This is a documentary of the Chinamwali girl initiation ceremony in Chikwawa Ngabu Malawi. We document such cultural practices across Malawi and implement human rights aspects to the communities. We then share the videos to another community to bridge the gap and promote unity and cultural tolerance.
Our DARTs arrive in the district of Chikawawa to assess the damaged cause by the floods earlier this month.

You remember Ndazi from our Chinamwali cultural process documentary. After her chinamwali, it was arranged for her to marry as such is the norm in her village. At the time of the documentary, we intended to establish a bursary scheme for secondary school girls in Nyadenk`a village. This was not possible as we learnt in shock, that non of the girls in the village have made it to secondary school, they all marry whilst in primary level.
We have been engaged in a lengthy dialogue with Ndazi`s parents and village leaders to leave her in school so she may realize her dreams of becoming a medical doctor. FICuHR supports her with stationary, books, extra tuition teacher and motivational meetings with female role models, in hopes of making her story a pivotal point for girls in her village and girls in Malawi in similar cultural traps. Even though Ndazi is already 14 plus years old, and only in standar four, both Ndazi and the team at FICuHR are committed to achieving a better future for her one day at a time.

Chikwawa
Chikwawa is a town with a population of approximately 12,000 located in the Southern Region of Malawi on the west bank of the Shire River. It is the administrative capital of the Chikwawa District. Chikwawa lies about 30 miles south of Blantyre, the commercial capital of Malawi.
Chikwawa was the first town in Malawi to be seen by European explorers when David Livingstone's Zambezi Expedition steamed up the Shire River in 1859. The surrounding region was ravaged by Portuguese slave traders in the nineteenth century, and one member of the expedition called the Shire valley "a river of death."
Today Chikwawa is the gateway to the Majete Game Reserve, the Mwabvi Wildlife Reserve and Lengwe National Park. Large numbers of hippopotamus and crocodiles inhabit the river and swamps in the District, which is low-lying and extremely hot in the summer. Temperatures routinely exceed 100 degrees Fahrenheit, and malaria and Tsete flies are rife.
