Michigan i/ˈmɪʃᵻɡən/ is a state located in the Great Lakes and midwestern regions of the United States. The name Michigan is the French form of the Ojibwa word mishigamaa, meaning "large water" or "large lake". Michigan is the tenth most populous of the 50 United States, with the 11th most extensive total area (the largest state by total area east of the Mississippi River). Its capital is Lansing, and the largest city is Detroit.
Michigan is the only state to consist of two peninsulas. The Lower Peninsula, to which the name Michigan was originally applied, is often noted to be shaped like a mitten. The Upper Peninsula (often referred to as "the U.P.") is separated from the Lower Peninsula by the Straits of Mackinac, a five-mile (8 km) channel that joins Lake Huron to Lake Michigan. The two peninsulas are connected by the Mackinac Bridge. The state has the longest freshwater coastline of any political subdivision in the world, being bounded by four of the five Great Lakes, plus Lake Saint Clair. As a result, it is one of the leading U.S. states for recreational boating. Michigan also has 64,980 inland lakes and ponds. A person in the state is never more than six miles (9.7 km) from a natural water source or more than 85 miles (137 km) from a Great Lakes shoreline.
Belleville is a city in Wayne County in the State of Michigan. The population was 3,991 at the 2010 census. It is the sister city of Machynlleth, Wales. Belleville is 15 miles (24 km) southeast of Ann Arbor and 29 miles (47 km) southwest of Detroit.
The community was named in honor of landowner James Bell by adroitly choosing the French word for "beautiful town". The hamlet was platted in 1847 with the main thoroughfares still used today designated Main, Liberty, and High Street. About 1881, the Belleville depot on the Detroit line of the Wabash Railroad began serving travelers from across the region and the country.
Belleville was established as a village in 1905, when its governance separated from Van Buren Township by an act of the State Legislature. Located on the Huron River which was a natural trade route, the village had long been a thriving center for lumber businesses with saw mills located along the shores of the river. The large expanses of woodlands were removed to make way for farmland, industry and increasing population.
Belleville (French, literally "beautiful town") may refer to:
Belleville is the name or part of the name of several communes in France:
Belleville Lake is a 2-square-mile man-made lake located in Wayne County in the U.S. state of Michigan. It was created in 1925 by the Eastern Michigan Edison Company, by damming the Huron River. The 28-foot-high dam was the last in a series of five dams along the river, creating electricity from hydropower until 1962. The hydropower plant was refurbished in 1988 and has a nameplate production of 1.7 MW. It contains 17,780 acre-feet of water in the seven-mile-long lake. The small community of Rawsonville was flooded out by the dam.
The lake is used for boating and fishing, although the dam has restricted the passage of some fish species and eliminated a commercial mussel fishery which provided mother of pearl for buttons in the early 1900s A 2002 EPA report listed the water quality as good but algae blooms from phosphorus run-off are a known issue.
Located in the southwestern part of Wayne County, MI, Belleville has a lot to offer from a nice downtown area, a park in the center, and a lot of fun on Belleville Lake (a part of the Huron River)!

On Purpose isn’t just a book, it’s an adventure story—a journey that you can join in and make completely your own. It’s about how living with purpose can generate powerful benefits for you and the world around you. When Vic Strecher lost his daughter, Julia, to a rare heart disease, his world ended…only it didn’t. Vic’s wife, Jeri, and older daughter, Rachael, were still very much alive, as were his two demanding careers as professor and businessman. What did end was his worldview: one based on long-held assumptions and beliefs about life, death, disease, health, risk, and ultimate purpose—subjects on which he had been writing and speaking for years—but whose reality he now questioned. Vic’s experience of being “broken open” (as bestselling author Elizabeth Lesser puts it) set him on a ...

The menace is as tricky as it is widespread and costly to stop – invasive species ride on the wind, float on the water and find all f...
