Melita Bell, a Toowoomba-based estate agent with REMAX Success, wrote more than $1 million in fees in her second year in real estate by selling properties averaging $350,000 to $400,000.
She achieved this while recovering from an almost-fatal car accident, near-bankruptcy and raising a four-year-old son.
“I love selling real estate,” Ms Bell told the audience at AREC 2017.
Ms Bell said the key is to know your motivation for waking each day and getting on with it – in her case it’s her young son.
“Find the ‘Why’”, she said.
“What gets you out of bed every morning. If your why does not make you cry, or is not heart felt, you need to rewrite your ‘why?’”
“If you can’t afford to put food on your sons table and a roof over his head, how hard will you prospect?”
Ms Bell left the audience with her top tips on making home and professional lifework.
She said in an industry that relies on relationships, never miss an opportunity.
“I love to gossip, but everyone else will call it network,” she said.
“Who’s have thought you could get listings from getting your hair and nails done?”
Ms Bell said never write off the transferable skills of a mum which can be applied to clients –listen, talk, help grow and discipline.
“We don’t know what story those clients have that they don’t tell us.”
She said above all, be open with the people you’re dealing with.
“Keep it simple, be likeable, be real.
“You can always remember the truth but you can’t remember a lie.”
And finally, when it comes time to be mum, be mum.
“When you’re at home make sure you turn off the phone – set boundaries and be transparent to your clients.”
