The Lucky Country is a 1964 book by Donald Horne. The title has become a nickname for Australia and is generally used favourably, although the origin of the phrase was negative. Among other things, it has been used in reference to Australia's natural resources, weather, history, distance from problems elsewhere in the world, and other sorts of prosperity.
Horne's intent in writing the book was to document Australia's climb to power and wealth, basing it almost entirely on luck rather than the strength of its political or economic system, which Horne believed was "second rate".
The title of Horne's book comes from the opening words of the book's last chapter:
Australia is a lucky country run mainly by second rate people who share its luck. It lives on other people's ideas, and, although its ordinary people are adaptable, most of its leaders (in all fields) so lack curiosity about the events that surround them that they are often taken by surprise.
Horne's statement was an indictment of 1960s Australia. His intent was to comment that, while other industrialized nations created wealth using "clever" means such as technology and other innovations, Australia did not. Rather, Australia's economic prosperity was largely derived from its rich natural resources. Horne observed that Australia "showed less enterprise than almost any other prosperous industrial society."

This satirical short drama centres around Welcome to the Lucky Country, a notorious and popular 'Aussie' reality TV show that plucks 'lucky' asylum seekers (aka ‘boat people’) out of immigration detention to compete for the ultimate prize, an Australian permanent residency. So far, no refugee has made it past the degrading challenges put before them. But when a young woman from Iran is chosen to compete, things take a dramatic turn. Produced by Soul Vision Films and Pixel Frame.
Aussie legend Richard Clapton is among the finest songwriters that this country has ever produced. His longevity and respect in the industry are testament to his talent. 'Down in the Lucky country' was part of Richard's dream run of singles and albums beginning with the iconic 'Girls on the avenue' and 'Goodbye Tiger' the latter from which this 1978 hit was from. 'Deep water' is a previous posting of mine, and this follow up was chronically overlooked sales wise at the time, but is still one of his best loved songs. Reaching only #70, 'Down in the lucky country' says a great deal about Richard Clapton and the sort of artist he was and continued to be. I hope it brings happy memories for those already familiar with this great performer.

In the heart of the ‘lucky country’ some Australian families and individuals are living on the fringes, facing the daily hardships of unemployment, drug addiction and illness; struggling just to get by. New three-part, fly on the wall observational documentary series Struggle Street gives a voice to those doing it tough right on the doorstep of Australia’s most affluent cities. Filmed in the public housing estates of Sydney’s western suburbs, residents invited cameras in for exclusive, uncensored access to their lives over a six month period. The result is an eye-opening glimpse at real life in under-resourced Australian communities - raw, honest and unfiltered. (Part 2 and 3) (Commissioned by SBS) (Documentary)
On Monday 16 November, a lively Australia 3.0 forum took place at Data61/NICTA's HQ in Eveleigh. Australia is fondly known as ‘The Lucky Country’ and, as investors, we have enjoyed a multi-decade of ‘easy wins’ and ‘beta runs’ across many assets. We dodged the GFC bullet and the last really tough economic period was “the recession we had to have” in 1990/91. But is our luck about to run out? Our panel will discuss the challenges ahead and how many of the old investment beliefs may no longer be relevant.

Sovereignty is no where to be seen
Across this burnt land
And whittling wheat fields
Are still getting no yield
When you’re running the country betting on nothing
Loot is the saviour for a basket case like this
I said like this
In the Lucky Country
In the Lucky Country
So bring out your dead
For another days work
Where money is a small
Compensation for a boot in the face
Who will get the job done now sucking on boredom's breast
Spellbound and staring at a history with no future
I said no future
In the Lucky Country
In the Lucky Country
The racket is up shit creek
Doing all the wrong things
Descending in madness
Pissing into the wind
Cop it like the common man
Copping it from birth to grave
In the Lucky Country
In the Lucky Country
