(27 Oct 2016) When his friend Arek was killed in the street, Eric Hind had sickening evidence that the country he'd come to call home had changed.
But the Polish IT consultant had started to feel uneasy even before that, as Britain prepared to vote earlier this year on whether to remain in the European Union.
As debate heated up about the U.K.'s place in Europe, Hind's outsider status was made all too clear to him.
"When I first moved to the U.K. I felt like it was a dream come true," he said with quiet sadness. "It's the country where there are no differences, people just get on with each other, there are no questions asked about where you're from.
"But now I just have to watch my back. People are worried to use their own language in the streets. It's not what it is supposed to be like, or what it was like before."
Hind was among hundreds of thousands of Poles who seized the opportunity when the EU expanded into eastern Europe in 2004 to move to Britain, regarded as a welcoming country with a flexible labour market and relatively high wages.
Twelve years on, he'd settled in Harlow, near London, with a family and a good job.
After the June 23 vote, Hind says he received text messages that said things like, "What time is my bus back home, have I got my passport and good luck in Poland."
Free movement among member states is a key principle of the EU, and millions of Europeans have become used to studying, working or retiring abroad. Britain's vote to quit the bloc - after a "leave" campaign that urged people to "take back control" - is in part a renunciation of that borderless ideal.
The support for leaving the EU was swelled by citizens who felt the presence of so many people from other EU countries was making Britain less "British" and making it harder for Britons to find jobs, housing, and medical care.
One campaign poster featured a long line of migrants beside the slogan "breaking point."
Anti-racism groups say the vote also unleashed a wave of xenophobia that has brought insults, abuse and physical attacks.
Much of the recorded abuse has been aimed at eastern Europeans, who have come to Britain in the hundreds of thousands over the past decade - and particularly Poles, the largest group, who number a million in the U.K.
'Polish' has become derogatory," said Suresh Grover of the Monitoring Group, a charity that works with victims of hate crime.
"People who have racist views have become emboldened and they now keep on saying things that were seen to be unacceptable," he adds.
Official figures back up anecdotal evidence of a rise in hate crime since the referendum. According to the Home Office, police recorded 1,546 racially or religiously aggravated offences in England and Wales in the two weeks before referendum day, and 2,241 in the two weeks after it. The total for July was up 41 percent from the same month a year earlier. August's level was lower, but still higher than before for Brexit vote.
Incidents reported around the country include offensive graffiti daubed on a Polish community centre; cards saying "no more Polish vermin" left on cars; a Polish man punched and kicked in Yeovil, southwest England; another Polish man beaten by a gang of teenagers in the northern city of Leeds; and a 21-year-old Polish student stabbed in the neck with a broken bottle in the English Midlands town of Telford.
On Aug. 27, a Saturday night, Hind's friend Arkadiusz Jozwik, known as Arek, was involved in an altercation with youths outside a pizza parlour in Harlow, about 20 miles (32 kilometres) north of London. The 40-year-old was felled by a single punch, hit his head and died in hospital two days later.
"The hospitality of British society was very famous, and we appreciate it," he said.

This union formed the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth, one of the largest and most populous countries of 16th and 17th-century Europe. But the Polish IT consultant had started to feel uneasy even before that, as Britain prepared to vote earlier this year on whether to remain in the European Union.
As debate heated up about the U.K.'s place in Europe, Hind's outsider status was made all too clear to him.
"When I first moved to the U.K. I felt like it was a dream come true," he said with quiet sadness. "It's the country where there are no differences, people just get on with each other, there are no questions asked about where you're from.
"But now I just have to watch my back. People are worried to use their own language in the streets. It's not what it is supposed to be like, or what it was like before."
Hind was among hundreds of thousands of Poles who seized the opportunity when the EU expanded into eastern Europe in 2004 to move to Britain, regarded as a welcoming country with a flexible labour market and relatively high wages.
Twelve years on, he'd settled in Harlow, near London, with a family and a good job.
After the June 23 vote, Hind says he received text messages that said things like, "What time is my bus back home, have I got my passport and good luck in Poland."
Free movement among member states is a key principle of the EU, and millions of Europeans have become used to studying, working or retiring abroad. Britain's vote to quit the bloc - after a "leave" campaign that urged people to "take back control" - is in part a renunciation of that borderless ideal.
The support for leaving the EU was swelled by citizens who felt the presence of so many people from other EU countries was making Britain less "British" and making it harder for Britons to find jobs, housing, and medical care.
One campaign poster featured a long line of migrants beside the slogan "breaking point."
Anti-racism groups say the vote also unleashed a wave of xenophobia that has brought insults, abuse and physical attacks.
Much of the recorded abuse has been aimed at eastern Europeans, who have come to Britain in the hundreds of thousands over the past decade - and particularly Poles, the largest group, who number a million in the U.K.
'Polish' has become derogatory," said Suresh Grover of the Monitoring Group, a charity that works with victims of hate crime.
"People who have racist views have become emboldened and they now keep on saying things that were seen to be unacceptable," he adds.
Official figures back up anecdotal evidence of a rise in hate crime since the referendum. According to the Home Office, police recorded 1,546 racially or religiously aggravated offences in England and Wales in the two weeks before referendum day, and 2,241 in the two weeks after it. The total for July was up 41 percent from the same month a year earlier. August's level was lower, but still higher than before for Brexit vote.
Incidents reported around the country include offensive graffiti daubed on a Polish community centre; cards saying "no more Polish vermin" left on cars; a Polish man punched and kicked in Yeovil, southwest England; another Polish man beaten by a gang of teenagers in the northern city of Leeds; and a 21-year-old Polish student stabbed in the neck with a broken bottle in the English Midlands town of Telford.
On Aug. 27, a Saturday night, Hind's friend Arkadiusz Jozwik, known as Arek, was involved in an altercation with youths outside a pizza parlour in Harlow, about 20 miles (32 kilometres) north of London. The 40-year-old was felled by a single punch, hit his head and died in hospital two days later.
"The hospitality of British society was very famous, and we appreciate it," he said.

It has been such a pleasant surprise and unlike any part of Europe we've traveled in so far. So yeah, this week we're going to be highlighting 25 things to do around the city and we're excited to show you what it is all about.
We came to Warsaw with little to no expectations and the city completely surprised us. Our week in the capital was spent sampling Polish cuisine, learning about the city's past through museums and historical tours, and also dabbling in a bit of the nightlife. Warsaw is quickly rising through the ranks and we think it won't be long before travellers are flocking en masse. So if you're planning a trip to Poland, don't skip over the capital because there is more to Warsaw than meets the eye.

One of the few statues not destroyed by the German army, is the mermaid Syrena, the symbol and protector of Warsaw.
Visit St Johns Cathedral and St Anne’s Church, whose interior miraculously survived the war.
The Warsaw Museum, is the keeping place of the city’s dramatic stories.
Warsaw University served as military barracks while education was mostly outlawed, but an underground “secret university” of more than 3000 students emerged.
The POLIN Museum of the History of Polish Jews was once the infamous Warsaw ghetto, where over 400,000 were incarcerated in just less than one and a half square miles. Nearby, the Warsaw Uprising Monument and the Warsaw Rising Museum pay tribute to one of the bravest chapters of the city’s history.
Visit the Palace of Culture and Science, a gift to the Polish people from Stalin.
Stroll along the Royal Route, a path once used by Polish Kings, today a popular tourist walk, studded with historical sites.
Along Nowy Swiat Street, pass the monument to Polish astronomer, Nicolaus Copernicus. Closer to the river is the Copernicus Science Centre.
See the heart of another of Warsaw’s famous sons, Fryderyk Chopin in the Holy Cross Church. His music floats through Lazienki Park, home to Lazienki Palace.
The last stop on the Royal Route is Wilanow Palace, with luxurious artworks and formal gardens.
Since the fall of the Iron Curtain, Poland’s economy has boomed, reflected in the luxury malls, such as Zlote Tarasy and the VITKAC Department store.

Poland is one of the larger countries in Central Europe. It has a long Baltic Sea coastline and is bordered by Belarus, the Czech Republic, Germany, Lithuania, Russia (the Kaliningrad Oblast exclave), Slovakia, and Ukraine.
Cities
------------
Most of the major cities boast lovely old centres and a range of splendid buildings, some of them World Heritage sites. Many old quarters were heavily damaged or even destroyed in WWII bombings, but were meticulously rebuilt after the war, using the original bricks and ornaments where possible. Although remains of the Soviet Union and even scars of the Second World War are visible in most of them, the Polish cities offer great historic sight seeing while at the same time they have become modern, lively places. The capital, Warsaw, has one of the best old centres and its many sights include the ancient city walls, palaces, churches and squares. You can follow the Royal Route to see some of the best landmarks outside the old centre. The old city of Kraków is considered the country's cultural capital, with another gorgeous historic centre, countless monumental buildings and a few excellent museums. Just 50 km from there is the humbling Auschwitz concentration camp which, due to the horrible events it represents, leaves an impression like no other World Heritage Site does. The ancient Wieliczka Salt Mine, also a World Heritage Site, is another great daytrip from Kraków.
The provincial capital of Poznań is an underestimated city, but definitely worth a visit. With the oldest cathedral in the country and also the second biggest necropolis in the country for kings and rulers, a beautiful Renaissance town hall with two battling billy goats (seen only around noon), and an impressive 20th century imperial palace built for the German kaiser (just to mention a few attractions) makes a great impression on most visitors.
Once a Hanseatic League town, the port city of Gdańsk boasts many impressive buildings from that time. Here too, a walk along the Royal Road gives a great overview of notable sights. Wrocław, the capital of Lower Silesia, is still less well-known but can definitely compete when it comes to amazing architecture; its Centennial Hall being the prime example. The city's picturesque location on the Oder and countless bridges make this huge city a lovely place. The old town of Zamość was planned after Italian theories of the "ideal town" and named "a unique example of a Renaissance town in Central Europe" by UNESCO. The stunning medieval city of Toruń has some great and original Gothic architecture, as it is one of the few Polish cities to have completely escaped devastation in WWII. The city of Lublin additionally boasts an impressive historic old town, castle, and serene surrounding countryside.

Poland is one of the larger countries in Central Europe. It has a long Baltic Sea coastline and is bordered by Belarus, the Czech Republic, Germany, Lithuania, Russia (the Kaliningrad Oblast exclave), Slovakia, and Ukraine.
Cities
------------
Most of the major cities boast lovely old centres and a range of splendid buildings, some of them World Heritage sites. Many old quarters were heavily damaged or even destroyed in WWII bombings, but were meticulously rebuilt after the war, using the original bricks and ornaments where possible. Although remains of the Soviet Union and even scars of the Second World War are visible in most of them, the Polish cities offer great historic sight seeing while at the same time they have become modern, lively places. The capital, Warsaw, has one of the best old centres and its many sights include the ancient city walls, palaces, churches and squares. You can follow the Royal Route to see some of the best landmarks outside the old centre. The old city of Kraków is considered the country's cultural capital, with another gorgeous historic centre, countless monumental buildings and a few excellent museums. Just 50 km from there is the humbling Auschwitz concentration camp which, due to the horrible events it represents, leaves an impression like no other World Heritage Site does. The ancient Wieliczka Salt Mine, also a World Heritage Site, is another great daytrip from Kraków.
The provincial capital of Poznań is an underestimated city, but definitely worth a visit. With the oldest cathedral in the country and also the second biggest necropolis in the country for kings and rulers, a beautiful Renaissance town hall with two battling billy goats (seen only around noon), and an impressive 20th century imperial palace built for the German kaiser (just to mention a few attractions) makes a great impression on most visitors.
Once a Hanseatic League town, the port city of Gdańsk boasts many impressive buildings from that time. Here too, a walk along the Royal Road gives a great overview of notable sights. Wrocław, the capital of Lower Silesia, is still less well-known but can definitely compete when it comes to amazing architecture; its Centennial Hall being the prime example. The city's picturesque location on the Oder and countless bridges make this huge city a lovely place. The old town of Zamość was planned after Italian theories of the "ideal town" and named "a unique example of a Renaissance town in Central Europe" by UNESCO. The stunning medieval city of Toruń has some great and original Gothic architecture, as it is one of the few Polish cities to have completely escaped devastation in WWII. The city of Lublin additionally boasts an impressive historic old town, castle, and serene surrounding countryside.

Warsaw is a large and sprawling city of more than 1.7 million people that is split into somewhat uneven halves by the Wisła (Vistula) River. Most everything of interest to visitors is on the western side of the river around the modern financial district. Its centrepiece is the landmark Palace of Culture and Science (Pałac Kultury i Nauki), a Socialist-Realist confection which can be seen from virtually anywhere in the city.
The epicentre of Warsaw for visitors is the so-called Royal Route (Trakt Królewski), which runs north-south from the New and Old Towns, past the fashionable shops of Nowy Świat, the palaces that survived the war and the royal gardens of Łazienki Park, before reaching Wilanów Palace to the south of the city centre.
Warsaw's striking Old Town may look like it dates back several centuries but the old gal has barely reached middle age. The painstakingly rebuilt area was awarded a listing on UNESCO's World Heritage List in 1980. Unmissable attractions in and around the Old Town include the Royal Castle, St John's Cathedral and the Citadel. Farther afield, make sure you visit the Warsaw Rising Museum for the story of the courageous men and women who rose up against their occupiers in WWII as well as the Palace of Culture and Science for the views.
No surprising for a city that was essentially rebuilt from the ground up after WWII, Warsaw offers an inordinate amount of green space, with leafy parks where rowing boats cruise past outdoor cafés, during the summer, and free classical concerts attract crowds in a scene far removed from the dull Communist-era images of Warsaw. And don't miss the palaces and other historical and cultural buildings in the city's splendid Łazienki and Wilanów Parks.
Warsaw's nightlife is one of the best in Eastern Europe today, with a multitude of bars and clubs scattered across the city as well as a generous dose of more highbrow entertainment such as classical music concerts and opera. Whatever you do, don't leave town without sampling the tipple of choice here in these parts: wódka (vodka). It comes in a myriad of flavours and hues - from myśliwska (`hunter's vodka'), which tastes a bit like gin, and wiśniówka (flavoured with cherries) to pieprzówka (pepper) and the famous żubrówka ('bison vodka'), which is flavoured with grass and favoured by the beasties in Bialowieza National Park). Poles traditionally drank vodka neat -- never in cocktails.
The dining options have improved no end in Warsaw, with international cuisine regularly featured alongside Polish standards. And Polish cuisine has also undergone some major transformations, lightening up old favourites with less fat and employing fresher ingredients.

This video, along with clips from a performance piece, was submitted with my application to Helix.
Warning: it's raw and windy!!
The funds I seek to raise will support the final leg of this (actual) journey with Yiddishkayt, covering costs of one month travelling in Belarus and Poland. In addition to Helix's curriculum, I will let my body guide the experience, gathering source material including text, photographs, sound recordings, and movement scores as we travel through former Yiddish cultural centers. These fragments will be reimagined and recontextualized for performance. Your support goes directly to fund this field research.
I don't require production costs, simply the means to place my body in these spaces with a group of students, scholars, artists and local guides.

The Rise Of The Independent Asian Traveller
John Mc Quillan, CEO of Openjaw Technologies noted the growth of independent travel within Asia and the growing demand for dynamic packaging. Jonathan Zuk from Amadeo Travel Solutions also commented on the rise of the independent Asian traveller, saying "while in the past they (Asian travellers) would travel in group with language guide, they are now exploring further beyond the gateway destinations".
"People are making decisions faster."
According to Tejveer Singh Bedi from Park Hotel Group, travellers are booking with shorter lead times and booking more online across multiple channels.

(27 Oct 2016) When his friend Arek was killed in the street, Eric Hind had sickening evidence that the country he'd come to call home had changed.
But the Polish IT consultant had started to feel uneasy even before that, as Britain prepared to vote earlier this year on whether to remain in the European Union.
As debate heated up about the U.K.'s place in Europe, Hind's outsider status was made all too clear to him.
"When I first moved to the U.K. I felt like it was a dream come true," he said with quiet sadness. "It's the country where there are no differences, people just get on with each other, there are no questions asked about where you're from.
"But now I just have to watch my back. People are worried to use their own language in the streets. It's not what it is supposed to be like, or what it was like before."
Hind was among hundreds of thousands of Poles who seized the opportunity when the EU expanded into eastern Europe in 2004 to move to Britain, regarded as a welcoming country with a flexible labour market and relatively high wages.
Twelve years on, he'd settled in Harlow, near London, with a family and a good job.
After the June 23 vote, Hind says he received text messages that said things like, "What time is my bus back home, have I got my passport and good luck in Poland."
Free movement among member states is a key principle of the EU, and millions of Europeans have become used to studying, working or retiring abroad. Britain's vote to quit the bloc - after a "leave" campaign that urged people to "take back control" - is in part a renunciation of that borderless ideal.
The support for leaving the EU was swelled by citizens who felt the presence of so many people from other EU countries was making Britain less "British" and making it harder for Britons to find jobs, housing, and medical care.
One campaign poster featured a long line of migrants beside the slogan "breaking point."
Anti-racism groups say the vote also unleashed a wave of xenophobia that has brought insults, abuse and physical attacks.
Much of the recorded abuse has been aimed at eastern Europeans, who have come to Britain in the hundreds of thousands over the past decade - and particularly Poles, the largest group, who number a million in the U.K.
'Polish' has become derogatory," said Suresh Grover of the Monitoring Group, a charity that works with victims of hate crime.
"People who have racist views have become emboldened and they now keep on saying things that were seen to be unacceptable," he adds.
Official figures back up anecdotal evidence of a rise in hate crime since the referendum. According to the Home Office, police recorded 1,546 racially or religiously aggravated offences in England and Wales in the two weeks before referendum day, and 2,241 in the two weeks after it. The total for July was up 41 percent from the same month a year earlier. August's level was lower, but still higher than before for Brexit vote.
Incidents reported around the country include offensive graffiti daubed on a Polish community centre; cards saying "no more Polish vermin" left on cars; a Polish man punched and kicked in Yeovil, southwest England; another Polish man beaten by a gang of teenagers in the northern city of Leeds; and a 21-year-old Polish student stabbed in the neck with a broken bottle in the English Midlands town of Telford.
On Aug. 27, a Saturday night, Hind's friend Arkadiusz Jozwik, known as Arek, was involved in an altercation with youths outside a pizza parlour in Harlow, about 20 miles (32 kilometres) north of London. The 40-year-old was felled by a single punch, hit his head and died in hospital two days later.
"The hospitality of British society was very famous, and we appreciate it," he said.

Four letters are all that remains of Loek Kleerekoper, a young radio-technician who spent the last fifteen months of his life in Nazi concentration camps in occupied Holland and Poland. In this talk Hilda van Neck-Yoder traces the fate of her distant cousin whose story has been virtually erased by the Shoah. Her painstaking research in archives in Amsterdam and Vught, the only official SS concentration camp in Northwestern Europe, reveals the brutality and terror that Loek had to confront but was forbidden to describe in his few letters. The result is a story that avoids the oversimplification and clichés that often mar narratives of the Holocaust.
