Ubbe Eert "Ub" Iwerks, A.S.C. (/ˈʌb ˈaɪwɜːrks/; March 24, 1901 – July 7, 1971) was an American animator, cartoonist, character designer, inventor, and special effects technician, who created Oswald the Lucky Rabbit and Mickey Mouse with Walt Disney. The works Iwerks produced alongside Disney went on to win numerous awards, including multiple Academy Awards.
He was born in Kansas City, Missouri. His father, Eert Ubbe Iwerks, emigrated to the U.S. in 1869 from the village of Uttum in East Frisia (northwest Germany, today part of the municipality of Krummhörn). Ub's full name can be seen on early "Alice" shorts that he signed. Several years later he simplified his name to "Ub Iwerks", sometimes written as "U. B. Iwerks".
He is the father of Disney Legend Don Iwerks and grandfather to documentary film producer Leslie Iwerks.
Iwerks was considered by many to be Walt Disney's oldest friend, and spent most of his career with Disney. The two met in 1919 while working for the Pesmen-Rubin Art Studio in Kansas City, and would eventually start their own commercial art business together. Disney and Iwerks then found work as illustrators for the Kansas City Slide Newspaper Company (which would later be named The Kansas City Film Ad Company). While working for the Kansas City Film Ad Company, Disney decided to take up work in animation, and Iwerks soon joined him.
Mickey Mouse is a funny animal cartoon character and the official mascot of The Walt Disney Company. He was created by Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks at the Walt Disney Studios in 1928. An anthropomorphic mouse who typically wears red shorts, large yellow shoes, and white gloves, Mickey has become the most recognizable cartoon character in the world.
Mickey first was seen in a single test screening (Plane Crazy). Mickey officially debuted in the short film Steamboat Willie (1928), one of the first sound cartoons. He went on to appear in over 130 films, including The Band Concert (1935), Brave Little Tailor (1938), and Fantasia (1940). Mickey appeared primarily in short films, but also occasionally in feature-length films. Ten of Mickey's cartoons were nominated for the Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film, one of which, Lend a Paw, won the award in 1942. In 1978, Mickey became the first cartoon character to have a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Beginning in 1930, Mickey has also been featured extensively as a comic strip character. His self-titled newspaper strip, drawn primarily by Floyd Gottfredson, ran for 45 years. Mickey has also appeared in comic books and in television series such as The Mickey Mouse Club (1955–1996) and others. He also appears in other media such as video games as well as merchandising, and is a meetable character at the Disney parks.

The Skeleton Dance was the first Silly Symphony ever and was completely animated by Ub Iwerks. Amazing isn't it? Ub was at his best when drawing the macabre and supernatural. This short film was taken from the Snow White Diamond Edition Blu-ray and is property of Disney. If you haven't bought it yet, do so soon!
From the Internet Archive: one of the greatest of the Iwerks ComiColor series (generally a mixed bag of cartoons) as well as one of the best-looking two-color cartoons ever made. The Cinecolor two-color system worked much better for animated films than the two-color Technicolor process used by most of the other cartoon studios competing against Walt Disney during 1934 and 1935.
JACK FROST was the 20th in a series of 25 animated ComiColor Cartoons produced by the Ub Iwerks studio from 1933 to 1936. The series was the last produced by the studio; after losing distributor Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer in 1934, the Iwerks studio's senior company Celebrity Pictures (run by Pat Powers) had to distribute the films itself. The series was shot exclusively in Cinecolor. HUMPTY DUMPTY was released on December 30, 1936. Subscribe to Captain Bijou! More vintage videos, trailers and commercials are added almost daily! In 1996 Madeleine Albright said on national TV that 500,000 Iraqi children dead from sanctions was "worth it". A few months later she was confirmed by the US Senate as Secretary of State and nobody even questioned her about this statement. Transporting 500,000 first graders would take 6,667 school buses, making a line more than 50 miles long. Albright's father, Josef Korbel, was also the mentor of Condoleezza Rice. The video features animated clips from the 1929 cartoon "The Skeleton Dance" drawn by Ub Iwerks for Walt Disney. Music is from Buffy Sainte Marie.

Our culture constantly celebrates the achievements of the individual. We call them self-made men and women. We hear about entrepreneurs, inventors, politicians and military leaders that have changed the course of human events "all by themselves." All the media hype and ego aside, the truth is no one builds anything meaningful without the help of others. This story from life of Walt Disney Collection illustrates the fact that every opportunity has its root in a relationship.
