TVGreen's Time Machine presents "The Thatcher"
from the series "Claim to Fame"
Berend doesn't need many tools for his work.
We've already seen the long knife, which he used to cut away the tufts from the spread. Then there's the extra slat of wood. It also helps to keep the bundles from being blown off the roof when they're being beaten into shape. Berend leans and stands on the slat while he's putting on the spread.
Soon we'll come across a girder of sorts, but that only appears when the thatcher can't reach the reeds from the scaffolding.
One last gauging of thickness with the straight needle and a sideways glance from both corners of the roof, and the reeds are fastened with a thick piece of twine.
To anchor the reeds firmly, you use a round needle, which is passed around the roof slats. The twine comes into play only at the last moment.
Once the twine is completely pulled through, a special pair of thatcher's pliers is brought out from its hiding place in the overalls pliers with extra long and flat jaws.

The Kingdom of Poland was founded in 1025, and in 1569 it cemented a longstanding political association with the Grand Duchy of Lithuania by signing the Union of Lublin. This union formed the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth, one of the largest and most populous countries of 16th and 17th-century Europe. The Commonwealth ceased to exist in the years 1772–1795, when its territory was partitioned among Prussia, the Russian Empire, and Austria. Poland regained its independence (as the Second Polish Republic) at the end of World War I, in 1918.

It has been such a pleasant surprise and unlike any part of Europe we've traveled in so far. So yeah, this week we're going to be highlighting 25 things to do around the city and we're excited to show you what it is all about.
We came to Warsaw with little to no expectations and the city completely surprised us. Our week in the capital was spent sampling Polish cuisine, learning about the city's past through museums and historical tours, and also dabbling in a bit of the nightlife. Warsaw is quickly rising through the ranks and we think it won't be long before travellers are flocking en masse. So if you're planning a trip to Poland, don't skip over the capital because there is more to Warsaw than meets the eye.

The POLIN Museum of the History of Polish Jews was once the infamous Warsaw ghetto, where over 400,000 were incarcerated in just less than one and a half square miles. Nearby, the Warsaw Uprising Monument and the Warsaw Rising Museum pay tribute to one of the bravest chapters of the city’s history.

Stroll along the Royal Route, a path once used by Polish Kings, today a popular tourist walk, studded with historical sites.

The country suffered mightily in World War II when many of its citizens, including its large Jewish population, were hustled off to Nazi concentration camps. Warsaw is a large and sprawling city of more than 1.7 million people that is split into somewhat uneven halves by the Wisła (Vistula) River. Most everything of interest to visitors is on the western side of the river around the modern financial district. Its centrepiece is the landmark Palace of Culture and Science (Pałac Kultury i Nauki), a Socialist-Realist confection which can be seen from virtually anywhere in the city.
The epicentre of Warsaw for visitors is the so-called Royal Route (Trakt Królewski), which runs north-south from the New and Old Towns, past the fashionable shops of Nowy Świat, the palaces that survived the war and the royal gardens of Łazienki Park, before reaching Wilanów Palace to the south of the city centre.
Warsaw's striking Old Town may look like it dates back several centuries but the old gal has barely reached middle age. The painstakingly rebuilt area was awarded a listing on UNESCO's World Heritage List in 1980. Unmissable attractions in and around the Old Town include the Royal Castle, St John's Cathedral and the Citadel. Farther afield, make sure you visit the Warsaw Rising Museum for the story of the courageous men and women who rose up against their occupiers in WWII as well as the Palace of Culture and Science for the views.
No surprising for a city that was essentially rebuilt from the ground up after WWII, Warsaw offers an inordinate amount of green space, with leafy parks where rowing boats cruise past outdoor cafés, during the summer, and free classical concerts attract crowds in a scene far removed from the dull Communist-era images of Warsaw. And don't miss the palaces and other historical and cultural buildings in the city's splendid Łazienki and Wilanów Parks.
Warsaw's nightlife is one of the best in Eastern Europe today, with a multitude of bars and clubs scattered across the city as well as a generous dose of more highbrow entertainment such as classical music concerts and opera. Whatever you do, don't leave town without sampling the tipple of choice here in these parts: wódka (vodka). It comes in a myriad of flavours and hues - from myśliwska (`hunter's vodka'), which tastes a bit like gin, and wiśniówka (flavoured with cherries) to pieprzówka (pepper) and the famous żubrówka ('bison vodka'), which is flavoured with grass and favoured by the beasties in Bialowieza National Park). Poles traditionally drank vodka neat -- never in cocktails.
The dining options have improved no end in Warsaw, with international cuisine regularly featured alongside Polish standards. And Polish cuisine has also undergone some major transformations, lightening up old favourites with less fat and employing fresher ingredients.

The Rise Of The Independent Asian Traveller
John Mc Quillan, CEO of Openjaw Technologies noted the growth of independent travel within Asia and the growing demand for dynamic packaging. Jonathan Zuk from Amadeo Travel Solutions also commented on the rise of the independent Asian traveller, saying "while in the past they (Asian travellers) would travel in group with language guide, they are now exploring further beyond the gateway destinations".
"People are making decisions faster."
According to Tejveer Singh Bedi from Park Hotel Group, travellers are booking with shorter lead times and booking more online across multiple channels.

The Rise Of The Independent Asian Traveller
John Mc Quillan, CEO of Openjaw Technologies noted the growth of independent travel within Asia and the growing demand for dynamic packaging. Jonathan Zuk from Amadeo Travel Solutions also commented on the rise of the independent Asian traveller, saying "while in the past they (Asian travellers) would travel in group with language guide, they are now exploring further beyond the gateway destinations".

According to Tejveer Singh Bedi from Park Hotel Group, travellers are booking with shorter lead times and booking more online across multiple channels.

Berend doesn't need many tools for his work.
We've already seen the long knife, which he used to cut away the tufts from the spread. Then there's the extra slat of wood. It also helps to keep the bundles from being blown off the roof when they're being beaten into shape. Berend leans and stands on the slat while he's putting on the spread.
Soon we'll come across a girder of sorts, but that only appears when the thatcher can't reach the reeds from the scaffolding.
One last gauging of thickness with the straight needle and a sideways glance from both corners of the roof, and the reeds are fastened with a thick piece of twine.
To anchor the reeds firmly, you use a round needle, which is passed around the roof slats. The twine comes into play only at the last moment.
Once the twine is completely pulled through, a special pair of thatcher's pliers is brought out from its hiding place in the overalls pliers with extra long and flat jaws.
The straight needle, also used as gauging stick, is for those parts of the roof which you can't get to with the rounded needle.
So that's the thatcher's tool supply.
In a minute you won't see all those pieces of twine. They get covered with a second layer of reed.
The thatched roof takes shape, bundle by bundle by bundle. it seems like an endless job, but you can calculate it to the minute.
Every workday he covers about ten square metres of roof. About 10 bundles of 55 centimetres each goes on one square metre. At least 800 bunches of reed will cover this roof, which makes 100 a day. However you look at this job, not much can go wrong. It is a simple roof, nothing fancy. only one window needs to be cut out. A neighbour wanders by to talk about village goings-on: the music, the reed, the roof, the fields and the cement that will be needed soon for the very top.
The whole time we've been watching him work, he's been wearing old worn-down clogs. Dangerous, you would think. You'd be wrong. A really worn-down clog, with no heel left, is the safest thing to wear up on a roof. Your shoe doesn't get caught on something and you don't slip on the reeds. Berend's clogs are quite new, but he wore them down behind the mower out there in the field. Water and reed marshes characterise this region, which provides about a fourth of the reed Holland needs. Hungary, Poland and France bring in the rest. It is an area that is partly man-made. Craftsmanship and nature, hand in hand.Bundled reeds look all the same to most people. But if you look carefully, you can read the history of each reed field. Sometimes populated by cat's tail, in other places with morning glory and woundwort.
And sometimes it's left to itself, becomes overgrown. The circle. closes; and the craft dies out.
