Edinburgh (i/ˈɛdɪnbərə/;Scottish Gaelic: Dùn Èideann [ˈt̪uːn ˈɛːtʲɛn̪ˠ]) is the capital city of Scotland, located in Lothian on the southern shore of the Firth of Forth. It is the second most populous city in Scotland and the seventh most populous in the United Kingdom. The most recent official population estimates are 464,990 for the city of Edinburgh itself and 492,680 for the local authority area. Edinburgh lies at the heart of the Edinburgh & South East Scotland City region with a population in 2014 of 1,339,380. Recognised as the capital of Scotland since at least the 15th century, Edinburgh is home to the Scottish Parliament and the seat of the monarchy in Scotland. The city is also the annual venue of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland and home to national institutions such as the National Museum of Scotland, the National Library of Scotland and the Scottish National Gallery. It is the largest financial centre in the UK after London.
The following is a non exhaustive list of private housing estates in Sha Tin District, Hong Kong.
Festival City (名城) is the largest private housing estate in Tai Wai. It is a HK$20 billion residential-commercial development project by Cheung Kong and MTR Corporation. It is located above the Tai Wai (Station) Maintenance Centre, next to Tai Wai Station, which is the interchange station between the East Rail Line and Ma On Shan Line of the MTR metro system. The site was formerly occupied by a football court and public bicycle park. However the government needed to build the Ma On Shan Line Depot in 2000, forcing the demolition of all of the facilities.
Festival City was built in three phases from 2007 to 2012. It consists of 12 buildings, a 620,000 square feet of clubhouse and a landscape podium. Phase I was completed in September 2010, Phase II in October 2011, and Phase III in August 2012. The plan was to build 12 50-stories high residential towers with a total construction area of 313,955 square meters as well as 25,890 square meters for the general public's use. It offers 4,264 flats to families, two schools and one community facility. This residential project raised the population of Tai Wai significantly. The controversy of this project is that the 12 towers would create an urban heat island effect and block off the air flow of the area. Many people criticize that housing estate is a walled-buildings and it makes Tai Wai lack of public open space and community facilities in nowadays.
Edinburgh Castle is an historic fortress which dominates the skyline of the city of Edinburgh, Scotland, from its position on the Castle Rock. Archaeologists have established human occupation of the rock since at least the Iron Age (2nd century AD), although the nature of the early settlement is unclear. There has been a royal castle on the rock since at least the reign of David I in the 12th century, and the site continued to be a royal residence until the Union of the Crowns in 1603. From the 15th century the castle's residential role declined, and by the 17th century it was principally used as military barracks with a large garrison. Its importance as a part of Scotland's national heritage was recognised increasingly from the early 19th century onwards, and various restoration programmes have been carried out over the past century and a half. As one of the most important strongholds in the Kingdom of Scotland, Edinburgh Castle was involved in many historical conflicts from the Wars of Scottish Independence in the 14th century to the Jacobite Rising of 1745. Research undertaken in 2014 identified 26 sieges in its 1100-year-old history, giving it a claim to having been "the most besieged place in Great Britain and one of the most attacked in the world".
Queen Margaret University (formerly Queen Margaret University College and Queen Margaret College) is a modern university located in Musselburgh, East Lothian near Edinburgh in Scotland. It is named after Saint Margaret, wife of King Malcolm III of Scotland.
Queen Margaret University was founded in 1875, as The Edinburgh School of Cookery and Domestic Economy, by Christian Guthrie Wright and Louisa Stevenson, both members of the Edinburgh Ladies' Educational Association. The School was founded as a women-only institution, with twin aims of improving women's access to higher education and improving the diets of working class families. Teaching was initially delivered via lectures at the Royal Museum, supplemented by a programme of public lectures and demonstrations delivered nationwide, but in 1877 the School established a base at Shandwick Place, in Haymarket.
The school moved in 1891 to Atholl Crescent, expanding its courses and offering residential places to students. In 1909, the School was designated a Central Institution and brought under the public control of the Scottish Education Department. The first Principal appointed was Ethel De la Cour. De la Cour retired in 1930, and in the same year the School became the Edinburgh College of Domestic Science.
The old town of a city or town is its historic or original core. The Scottish capital of Edinburgh is one of the world’s most beautiful cities. Its Old Town and Royal Mile are filled with the ghosts of medieval merchants, body snatchers, and poets, while its Georgian-styled New Town shines with the glories of the Scottish Enlightenment. To see Edinburgh in all her glory, climb to Arthur’s Seat, the highest of the city’s seven peaks. Some historians believe this was the site of King Arthur’s legendary castle Camelot. Nearby, on another volcanic crag, rises Edinburgh Castle, the very symbol of Scotland itself. Over the last eleven centuries, this castle has been laid siege to 26 times but still it stands, a testimony to the indomitable spirit of the Scots. Edinburgh has long held a special place in the hearts of the monarchy. Her Majesty’s Yacht Br...

Kinetic Edinburgh III (Festival City in Motion) is the latest edition to the series of short films showcasing Scotland's beautiful capital city. The idea behind the film is to not capture the Edinburgh International festival itself, but to capture the atmosphere of the city during the Festival: the streets, buildings and parks. There are some amazing views of Arthur's Seat (very rare and difficult to capture with photography), Edinburgh's beautiful streets and the majestic firework finale to the International Edinburgh Festival. Altogether it took six solid weeks to film and 10,000 static photographs made it to the final edit. All legal rights retained and owned by Salhab Films. Short video of Edinburgh produced by Walid Salhab, Lecturer in Media Practice, Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh. This time-lapse video is part of Walid Salhab’s ongoing video production research. It is made up of thousands of individual images - mostly stop-motion combined with a little time-lapse photography. Many different Edinburgh locations are used in the film including Queen Margaret University, Dean Village, the Balmoral Hotel and Princes Street. The film also shows extracts from Speed of Light which recently took place on Arthur’s Seat as part of the Edinburgh International Festival. This video is an initial research exercise. It has allowed Walid to trial new techniques which he intends to use in his next short film. We are delighted that he has shared the first results of ...

This summer I took the opportunity to make with my girlfriend and family a four-day trip to Edinburgh, Scotland. For me it was more a trial-trip. on another occasion I will spend more time in Scotland, because in the short time I have not seen to much of the country. Anyway we enjoyed every minute including making Scottish Tattoos (I was spared), lots of whiskey, Guinness and good food (Haggis). we spent three days in the city and walked from one end to the other. for one day we rented a car to see something of the scottish nature and surroundings. The whole short-trip was wonderful. Equipment: (shot on Red Epic) I wanted to travel with a compact Rig and do all Hand-held with Slow Motion settings and Fake Dolly-Jib movements. Edinburgh, a city that is often mispronounced by first time visitors, was the first city we visited on our adventure tour around Scotland. Flying in all the way from Bangkok to visit Edinburgh for the New Year's Celebration of Hogmany was a fitting way for us to end 2013 and celebrate 2014. Having had a taste of Europe earlier on in the year in the form of visiting Finland, Estonia and Bulgaria we were thrilled to have the opportunity to come and visit Scotland's culture capital (Edinburgh) for the first time during the most festive time of the year. Vacation travel video about destination Edinburgh in Scotland. In the centre of the old town, Edinburgh Castle sits atop the basalt cone of a long-extinct volcano. It is the most visited castle in Scotland and still guarded by soldiers but it is now mainly tourists who storm the defiant rock. Northumbrian king, Edwin, commanded the castle to be built in the seventh century A.D., the "castle on the hill", Edinburgh. The Royal Mile leads from the mighty fortress, downwards, a sloping road from which narrow streets branch off. Just off the upper Royal Mile is the church and cemetery of Greyfriars with its many historical and atmospheric tombs. Its cemetery became well known due to two Irishmen who exhumed newly-buried corpses in 1827 in order to sell them to the local anatomical institute. The...

In Hitching The A1 filmmakers Gary Mcquiggin and Onyeka Igwe give themselves the challenge of getting from London to Edinburgh along the ancient Roman road with only their thumbs to guide them. Hitching being something of a dying art, the pair find most of their time is spent in a limbo of service stations and gazing at the vast pylons that chase them. The drivers who are more game, however, offer insight into a country with a forever shifting landscape. The camera is guided more by serendipity than design, but the filmmakers' curiosity and obvious interest in the personal legacies of big society give the film a burning focus. Slides and video combined to recap the dream vacation of Paul and Neva Garber in September, 2001, to Ireland and Scotland, made possible by their son, Michael, and guided with the help of their daughter, Priscilla and myself. We had been in Edinburgh for the annual Top Director Trip with Mary Kay Cosmetics, and flew to Shannon Ireland on September 9 and met our parents on the morning of the 10th. We spent the next four days in Ireland and another three in Edinburgh with a personal guide, Bill Rennie. It was a marvelous experience, made even more poignant by the fact that we were cared for by our distant "cousins" who, like us, felt tremendous emotion over the terrorist attacks on 9/11.

Edna Burgoo wore a shoe size No 10
When the roll was called that fall and class was ready to begin
She was five feet nine and showin' signs of growin' still some more
Every time she'd sit down she bump her knees and knock her pencils on the floor
There was one old gripy teacher in the bunch
Picked on Edna for everything from books to the baloney in her lunch
And Edna's temper every day was growin' mighty thin
So to avoid the clash she changed her class took up gym when basketball begin
Now the forward on our team was Mabel Earl
She refused to let her couch replace her with this big new girl
So Edna won the bench while we moaned and groaned as Mabel failed to score
Now I can't say who done it but at the half someone helped Mabel break her toe
Now the action sure got fast that second half
With Mabel out Edna came on strong to bring the hometeam back
There was no way that ball could miss when Edna raised her feet
And when a mighty throw put it through the hook
The crowd came screaming off their seats
Our strappy little guard was Emma Jean
No sooner the ball would miss the hook then she'd steal it for our team
Edna threw the goal so fast the lights couldn't keep up with the score
And a halftime 80:17 climbed all the way to read 90:84
Two minutes left showed on the scoreboard clock
Edna and Emma Jean were sweatin' like cotton hands on the dock
With seconds left a faster playin' just about splattered our minds
For Edna had two free shots coming and the score was 90:89
When Edna Burgoo put her tootsies on the mark
Everybody in that place got so quiet it hurt my heart
She bounced the ball on her fingertips and then she hit the spot
It was 90:90 but nobody moved and she steadied her knees for that second shot
Made no difference if her shoe was No 10
We were pullin' for her to make the mark and let our hometeam win
Then the hats flew high and the crowd went wild when Edna's shot was done
