and programming patterns that allow real-world objects to be part of the World Wide Web. Similarly to what the Web (Application Layer) is to the Internet (Network Layer), the Web of Things provides an Application Layer that simplifies the creation of Internet of Things applications.
Rather than re-inventing completely new standards, the Web of Things reuses existing and well-known Web standards used in the programmable Web (e.g., REST, HTTP, JSON), semantic Web (e.g., JSON-LD, Microdata, etc.), the real-time Web (e.g., Websockets) and the social Web (e.g., oauth or social networks).
Nature of Things
Research in the Web of Things usually considers things in the broad sense of physical objects. Things can include (but is not limited to) tagged objects (RFID, NFC, QR codes, Barcodes, Image Recognition) to Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN), machines, vehicles and consumer electronics.

The W3C Web of Things (WoT) Interest Group (IG) is designing technological building blocks that help to complement existing IoT platforms and protocols, and thereby enable interoperability at a Web scale. A draft for the overall architecture can be found here. The building blocks are described in the Current Practices document and include: the W3C Thing Description to provide the data and interaction as well as metadata for things, a Scripting API for portable apps to augment physical devices or instantiate virtual things on hubs or the cloud, and multiple protocol bindings.
This talk will give more details about the Web of Things idea and will provide a getting-started guide for implementers who are interested in contributing and/or participating in our so-called PlugFests. The next PlugFest is 12 July 2016 in Beijing, China and will also allow for online participation.

Dom Guinard is CTO and co-founder @EVERYTHNG, a large-scale Web of Things cloud interfacing close to 1 billion devices. Dom got his PhD from ETH Zurich, where he worked on the early concepts of the Web of Things architecture: an open application layer for the Internet of Things. He and co-founder Vlad Trifa are veterans of WoT and IoT technologies and have pioneered this field at SAP and MIT. Dom came to ThingMonk to talk about the process of working with publishers Manning to produce their new book Building the Web of Things http://webofthings.org/book/ honing their PhD research to create a step by step guide to using the included hardware kit to build applications that merge the physical and digital worlds.
Because the Internet of Things is still new, there is no universal application protocol. Fortunately, the IoT can take advantage of the web, where IoT protocols connect applications thanks to universal and open APIs. The book aims to introduce developers, tinkerers, makers and product developers to using cutting-edge and open web technologies to build the IoT. Dom explained that Manning had encouraged them to structure the book so that opportunities to make and do were included from the offset. So each chapter teaches how to take advantage of specific real-time, web-connected devices and services in differing contexts. Because the Internet of Things is still new, there is no universal application protocol. Fortunately, the IoT can take advantage of the web, where IoT protocols connect applications thanks to universal and open APIs. The book aims to introduce developers, tinkerers, makers and product developers to using cutting-edge and open web technologies to build the IoT. Dom explained that Manning had encouraged them to structure the book so that opportunities to make and do were included from the offset. So each chapter teaches how to take advantage of specific real-time, web-connected devices and services in differing contexts.
