Kim Pasche was barely 20 years old when he left his hometown of Moudon, Switzerland to explore barefoot the heart of Canada’s North. At the end of the journey there is Man’s origin, something Kim Pasche has searched and questionned since his childhood. Driven by archeology and the wild life, he has since experimented Early Life’s techniques and facts in the vastness of Yukon, a journey in the heart of time, nature and humanity.
Touching the origin of things… A quest that has driven Kim Pasche since his childhood. Passionate by nature, it is there that he first questionned artifacts and everyday gestures to attempt discovering their secrets.
His vocation will reach its full extent when his path crosses the ones of Early Life specialists. Then, a new horizon opens before Kim: Experimental archeology that he practices in trainings or in collaboration with museums in the French-speaking part of Switzerland. This land becomes quickly too small for the young man’s procedure that he establishes progressively. In order to come as close as possible to life’s conditions of a hunter-gatherer and to better understand them, Kim Pasche has to search a playground matching the height of his quest. He will end up finding the appropriate wild life within Canada’s North, in Yukon, a territory as big as Spain and almost unpopulated. For ten years, Kim has spent several months per year deep in the wild forest in order to question primitive life. It is a journey through space and time between two worlds, from the dawn of humanity to our modern civilization.

In April of 2008 I drove from Lake Tahoe to Haines, Alaska up the Al-Can highway through British Columbia and the Yukon with an enclosed 4-snowmobile trailer and a ton of gear. I told myself the year before after a few years of getting "shut out" with heli time, that I wouldn't come back up without snowmobiles....instead of sitting around drinking myself into oblivion on a "down day."
Well thank God we did that because we definitely had down days again right from the get-go. The sledding up at Haines Pass is out of control good. Even staying closer to town like below Old Faithful is great. Can't say enough about how much fun it is to ride snowmobiles up there with no trees.
So the first legit day after that main snow storm cycle, we still went out snowmobiling one more time wanting to let the snow set up a bit more....while another part of our group went up in the bird. Actually two groups went up in the bird, and the first group did all the normal day-after-storm-cycle snow pit and snow quality tests.
The first group decided that while the dangers remained elevated, that it was good to go. They all made some of the sickest pow turns in their lives I was told. The next group then - a couple hundred meters or so over - set up for their descent.
The guy in the video was the first one to drop from their group and while not a guide, he had a lot of Utah and AK backcountry experience. He had a Black Diamond Avalung on, but as you can tell from the video while he's talking as he's dropping in, it wasn't in his mouth to start. He tried to shove it in the instant of starting to get sucked down, but it didn't stay in fully during his ragdoll descent. It was just off to the corner of his mouth he said, and he definitely got some snow / ice in his mouth still.
So as he drops in you can also see the sluff to the skier's right immediately start building....and that's actually the chute that was the intended route down. For whatever reason - well pure, unadulterated powder will do it to you - he didn't go make some strong "skier cuts" into the upper pack to do one final snow check as instructed by the main guide who was doing the "tail gunner" work.
Instead he just sent it. And it didn't take more than a few turns out on this big shoulder above this cliff band to break loose.
This was a decent sized avalanche. 1,500 feet the dude fell in a little over 20 seconds. The crown was about 1 - 1.5m. The chute that he got sucked through to the skier's right was flanked on either side by cliff bands that were about 30m tall. He luckily didn't break any bones and obviously didn't hit anything on the run out.
He was only buried for 4 and a half minutes which is incredibly short. I cannot stress these next sentences enough; that in and of itself to be unburied in ONLY 4:28 is miraculous if you have any understanding of being caught in an avalanche and what it takes to be found. It could literally be some kind of "world record" just on how good the guide and supporting cast of other skiers was in getting to him. It also shows why you should ALWAYS be going with people trained in avalanche rescue / first aid....as well as why you'd want to be going with a guided heli operation. Sure this was terrifying for him, but he would've probably been dead if not for going with a guide.
He also got very lucky to be honest. In the time that he's buried, you can hear his breathing already accelerate. The ruffling noise back and forth is his chest rising and falling and the noise that his jacket makes. The intermittent whimpering noise you hear is him trying to swallow and get some air since the avalung wasn't fully in his mouth and instead just to the corner of his mouth. Still sends chills up the back of my neck. Oh...the luck? They located him so fast because his right glove came off just before he came completley to rest and there was an excellent visual of course.
And then the digging out is utterly amazing. I don't think that you could've paid a Hollywood crew to stage something better. The fact that he could've been facing any 360 direction and yet he's looking right up into the sun-filled blue sky with that first full scoop away of the shovel is borderline spiritual.
This is simply a very sobering and unbelievable video. However, you should take away from this video all the positive things that you can learn from it. Yes there are risks to the backcountry - but with proper gear, training, and guide(s) with avalanche and EMT training - you can greatly lower your chances of getting caught in an avalanche in the first place.....and coming back alive if you ever were to get caught in a slide.
Respect Mother Nature for sure. Learn from this. But just like a Craig Kelly in the snowboard world or a Shane McConkey in the ski world who died out in the backcountry (Craig via avalanche and Shane via ski B.A.S.E. jumping), they left this earth while doing the things that they were truly passionate about. Yukon
Yukon (/ˈjuːkɒn/; also commonly called the Yukon) is the westernmost and smallest of Canada's three federal territories. Whitehorse is the territorial capital and Yukon's only city.
The territory was split from the Northwest Territories in 1898 and was named the "Yukon Territory". The federal government's Yukon Act, which received royal assent on March 27, 2002, established "Yukon" as the territory's official name, though "Yukon Territory" is also still popular in usage and Canada Post continues to use the territory's internationally approved postal abbreviation of YT. Though officially bilingual (English and French), the Yukon Government also recognizes First Nations languages.
At 5,959 m (19,551 ft), Yukon's Mount Logan, in Kluane National Park and Reserve, is the highest mountain in Canada and the second-highest on the North American continent (after Denali in the U.S. state of Alaska). Most of Yukon has a Subarctic climate, characterized by long cold winters and brief warm summers. The Arctic Ocean coast has a tundra climate.

Chevrolet Tahoe
The Chevrolet Tahoe (and very similar GMC Yukon) are full-size SUVs from General Motors. Chevrolet and GMC sold two different-sized SUVs under their Blazer/Jimmy model names through the early 1990s. This situation changed when GMC rebadged the full-size Jimmy as the Yukon in 1992. Chevrolet waited until 1995 to rebadge the redesigned mid-size S-10 Blazer as the Blazer, renaming the full-size Blazer as the Tahoe. The name Tahoe refers to the rugged and scenic area surrounding Lake Tahoe in the western United States. The name Yukon refers to the Yukon territory of northern Canada. For the 1995 model year, the Tahoe and Yukon gained a new 4-door model slotting in size between the 2-door models and the longer wheelbase and higher passenger capacity Chevrolet Suburban and newly named Yukon XL.
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has praised the Tahoe as one of the best of its class. The Tahoe is sold in North America, The Middle East (Except Israel), Republic of China (Taiwan), The Philippines, Chile, and Russia as a Left-hand vehicle. The Yukon and Yukon Denali is sold in United States, Canada, Mexico, Republic of China (Taiwan), and the Middle East (Except Israel) in LHD.

Charles Stankievech
Charles Stankievech (born 1978) is an Canadian artist, writer, publisher and curator.
Biography
As a result of the wide spectrum of strategies and the conceptual drive behind the production, his work has been located in the Conceptual Art tradition (e.g. the exhibition Conceptual Filiations ).
Stankievech has published in academic journals, critical theory anthologies, artist catalogues, magazines, and fiction.
In 2007, he was one of the founding faculty members to establish the experimental art college Yukon School of Visual Arts--a unique institution bringing together the local indigenous government, the state ministry of education and the local grass roots art community. As part of the curriculum, he created and curated the Over The Wire project series that invites established artists to collaborate with students to produce new work under the restriction of long-distance communication.
In 2011, he co-founded the publishing project K. Verlag | Press based in Dawson City, Canada and Berlin, Germany.

Wild river
A Wild River (United States, Australia, & New Zealand) or Heritage River (Canada) is a river or a river system designated by a government to be protected and kept "relatively untouched by development and are therefore in near natural condition, with all, or almost all, of their natural values intact."
Within some nation states including in the United States of America, Canada, New Zealand, and the Commonwealth of Australia, governments have opted to focus on rivers and river systems as a kind of "unmodified or slightly modified" landscape feature to protect, manage and preserve in near 'natural' condition – variously labeling or formally declaring such areas to be "Wild Rivers" (or "Heritage Rivers").
The term "wild river" may also more generically describe or identify free flowing rivers without dams.

Where rivers or river systems may be labeled 'Wild Rivers' with the intention of protecting them to a Wilderness (IUCN Category 1b) standard, the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) warns:

In April of 2008 I drove from Lake Tahoe to Haines, Alaska up the Al-Can highway through British Columbia and the Yukon with an enclosed 4-snowmobile trailer and a ton of gear. I told myself the year before after a few years of getting "shut out" with heli time, that I wouldn't come back up without snowmobiles....instead of sitting around drinking myself into oblivion on a "down day." Well thank God we did that because we definitely had down days again right from the get-go. The sledding up at Haines Pass is out of control good. Even staying closer to town like below Old Faithful is great. Can't say enough about how much fun it is to ride snowmobiles up there with no trees. So the first legit day after that main snow storm cycle, we still went out snowmobiling one more time wanting to let the snow set up a bit more....while another part of our group went up in the bird. Actually two groups went up in the bird, and the first group did all the normal day-after-storm-cycle snow pit and snow quality tests. The first group decided that while the dangers remained elevated, that it was good to go. They all made some of the sickest pow turns in their lives I was told. The next group then - a couple hundred meters or so over - set up for their descent. The guy in the video was the first one to drop from their group and while not a guide, he had a lot of Utah and AK backcountry experience. He had a Black Diamond Avalung on, but as you can tell from the video while he's talking as he's dropping in, it wasn't in his mouth to start. He tried to shove it in the instant of starting to get sucked down, but it didn't stay in fully during his ragdoll descent. It was just off to the corner of his mouth he said, and he definitely got some snow / ice in his mouth still. So as he drops in you can also see the sluff to the skier's right immediately start building....and that's actually the chute that was the intended route down. For whatever reason - well pure, unadulterated powder will do it to you - he didn't go make some strong "skier cuts" into the upper pack to do one final snow check as instructed by the main guide who was doing the "tail gunner" work. Instead he just sent it. And it didn't take more than a few turns out on this big shoulder above this cliff band to break loose. This was a decent sized avalanche. 1,500 feet the dude fell in a little over 20 seconds. The crown was about 1 - 1.5m. The chute that he got sucked through to the skier's right was flanked on either side by cliff bands that were about 30m tall. He luckily didn't break any bones and obviously didn't hit anything on the run out. He was only buried for 4 and a half minutes which is incredibly short. I cannot stress these next sentences enough; that in and of itself to be unburied in ONLY 4:28 is miraculous if you have any understanding of being caught in an avalanche and what it takes to be found. It could literally be some kind of "world record" just on how good the guide and supporting cast of other skiers was in getting to him. It also shows why you should ALWAYS be going with people trained in avalanche rescue / first aid....as well as why you'd want to be going with a guided heli operation. Sure this was terrifying for him, but he would've probably been dead if not for going with a guide. He also got very lucky to be honest. In the time that he's buried, you can hear his breathing already accelerate. The ruffling noise back and forth is his chest rising and falling and the noise that his jacket makes. The intermittent whimpering noise you hear is him trying to swallow and get some air since the avalung wasn't fully in his mouth and instead just to the corner of his mouth. Still sends chills up the back of my neck. Oh...the luck? They located him so fast because his right glove came off just before he came completley to rest and there was an excellent visual of course. And then the digging out is utterly amazing. I don't think that you could've paid a Hollywood crew to stage something better. The fact that he could've been facing any 360 direction and yet he's looking right up into the sun-filled blue sky with that first full scoop away of the shovel is borderline spiritual. This is simply a very sobering and unbelievable video. However, you should take away from this video all the positive things that you can learn from it. Yes there are risks to the backcountry - but with proper gear, training, and guide(s) with avalanche and EMT training - you can greatly lower your chances of getting caught in an avalanche in the first place.....and coming back alive if you ever were to get caught in a slide. Respect Mother Nature for sure. Learn from this. But just like a Craig Kelly in the snowboard world or a Shane McConkey in the ski world who died out in the backcountry (Craig via avalanche and Shane via ski B.A.S.E. jumping), they left this earth while doing the things that they were truly passionate about. My three favourite things in the world are mountains, aurora and snow. In early 2012 I got all three of them in spades when I spent nine weeks in the frozen north of Canada's Yukon Territory, thanks to the generosity of my hosts Andrea and Florian Lemphers. With four cameras and dozens of lenses, tripods and a truck full of extreme cold weather gear, I journeyed across the Yukon and chased every gap in the clouds I could find. Kim Pasche was barely 20 years old when he left his hometown of Moudon, Switzerland to explore barefoot the heart of Canada’s North. At the end of the journey there is Man’s origin, something Kim Pasche has searched and questionned since his childhood. Driven by archeology and the wild life, he has since experimented Early Life’s techniques and facts in the vastness of Yukon, a journey in the heart of time, nature and humanity.
Touching the origin of things… A quest that has driven Kim Pasche since his childhood. Passionate by nature, it is there that he first questionned artifacts and everyday gestures to attempt discovering their secrets.
His vocation will reach its full extent when his path crosses the ones of Early Life specialists. Then, a new horizon opens before Kim: Experimental archeology that he practices in trainings or in collaboration with museums in the French-speaking part of Switzerland. This land becomes quickly too small for the young man’s procedure that he establishes progressively. In order to come as close as possible to life’s conditions of a hunter-gatherer and to better understand them, Kim Pasche has to search a playground matching the height of his quest. He will end up finding the appropriate wild life within Canada’s North, in Yukon, a territory as big as Spain and almost unpopulated. For ten years, Kim has spent several months per year deep in the wild forest in order to question primitive life. It is a journey through space and time between two worlds, from the dawn of humanity to our modern civilization.

In April of 2008 I drove from Lake Tahoe to Haines, Alaska up the Al-Can highway through British Columbia and the Yukon with an enclosed 4-snowmobile trailer and a ton of gear. I told myself the year before after a few years of getting "shut out" with heli time, that I wouldn't come back up without snowmobiles....instead of sitting around drinking myself into oblivion on a "down day."
Well thank God we did that because we definitely had down days again right from the get-go. The sledding up at Haines Pass is out of control good. Even staying closer to town like below Old Faithful is great. Can't say enough about how much fun it is to ride snowmobiles up there with no trees.
So the first legit day after that main snow storm cycle, we still went out snowmobiling one more time wanting to let the snow set up a bit more....while another part of our group went up in the bird. Actually two groups went up in the bird, and the first group did all the normal day-after-storm-cycle snow pit and snow quality tests.
The first group decided that while the dangers remained elevated, that it was good to go. They all made some of the sickest pow turns in their lives I was told. The next group then - a couple hundred meters or so over - set up for their descent.
The guy in the video was the first one to drop from their group and while not a guide, he had a lot of Utah and AK backcountry experience. He had a Black Diamond Avalung on, but as you can tell from the video while he's talking as he's dropping in, it wasn't in his mouth to start. He tried to shove it in the instant of starting to get sucked down, but it didn't stay in fully during his ragdoll descent. It was just off to the corner of his mouth he said, and he definitely got some snow / ice in his mouth still.
So as he drops in you can also see the sluff to the skier's right immediately start building....and that's actually the chute that was the intended route down. For whatever reason - well pure, unadulterated powder will do it to you - he didn't go make some strong "skier cuts" into the upper pack to do one final snow check as instructed by the main guide who was doing the "tail gunner" work.
Instead he just sent it. And it didn't take more than a few turns out on this big shoulder above this cliff band to break loose.
This was a decent sized avalanche. 1,500 feet the dude fell in a little over 20 seconds. The crown was about 1 - 1.5m. The chute that he got sucked through to the skier's right was flanked on either side by cliff bands that were about 30m tall. He luckily didn't break any bones and obviously didn't hit anything on the run out.
He was only buried for 4 and a half minutes which is incredibly short. I cannot stress these next sentences enough; that in and of itself to be unburied in ONLY 4:28 is miraculous if you have any understanding of being caught in an avalanche and what it takes to be found. It could literally be some kind of "world record" just on how good the guide and supporting cast of other skiers was in getting to him. It also shows why you should ALWAYS be going with people trained in avalanche rescue / first aid....as well as why you'd want to be going with a guided heli operation. Sure this was terrifying for him, but he would've probably been dead if not for going with a guide.
He also got very lucky to be honest. In the time that he's buried, you can hear his breathing already accelerate. The ruffling noise back and forth is his chest rising and falling and the noise that his jacket makes. The intermittent whimpering noise you hear is him trying to swallow and get some air since the avalung wasn't fully in his mouth and instead just to the corner of his mouth. Still sends chills up the back of my neck. Oh...the luck? They located him so fast because his right glove came off just before he came completley to rest and there was an excellent visual of course.
And then the digging out is utterly amazing. I don't think that you could've paid a Hollywood crew to stage something better. The fact that he could've been facing any 360 direction and yet he's looking right up into the sun-filled blue sky with that first full scoop away of the shovel is borderline spiritual.
This is simply a very sobering and unbelievable video. However, you should take away from this video all the positive things that you can learn from it. Yes there are risks to the backcountry - but with proper gear, training, and guide(s) with avalanche and EMT training - you can greatly lower your chances of getting caught in an avalanche in the first place.....and coming back alive if you ever were to get caught in a slide.
Respect Mother Nature for sure. Learn from this. But just like a Craig Kelly in the snowboard world or a Shane McConkey in the ski world who died out in the backcountry (Craig via avalanche and Shane via ski B.A.S.E. jumping), they left this earth while doing the things that they were truly passionate about. In April of 2008 I drove from Lake Tahoe to Haines, Alaska up the Al-Can highway through British Columbia and the Yukon with an enclosed 4-snowmobile trailer and a ton of gear. I told myself the year before after a few years of getting "shut out" with heli time, that I wouldn't come back up without snowmobiles....instead of sitting around drinking myself into oblivion on a "down day."
Well thank God we did that because we definitely had down days again right from the get-go. The sledding up at Haines Pass is out of control good. Even staying closer to town like below Old Faithful is great. Can't say enough about how much fun it is to ride snowmobiles up there with no trees.
So the first legit day after that main snow storm cycle, we still went out snowmobiling one more time wanting to let the snow set up a bit more....while another part of our group went up in the bird. Actually two groups went up in the bird, and the first group did all the normal day-after-storm-cycle snow pit and snow quality tests.
The first group decided that while the dangers remained elevated, that it was good to go. They all made some of the sickest pow turns in their lives I was told. The next group then - a couple hundred meters or so over - set up for their descent.
The guy in the video was the first one to drop from their group and while not a guide, he had a lot of Utah and AK backcountry experience. He had a Black Diamond Avalung on, but as you can tell from the video while he's talking as he's dropping in, it wasn't in his mouth to start. He tried to shove it in the instant of starting to get sucked down, but it didn't stay in fully during his ragdoll descent. It was just off to the corner of his mouth he said, and he definitely got some snow / ice in his mouth still.
So as he drops in you can also see the sluff to the skier's right immediately start building....and that's actually the chute that was the intended route down. For whatever reason - well pure, unadulterated powder will do it to you - he didn't go make some strong "skier cuts" into the upper pack to do one final snow check as instructed by the main guide who was doing the "tail gunner" work.
Instead he just sent it. And it didn't take more than a few turns out on this big shoulder above this cliff band to break loose.

My three favourite things in the world are mountains, aurora and snow. In early 2012 I got all three of them in spades when I spent nine weeks in the frozen north of Canada's Yukon Territory, thanks to the generosity of my hosts Andrea and Florian Lemphers.
With four cameras and dozens of lenses, tripods and a truck full of extreme cold weather gear, I journeyed across the Yukon and chased every gap in the clouds I could find. Three terabytes and a long learning curve later, this video is short compilation of some of the best footage I captured during my aurora adventures.

Cameras: 2 * Canon 5D Mark II, Canon 1100D (aka Rebel T3), Canon 5D.
Lenses: Canon 24mm f1.4L I & II, 14mm f2.8L, 10-22mm f3.5-5.6.
Motion Control: Vixen Polarie, Dynamic Perception Stage Zero Dolly and a custom controller developed jointly with Fred Vanderhaven which provides pan/tilt motion control and most importantly almost fully automated day-to-night twilight exposure control. The automated aspect is particularly important in the Yukon - a long twilight at -30 degrees means you can't be standing by adjusting the camera the whole time, especially when there are three other cameras to operate.
Processing: RAW image sequences have been processed using Lightroom and LR Timelapse, then rendered with After Effects and Premier Pro.

Finally the big day has come and the road trip of a lifetime has become real. Not only did I sleep in for work and I also got off at Noon to start the trip early. the first night was spent in the jeep for a few hours just to get a nap then carry on to watson lake for the night. Walk the “Great Wood” of Northaw, a 520 acre biological Site of Special Scientific Interest, protected area and one of Hertfordshire's most important Oak wood forests. Once part of a huge Norman woodland and originally used to hunt deer and wild boar, this quiet nature reserve and country park supports a wide ecosystem of natural wildlife, meandering bracken trails and ancient birch woodlands. Our 14km walk will take us through a peaceful Hertfordshire town and directly up into the densely packed Home Wood, adjacent to the Great Wood itself. From there the winding trail follows bending streams and open meadows, along rolling paths of Hornbeam and Oak. Summer Caribou Migration in Nunavik - Great Canadian Wildlife Adventures
In late July and early August the caribou cows and calves of the 332,000 strong Leaf River herd migrate southbound from their calving grounds and steadily move in groups well inland from the coast of Ungava Bay. In 2014, we took Dutch photographers and filmmakers Paul & Jose Wolff deep into the Ungava Peninsula of Nunavik Canada to experience and film this rarely seen wildlife phenomena. This resulting film was taken by and copyrighted to Paul Wolff - and used with permission. Traveling by motorized freighter canoe up a remote Arctic river along with an Inuit guide and camping en-route, the small group of adventurers encountered the fringe of the great caribou migration. From there the winding trail follows bending streams and open meadows, along rolling paths of Hornbeam and Oak. Our return-walking route takes us into the woodlands dense interior. Using the parks hilly contours we’ll traverse narrow paths through sometimes-tricky terrain, returning back through Home Wood and to the town where our journey home begins. Expect to learn about the parks natural and WWII history.

Former Royal Marine Commando Ian Finch is an indigenous cultural researcher, expedition guide and trainee mountain leader who’s been passionately travelling to remote environments to learn about 1st nation communities for over 4 years. His journeys and writing have featured in Sidetracked Magazine, Mens Health and the Great Outdoors Magazine. His latest expedition, a 2000 mile canoe descent of the Yukon River, was included in the top 10 adventures of 2016 by the Guardian. He combines his passion for photography, writing and filmmaking with wild landscapes and the great outdoors. When not overseas, Ian lives in Hertfordshire, London.

Joe knows the best spots to pull a pile of trout and grayling out of the surrounding lakes, and while we were floating out on the still lake in the early morning, Joe shared some of the angling skills his grandfather taught him.

In late July and early August the caribou cows and calves of the 332,000 strong Leaf River herd migrate southbound from their calving grounds and steadily move in groups well inland from the coast of Ungava Bay. In 2014, we took Dutch photographers and filmmakers Paul & Jose Wolff deep into the Ungava Peninsula of Nunavik Canada to experience and film this rarely seen wildlife phenomena. This resulting film was taken by and copyrighted to Paul Wolff - and used with permission. Traveling by motorized freighter canoe up a remote Arctic river along with an Inuit guide and camping en-route, the small group of adventurers encountered the fringe of the great caribou migration. Over a period of days they saw thousands of caribou - sometimes in groups of hundreds at a time - swimming the river at water crossings and following age-old worn trails: there always seemed to be a steady flow of animals passing by. They also experienced a rare event: migrating caribou mixing with a musk-ox herd, and even encountered caribou-wolf interaction when they rounded a corner in the river and interrupted a tundra wolf attacking a cow caribou just after she emerged from a water crossing. The caribou didn't make it. The entire expedition was exposed raw nature at its best, uniquely mixing an array of wild animals with cultural exposure to the Inuit people who have lived, fished, hunted and survived on these harsh lands and waters for thousands of years.
