Mechanical television or mechanical scan television is a television system that relies on a mechanical scanning device, such as a rotating disk with holes in it or a rotating mirror, to scan the scene and generate the video signal, and a similar mechanical device at the receiver to display the picture.
This contrasts with modern television technology, which uses electronic scanning methods, for example electron beams in cathode ray tube (CRT) televisions, and liquid-crystal displays (LCD), to create and display the picture.
Mechanical-scanning methods were used in the earliest television systems in the 1920s and 1930s. By 1927 many radio stations were broadcasting experimental television programs using mechanical systems. However the technology never produced images of sufficient quality to become popular with the public. Mechanical-scan systems were largely superseded by electronic-scan technology in the late 1930s, which was used in the first commercially successful television broadcasts which began in the late 1940s.
Another short sequence showing my 32-line televisor in action. The singer is the danish actor Buster Larsen singing 'hip hurray for old Denmark' in about 1960. Buster died in 1993. The Televisor is shown on http://www.home1.stofanet.dk/television/ Again this was filmed off screen using a Sony Digital Video Camera with 'slow shutter', the picture frequency of the televisor being 12 1/2 Hz. The picture consists of 32 vertical lines each consisting of 64 points for picture + 6 points of black (32x70). The programme is DVD run through a Pal625/Baird32 signals converter I build in 1999. You can see it in the video. The televisor is scanning from top left to buttom right - this being the opposite of the original Baird Television System developed by John Logie Baird. Here's a demonstration of a mechanical television receiver displaying a color picture. Such systems were in development in the late 1920s but never became products. This system, on display at the Early Television Museum in Ohio, was built as a demonstration unit using a vintage mirror screw scanning device and modern LEDs and electronic circuitry.

This a presentation of a homemade mechanical TV (view in details and when operating) with the following features: - Nipkow disc - Picture start (Vsync) positionning system - 60 lines at 12.5fps (composite synchro) - Black and white - Aspect ratio of 4:3 with a small disc, by using an anamorphic lens The generated pictures were captured and post-processed to avoid the "black bar" effects due to interference of TV scanning with camera capture rate. (This gives a better and more realistic picture overview but also impairs picture sharpness). Music: "Welcome to Heaven Land" by CKeen
This colour tv use 2-colour system to reproduce an image, opposed to 3 colours in RGB. The colours are orange and blue-green. This is my drum monitor with a new lightbox and led driver.
