Niʻihau or Niihau (/ˈniːhaʊ/; Hawaiian: [ˈniʔiˈhɐw]) is the westernmost and seventh largest of the inhabited Hawaiian Islands in the U.S. state of Hawaiʻi, lying 17.5 miles (15.2 nmi; 28.2 km) southwest of Kauaʻi across the Kaulakahi Channel and having an area of 69.5 square miles (180 km2). Several intermittent playa lakes provide wetland habitats for the Hawaiian coot, the black-winged stilt, and the Hawaiian duck. The island is designated as critical habitat for Brighamia insignis, an endemic and endangered species of Hawaiian lobelioid. The United States Census Bureau defines Niʻihau and the neighboring island and State Seabird Sanctuary of Lehua as Census Tract 410 of Kauai County, Hawaii. Its 2000 census population was 160; Its 2010 census population was 170.
Elizabeth Sinclair purchased Niʻihau in 1864 from the Kingdom of Hawaii and private ownership passed on to her descendants, the Robinson family. During World War II, the island was the site of the Niʻihau Incident: A Japanese navy fighter pilot crashed on the island and terrorized its residents for a week after the attack on Pearl Harbor. The people of Niʻihau are known for their gemlike lei pūpū (shell lei) craftsmanship, and speak Hawaiian as a primary language. The island is generally off-limits to all but relatives of the island's owners, U.S. Navy personnel, government officials and invited guests, giving it the nickname "The Forbidden Isle." Beginning in 1987, a limited number of supervised activity tours and hunting safaris have opened to tourists. The island is currently managed by Bruce and Keith Robinson.
Forbidden Island is a 1959 film directed by Charles B. Griffith. It was his debut as director, although he had directed second unit on Attack of the Crab Monsters. A young Don Preston from the Mothers of Invention appeared in this film.
A freelance frogman (Jon Hall) is hired by a psychotic treasure hunter to recover an emerald that went down in a shipwreck.
Griffith had signed with Columbia under a five-film writer-producer-director contract; he ended up only making two of them, the other being Ghost of the China Sea, which he did not direct.
"They were really terrible," he recalled later. "It stopped me for twenty years from ever directing again. They were really rank. You see, I got chicken and started to write very safely within a formula to please the major studios, and of course, you can't do that."

Emmy Award-winning producer and filmmaker Michael Harris and photojournalist Kevin Ely present this rare look at "The Forbidden Island" of Ni'ihau, Hawai'i, privately owned by the same family since 1864. Harris and Ely were the first-ever American network news crew invited to shoot on Ni'ihau, and the first to get a personal tour of this northwestern-most main Hawai'ian Island by owner and noted conservationist Bruce Robinson. Includes extremely rare footage of Hawai'ian monk seals, the most endangered seal in the world. As seen on ABC Good Morning America on September 19, 2010. Most locals know you have to be invited to the island in order to visit the village but I don't think they know that you can take a tour by air and land on a beach on Niihau (for us Nanina) spending several hours enjoying the sun, sand, shells and sea. I found a tour company online, 'Niihau Helicopters Inc' that offers tours to the public where you can actually land on Ni'ihau - it was expensive, but as local girls we understand how meaningful it is - cost didn't matter - the experience was truly priceless. The tour company does not do any advertising instead believing... "If you are meant to come to Ni'ihau, you will find us." I love that. For us, truly an unforgettable experience... here is our Niihau Adventure! www.LifesSwell.com / www.TheCatDish.com / www.niihau.us

It's a story few have heard. A Japanese pilot crashing on Niihau during World War II and the days that followed surrounded by controversy. Brenton Awa sat down with the Robinson family and learned how that event changed the island forever.
Burl Burlingame, Curator of the Pacific Aviation Museum, explains the bizarre events that occurred when a Japanese Zero pilot crashed his plane on the "Forbidden Island" of Niihau following the Dec 7, 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor. Things that are beautiful haunt me,
I am so hungry to learn all things.
Beauty and life tickle like a catch.
That scratched, but still itches, satisfying and taunting.
